View Full Version : braids are itchy!

Is it just me, or do braids itch anyone else's neck?

I love braids but rarely wear them because of that. I dont wear turtlenecks any more, so that's not one way out of the problem.

I guess if every hair is of equal length, it would be held in the braid? My overall length it blunt, but I guess I must have enough straglers to be annoying.

Any tricks to remedying this?

Thanks!

Do you start the braid right at the nape? Maybe higher on the neck wouldn't itch?

I have this happen if I wear a braid in the same placement for more than one day in a row. I find it particularly bad if I'm hot, and perspiring. I would recommend that you change the placement, and see how that feels.

I hope you can remedy this. I know just how annoying it can be.

I've tried different ways. Regardless of where it's positioned, if the tail ends up in contact with my neck it really bugs me.

Like Franny said, too, it's probably worse with perspiration since my hair sticks to me so bad.

I wonder if it would look too weird if I get get a ponytail sticking out further from head (maybe with a big scrunchie) and braid it from there....

I do all this time, especially for sports ... because of dreaded Braid Itch! (Of course, as I posted on another thread, then you get the problem of the braid slapping your back when you run.) But if you're not doing it for sports, it works fine.

I thought I was the only one with Braid Itch...!

I get this too. Someone suggested that you try to braid higher up off the neck. This doesn't work for me. All the nape hairs just loosen from the braid and give me a baggy look that itches as well.

No real suggestions, just agreement.

I guess I'm a rarity here then since my braid usually doesn't itch me. I get the itchies, but that's just because my skin sometimes gets prone to them. Most of the time the only thing I notice about my braid is when I turn my head or do something and feel it move across my back. Not entirely sure how to remedy the itching people here are experiencing (probably also since I lack that experience). Maybe do something with the braids instead of leaving it down where it gets itchy? That may be too simple. :)

Me, absolutely. It's not the braid that's the problem; it's the fact that my layers fall out all over the freaking place and they scratch my neck really badly.

What if you misted and oiled before you braid? Mine doesn't do this but the tassle sometimes pokes me in the back even through the fabric of whatever I have on. Then I just clip my braid up with something.

I oil well before braiding, 'course it also probably helps that my EO's are geared toward dandruff/itch.

Yes! I've always got 1001 shorter ends poking out all over the place. My braids are both messy AND itchy.

my braid itches my neck cos that's where my tassel is hehehe ^.^

But when I had longer hair it did not. Perhaps it is something of preference?

I always use two braids when i work out. They stay in place tons better than one, and they don't chafe between helmet and neck. (I don't itch, but i HATE having the back of my neck compressed.) Occasionally i'll tie the ends of the two together to keep them from falling in front of me, but for most activities they stay behind my shoulders just fine.

My hair is INSANELY thin though. This might not work for thick haired folks.

I was wondering if there was something that could be applied to help stop the hairs from poking. Thanks for the suggestion !

Any sort of oiling before braiding should help.

Nothing helps me for long. I've oiled, gelled, even braided with conditioner - nope. Within a short time, I still get 1001 little pokey-outs that irritate and itch.
