I'm curious, which do you guys prefer? Putting a mask (any kind!) on wet or dry hair?

i've never heard of putting it on dry hair, but that's because the instructions on mine say use it on wet hair. i'm guessing it's because it's full of cones, so it's more to seal in moisture than anything else.

Depends on what it is, yeah. If it's coney or oily - wet, because it's going to seal moisture in. If it's actually a moisturizing treatment (ie: going to/needs to absorb) dry.

what would be a moisturizing treatment that'd absorb? sorry, i don't mean to be stupid/sarcastic, i've just never heard of one!

If, for instance, I use a cone-free conditioner on my hair as a leave in, or even just slather it on for a deeper treatment and leave it for a few hours. It's doing moisturizing, not just smoothing and sealing. At least I assume so.

But I may pretty easily be confused, here.

*shrug*

I go either way. SMTs are full of humectants, so they may go on wet hair or dry. If it goes on dry hair, I'll tend to sit in a hot bath to make sure there's plenty of moisture in the air around me. I sometimes CWC with an Alaffia conditioner that absorbs really well, and it works nicely on dry hair. And my favorite leave in conditioner works fine on dry hair. Mostly, it's whim/schedule that dictates.

In general, if I know my hair is a dried out mess, I'm really likely to CWC starting on dry hair. If my hair is in good shape, I'm more likely to use more conventional methods.

My George Michael mask specifies to use it on towel dried (damp) hair. It works really well that way. When I used to use Kerastase masks, they specified to use them on damp towel dried hair as well.

I find applying masks on dry hair doesn't allow it to absorb into my hair, and sopping wet hair dilutes the mask too much and it isn't as effective.

I only put hair masks on wet hair, for a couple of minutes. Anything else is too much hassle and threatens to weigh my hair down.

(I guess hennaing doesn't count here, but I do that on dry hair. Yeah, I don't like spending more time than necessary on these things.)

I prefer on wet hair but i'm too lazy. So i put some water in my mask and pretend it works the same than putting it on wet hair :P

The only thing I ever put on dry hair is coconut/almond oil. Any other mask or treatment or anything always goes on wet hair for me

I voted "it depends," but actually I always put my hair masques on damp hair.

Voted that it depends, but it's only very rarely now that it gets used on dry hair (before a wash). That was back when my hair was pretty damaged and needed some good deep treatments. Nowadays: just like conditioner, on wet hair, after a wash.

wet hair definately, I think it means you get more hair that way rather than clumping it together

I used mine on dry hair for the first time because I did my weekend s&d today and it felt so dry and tangled I wanted to cry. I just wanted to try out this way, because my usual routine makes my dry ends dry the next day after washing. I feel frustrated. I have a whole bunch of products and nothing seems to leave it smooth for two days. And I wash every other day so it's not much what I'm asking really! Just two bloody days without tangles!!!!
The one I used on my dry hair today is Garnier Wonder Butter,so when it dried I will update with results.

I voted on dry hair because my main mask is olive oil on pre-wash day.

I have high-porosity hair. It's like a sponge and sucks liquid in quickly but can only hold so much. For me, getting it wet before adding the treatment leaves little room for the treatment to penetrate.

Fatty masks on damp hair, very runny/wet/honey/aloe vera based masks usually dry.

I prefer my masks on wet hair. It works much better for me that way.

I only really use a smearing dollop of mine as a leave-in on mainly the ends of my post-turbied, damp hair.

Both :)

Coconut leave-in spray (oil like) I usually do on damp / wet hair.
And Elvive Extraordinary Oil Coconut hairmask (cream) I do on my dry ends, or rub slightly over my dry braided hair.
It says on the jar you can use it on wet and dry hair.

Usually wet. Only very occasionally dry, if I'm trying to use something up that my hair doesn't really like, but it's a right faff and much harder to distribute. Definitely wet is my preference.

I have never used a mask on dry hair. I usually do masks on a weekend morning after a shower and after I had already washed my hair.

Definitely just-washed towel-blotted hair. I tried doing treatments on dry hair a few times on recommendations from CG groups, but it seems more trouble than it’s worth and silly to shampoo after doing a conditioning treatment. So now I only do masks/treatments after clarifying with a sulfate-laden shampoo every other month or so.

Wet, wet, wet. Always wet. But I squeeze a lot of water out of my hair first. It makes a difference.

In the shower, sopping wet. The wetter the better, because it's much easier to apply evenly and I don't use as much product. I used to towel-dry my hair in the past, but I don't see any difference in the results, so I might as well use less product instead of more.

Some pre-poo treatments I apply on dry hair because it's less annoying that way.
