View Full Version : Sock Bun Question

Okay so I just recently "discovered" the sock bun when searching for heat-free curling methods on youtube, and out of the 125886 times I tried it out, only once was I semi-succesful (had to use 10 bobbypins to keep the thing in place). My hair came out a messy birds nest instead of beautiful curls.
My hair is an inch or so below waist, and it has a few layers in there. It's also quite thick. When I try to roll the sock around my ponytail everything just keeps falling out, very frustrating! The thing is, I understand the method, I just can't seem to actually do it.
I would really like some help. :p Any suggestions?

No suggestions, I'm afraid, but I wanted to say you're not the only one with that problem. I just can't roll my hair in evenly, no matter how careful I am, some parts always stick out/fall out/hang out. And getting that sock out of my hair is even harder.
Hopefully someone will enlighten us how to do this properly soon :)

Haha I'm glad to know I'm not the only one! I always see these fantastic neat sock buns but my hair just doesn't seem to want to cooperate with me.

Somehow my bun starts to unroll from the sock when I am sleeoing and it is very uncomfortable. Also I make the bun on the top of my head for the night and it pulls my front hair a lot. Ouch!
Sadly, my hair does not hold the curl. 1 hour after I put my hair down I don't have any curls. I ask myself sometimes..is it worth it to sleep with dangling bun all night?

I make a pony tail first then roll and one more pony tail holder to keep it in place and it is not pretty very messy but after I am done I sleep on it the the curls are great in the morning . I am at APL+

I've found sockbuns very easy to do but then I use one of those doughnuts from Claires rather than an actual sock. The doughnuts are much firmer and give a rock solid hold.

when i first started doing them they were ultra neat, i didnt do them for a while and now they look a mess - i don't know whats gone wrong! Im trying to avoid using anything except sticks to secure my hair for a while as i have a damaged patch at ponytail level, so the improvements will have to wait a while

I really want to do it, too, but I have the same problem. I've never rolled a sock bun successfully. Blah!

I use these, too. Only downside is since it's foam it has a drying effect on the ends, however it is so much neater looking. I'd choose it for overall look, instead of how it makes curls.
Have you tried the headband method? I have not, however it seems easier. I'm also a sock bun dunce.

I can manage to make the sock bun just fine but I get the birds nest look instead of the curls. However I have only made my sockbuns without product and without wetting the bun. I will try doing that the next time though, but I'm not expecting much.

I would assume (I know it's awful to do!) that sock buns that are perfect are super practiced things and you have to do them sloooooowly to get them tight. Now we will speak of my hair, Naughty mess laughs in the face of neat-ness. He refuses to roll in any semblance of order, however (yes there is a way!) my hairagami (or ez bun or magic bun) can achieve a nice bun and bun curls. But naughty mess corrects his shape back to dead stick in a few minutes, but we all know that the mess doesn't curl. ever. end of discussion.

For the layers falling off- try to keep your head upside down. Then the layers will hang down and get twisted in easier. It works for me, I have a fringe around chin length growing down and slight U hemline.

I wear a sock bun pretty much everyday for work. I actually think they look good kinda messy and even a bit loose or uneven. Don't fret over perfection just for everyday wear. :)

I just did a proper sock bun for the first time, thanks to this thread!!! Now, I dunno how the waves will come out... but I actually did a decent-looking bun! :cheese:
I had just coconut oiled my hair before doing this, so I'm guessing it would be more voluminous if my hair were freshly washed.
It's not perfect, but it's good enough for me! And I finally found a use for my lone Halloween sock! :eyebrows:

I LOVE your descriptions of your hair...always so amusing! Now, sorry to highjack but a friend just gave me two hairagamis and I am next to clueless, what do you with yours other then a bun? How do you avoid the poof at the top and sides?

Ooohh-I nevery thought of that! Thanks for the idea:D I didnt have any advice but I was reading to hopefully get some ideas myself. My longest layer is about three inches above bsl with my bangs about one inch past my chin. When I do the sock bun I have only gotten it kinda neat once. All the other times it looks really bad and I have no idea how I get really nice curls or waves. My curls dont look like the sock bun girls on you tube, one day when my hair is longer, but it looks good enough to wear on no wash day!;)
My only problem is I really need to look in the mirror while I do it. I'm going to try really hard though. The girl in the video does it so good. I guess with time and longer hair mine will look that good too!

Hi laides, one suggestion id like to put out there is try doing the sock bun higher on your head.. like on top. I do this and i find mine falls down the head a little anyway after its done. Also possibly try using a thicker sock. my hair is thick BSL with layers as short at APL and with a bit of practise and trying on diff spots on my head I manage to get a decent one maybe once out of every 3 tries. There are some pics in my album of a sock bun ive done. Id like to add that I dont wet the hair first but thats because i dont do the sock bun for the curls cause no matter what i do if there isnt a ton of hairspray in my hair then the curls drop after an hour or so and i stopped using hairspray over a year ago now.

New product I just found (ok not so new but new to me)
conair bun maker....its well hard to describe same shape and size as a sock bun but its made of ermmm well it could easily be mistaken for a pot scrubber, except its brown. It was under three dollars at the grocery store. I have thick slightly layered hair and had the same problem as you, but with this thing since my hair "sticks" to it I can roll it from the bottom like a big roller!!! in fact I went today and bought a second so that I can have the "sock bun curls" which I love best :D

I usually use one of those rubber bun-roller things to fix my 'sock' bun, but even then it comes out, so I got a plain hair comb and stuck it in the top of the bun and pinned it to my head that way. It usually stays in now.

I never knew there was a tutorial! I tried out your tip to tuck the ends under the elastic band and it worked much better (hairs weren't sticking out anymore), but it still looked more like a pile of hair than an actual donut shape. Ah well, practice makes perfect I guess.
I use these, too. Only downside is since it's foam it has a drying effect on the ends, however it is so much neater looking. I'd choose it for overall look, instead of how it makes curls.

