View Full Version : Cut my bangs/fringe

I've been thinking about it for a long while now, and finally I just got up the nerve and grabbed the scissors. That first cut was so terrifying, but then the rest was cake! It's been a few years since I last had bangs, and I think I took off about 13-14 inches for it.

Before:

After:

(While these aren't the best photos for showing my new bangs, I don't have any others, so they will have to do.)

ETA: There is another photo on page 4 that's a bit better.

I've been quite happy with my decision. I think having bangs again has revitalized the way I feel about my hair. I was getting pretty bored with the nothing-going-on-in-the-front look. And having them a bit long and shaggy makes for pretty easy maintenance. Thanks to Anna Karina, Brigitte Bardot, and all those '60s babes for the inspiration!

Oh I love them! Now I want bangs...thank...(I have considered them..but am still not sure) SO PRETTY ON YOU! And you hair is so thick and gorgeous btw, that color makes me have hair envy (and I LOVE being a brunnete) but that blonde is so nice on you!

P.S. How did you do the ponytail in the last pic? I like it and want to try.

I just pushed it up a bit and clipped it. My hair was behaving particularly well this day; I assure you I cannot always do that. Haha.

Your bangs are wonderful! Aren't they amazing for bringing out your eyes?

I had someone else cut mine, and now I maintain them. I cheat and use this thing (http://www.ulta.com/ulta/browse/productDetail.jsp?productId=xlsImpprod4141529) and it helps a LOT -- and paid for itself and my scissors very quickly.

Holy cow, you're making me wish I went through with bangs now! I chickened out once I got them cut to chin length and settled for side bangs. They look so lovely!

Gorgeous! In fact, I like them so much I think I might change mine to something similar. How exactly did you cut to get that style? I'm a bit scared of making mine too wide or too heavy or something...

palaeoqueen, I first looked at tons of photos online, and spent a few nights trying to envision how I wanted them, and how to cut them. I cut them dry, of course. I started out with much less than I ended up cutting in the end. Bit by bit, I made tiny, little snips until I was happy. Always cutting in an upward, ever-so-slightly-vertical direction. Never straight across.

Oh yes, I found it immensely helpful to gather my inspirational photos in one spot. If you want to see the ones I used, they are here. (http://pinterest.com/slyz86/hair-brained/)

Yes, actually, one other person (a very good friend) told me about this commercial. It is really funny that you now say it. I guess that makes it pretty true! Haha.

Thank you that's really kind of you to share :) One more question, the cutting slightly upwards thing - do you find that still gives a nice blunt cut?

I'm trying to grow my bangs out now, cause they get greasy so fast.....but, I feel like I might get bored without them! We'll see.

They are still straight across, but they blend better and look far less choppy when cut that way.

Mine get just greasy enough in one day that I have to use a bit of dry shampoo to make them wearable again. But it works like a charm!

I just gave it a go, I only took the tiniest bit off - about 1/8" - but it worked brilliantly! Much better than having it done at the salon (I knew I could do a better job ;) ). And you're totally right about the cutting technique, it looks great, still nice and blunt but blends perfectly. Thank you for the advice and inspiration, I've been trying to pluck up the courage to do this for weeks! I have some random questions about fringes but I think I will start a new thread to avoid hijacking yours.

Oh, palaeoqueen, I know you've already cut, but I just remembered that this image helped me to decide where to make the part. Because some people do it in a half-circle, but I found mine turned out better by using the triangular method.

I only did a tiny cut to start so that's still really helpful, especially as I'm having trouble with the part. Thanks!

May 6th, 2012, 04:06 PM
Ok so I had to go and try out this method right away... and it's brilliant! I did a pretty good job of guessing where the part needed to be but I was a bit too conservative (fear probably ) so I have just now tidied it up a bit and taken a tiny bit more of the length. I would post a pic but my husband has gone on fieldwork and taken the camera with him. It *may* need just a teensy bit extra thickness but I don't want to do too much too soon so will check again next time I wash my hair so I can see how it lies.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

You look great with bangs!

I clicked on this thread because I've been thinking about cutting bangs for about a week now... If I still have the urge next Friday, I'm doing it. My reasons are that I think I look younger with them, and buns/updos will look more interesting.

Re: your cutting technique: a hairdresser once taught me to do that scissors-pointed-up thing, so I think I know what you mean. She also told me to stretch them to nose length and snip off there to get the right starting length.

Hands itching now--good thing I am away from my scissors at the moment :)
