Ok, so somehow I got to 42 without knowing this. I dont think I have ever seen a split end, and to be honest I dont know that I would know one anyway.

What are they? Where are they? And what is an S & D?

Be gentle - I really am not this dumb, I honestly dont know.

A split end is exactly what it sounds like - an end (but not always) that has split in two or multiple different strands.

Here is a chart of different ways your hair might split.

And S&D stands for search and destroy, where you literally search through a section of hair for these and snip them off.

You can search here and on google, there is plenty about split ends.

These are good resources:

Split-ends are a longhairs' worst nightmare. The only solution is to trim them off. They cannot be repaired (despite all advertising for split-end treatments).

I think S&D might be described in more detail in one of the newbie articles, but I can be wrong about that.

Looking at those pictures actually makes my blood run cold :shudder: I've seen too many splits in my poor, abused, damaged ends. Having said that, I'm perversely fascinated by some of the more "artistic" splits I've found over the last year! :p

Hey ho. I like to think I've removed most of the damage now with S&Ds and a couple of self-trims. :cheese: Now I can work on maintaining good condition and should only have a few splits here and there, rather than a split on every strand! Fingers crossed.

:bowtome: You lucky thing! In this case, ignorance is truly bliss!