I think I'm gonna look for one of those, I've seen them in the drugstore before.
I love the headband method, it gives me beautiful curls! But I want to try out different things. Plus I would just like a bigger bun to wear out.:p
For the layers falling off- try to keep your head upside down. Then the layers will hang down and get twisted in easier. It works for me, I have a fringe around chin length growing down and slight U hemline.
I tried this and it does work better at distributing the hair around the sock. Thanks for the tip!

Thanks for the tips. :) I already try to put the bun on the very top of my head because I like the look! But I feel that I really need to dampen the hair a bit first or it would be an even bigger pain in the ass to get all the hairs neatly tucked away.

They don't sell Conair here in Belgium but it looks like the foam thingies I've seen in the drugstore! I guess I'll have to take a look for one of those if all else fails.

Annibelle I LOVE your sock bun (and your cute blonde streak underneath! yay hair twins!) It looks great!
I used piggy's wonderful tips to learn to do my sockbuns, and even then it took about 15 times and multiple socks to mess around with. My favourite is a knit fingerless glove, because it's easier to roll, a bit squishier, and I can stick bobby pins through it!
I found the secret for me was rolling it straight. IE I don't try and start it by holding my hair beside my ear and then hope it winds up even when I get close to the base. The other thing I do is roll and unroll a bit if i didn't get it tight enough in a certain spot, or a piece fell out. However I think a totally smooth flat donut is beyond me, mine tends to be looser and bumpier, but very pretty still.

The second hairagami I have is a rip off and does not function properly so all I do is buns. Unless I feel really really lazy and to a pony tail. It makes the mess look so huge it scares me.
To hairagami I generally do it behind my back and I can't see what I am doing. I slide it all the way to about 4 inches to the ends, where my layers start and then snap it to make it start to bun donut curl. You want to roll the hair on the inside of the curl. Sorry I can't think of a better way to explain that. But generally speaking if you're careful and you pay attention you can make sure the ends fold over and under your first roll and then no more silly poof. If you miss some just shove it in the middle. :D

I use a chopped off pantyhose leg, the whole thing minus the toe, so it's long.
With head upside down I put it over the whole ponytail length
Then start rolling the ends over one edge of the pantyhose;
As the length is rolled it fans out around the hole.
It starts as a long tube and ends up a donut.

Arghh, I haven't had any success with the sock bun as a curling method either! (Or any other no-heat curling method, really  ) I have BSL+ normal thickness, slippery hair. I think the length and fiber type of the sock does make a difference? I have been using a tube sock that I'm pretty sure is some kind of synthetic blend. I've been thinking of trying smaller 100% cotton socks and also trying to do multiple socks instead of just one. As other have suggested, I put it directly on top of my head while sleeping so I don't lay on it and it stays better. I just get so frustrated because videos I have seen of people who use it as a curling method achieve such beautiful results!

Ok-let me see if Im understanding you. You put your pony in a pantyhose leg until the ends come out the toe. Then you start rolling down on top of the pantyhose leg so the hose rolls up right along with the hair inside? I hope that wasnt too confusing! If so-that is brilliant! That would have to make a completely neat sock bun! Wow.

Ok -- I have to be honest -- this looks scary to me. I am pretty sure that I would ruin my hair by knotting it into oblivion and I worry that rolling it like that might cause some damage. Could it? Not that my hair is even long enough to attempt a regular bun.... just wondering.

Ooh I love this thread! I LOVE the sock bun (it's actually what I'm wearing in my hair in my avatar pic). But I have the same problem with the bird's nest once I take it out. I've actually only tried it as an overnight heatless curling method once because the results were so yucky.
I was wondering if anyone had tried using a different type of material sock/stocking. I have no problem putting the bun in (I use 2-3 Magic Grip hair pins if it feels a little loose or if I'll be wearing it out all day) and no problem taking it out. My problem is that when I take it out in the morning (the one and only time I tried it) my hair looked like a fried, dried mess! I would imagine that the sock I used just sucked all of the moisture out of my hair even though I wet it beforehand (I used one of my husband's old cotton dress socks). I didn't know if the tights/hose would get stuck in my hair (I don't know where I got that idea) so I was worried about trying that. But now that someone else has said they use a stocking, I am going to try too! I have had a hard time finding a good overnight curling method that I can actually sleep on. Hopefully tweaking the standard sock bun method will work!
Also, youtube user Loepsie posted an updated sock bun video a week or two ago. I think she "invented" the rolling sock bun technique? She has some new tips on how to roll the hair over your sock a little easier. I find that pulling the hair tight after every "turn" helps me tremendously.

I find that if I put my hair in a bun (any kind of bun really), sometimes my ends come out looking fried and velcro-y, because they get messed up in the bun so they're not coming out smooth. I don't think a sock would suck moisture out of your hair? Or maybe that depends on the fabric, clearly I'm no sock bun-expert.:p

This is indeed brilliant, I never thought about using a pantyhose! I'm going to try that out this weekend, but I suspect I'd have to cut it a bit shorter (I wear XL-stockings because of my long legs, but my hair isn't quite that long yet lol).

Just keep playing with it. There is a "magic" place and a Magic direction to roll. You just have to find it and then you will love it. Some times I pony tail first and then adjust the bun closer to my head by pushing the hair through the middle. It gives you a sloppy bun instead of a clean one but it's all a mater of playing with it. Took me 4 years to figure out mine, But I only tried it once every few months and then threw it back in it's drawer.
The hairagami saved the naughty mess from shoulder to mid back because it was all I used. If you need any more help I can get some one to take pictures while I hairagami or video or something.
