Beautiful! I want to try this tomorrow.
I would love to put a picture on here of my most recent crown braid, but it's not in my albums so I don't know how to put it up here.

I swear I posted this already... perhaps it is floating around the boards in limbo. Here is my wrap around crown braid. I am about 4" shy of going completely around so I cheat with a flower to cover the gap.

The paranda-Idea sound nice! :) I will try that too. For the original version my hair is little too short, need 4 or 5 more inches. I used to make the fake-version, but now my hair is too thin for that.

That's what I was thinking for all here whose hair is not yet long enough. A parandi or scarf will probably help when there's not enough length, plus the braid will be thicker. Just be careful with pins, you don't want to damage the fabric.

Any body else have links to fake or actual crown braids?? I usually just do two Dutch braids and wrap the ends around and pin, but I would like to try an "actual" crown braid :D

My hair is long enough to get just enough overlap using the two braid method, but I CANNOT get it to stay. I tried bobby pins, Amish pins and Good Days Hair pins. With all of them, the braids were sliding loose in about 3 minutes! Argh!!

I could use claw clips or ribbon sew them down, but I really like the look of "no toys". Which orientation do you all put your pins in at? Any other suggestions?

Everyone's braids are so lovely! I also really like that Paranda thing, very pretty, there was a thread about it around here? I'm gonna go check it out!

I don't think my hair is long enough for this yet, but I'm going to give it a try, just to see what I come up with.

I'm going to a wedding this Saturday and want to do something different with my hair that shows off the length without necessarily letting it down, and if i can cobble together something like this it would be perfect! :)

If it comes out decent I'll post some pics.

*le sigh* This style is the reason for my goal length. When I can wrap a single braid around my head, I will be "there". 4-5 more inches, at least... :(

Ditto; this style is a big part of why I'm growing my hair. I'm about three quarters of the way round my head not counting my braid tassel, so it'll be a while yet.

Using a paranda for more length is a great idea though! I might give that a try, or do the ponytail split into two thing instead. :)

ps. If the mods are struggling to think of a style for May 2013, maybe we could have Leia buns? :D

Once again sorry for the crappy pics, but I think you can tell there's no visible part, which is what I like! I tried it like Yulia Tymenshenko, which looks to me like she just braids it then wraps over her head, but due to my taper the heavier side wouldn't stay very well. This way feels very secure and only took four pins, compared to the 15 I had in earlier, lol!

I ordered some hot pink Trash Ties and have been using those to hold up my braid. I made a large orange hair flower that has a reproduction of a vintage Czech button in the center, and I am wearing that in the back. This is one of my favorite hairstyles now. It is super fast to do, and I don't have to fuss with it during the day. The only difference in the way I do mine is that I start mine behind my left ear. I have a wicked taper and if I start right in the back, the braid over the top of my head is much thinner. That is why the hair flower is so nice, as it covers up the gap between the end and beginning of my braid, and that the braid starts on the side.

I wear this and the one braid style pretty regularly in warm weather (like now), and what works best for me is to use a few spiral pins (hair scroos, spin pins, that sort of thing) inserted parallel to the braid from the "inside" edge of the "crown". If you tuck them in nice and close to the braid they don't really show from the back, and of course you can't see them from the front. I'm sorry about the poor description. I'll try to get some pictures up soonish to make my meaning more clear because I'm finding it somewhat difficult to describe well.

I agree with UncommonTart that spin pins are the way to go. I use three: one at the back, to hold in the ends, and two just above my temples to prevent the braid from slipping back (or forward).

I prefer doing twin braids because the taper doesn't show and the style looks thicker, though I can do it both ways.

Here are pics from today. I'm awfully sorry about the frizz, but I washed yesterday and the weather is not cooperating. This style held throughout a very hectic morning at work with no adjustments!

http://img833.imageshack.us/img833/2974/fakecrownbraids.jpg

You can just see the spin pins peeking out, they're less visible in real life.

Sometimes I also do hair-taping with ribbons, though it's a bit more slippery and I usually have to re-do it half-way through the day. It's very pretty, though, will have to try it and take pics soon!

Not a crown braid, exactly, though similar enough, I think...
It is a variation on the Cleopatra (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QigGoRY_Nic)style - one that will only work if your hair is long enough (mine is between tailbone and classic).
When I had braided my hair, I brought the braid over the top of my head, and temporarily fastened the end under the dutch braid with a bobby pin (full circle for each braid) and then fastened it all with an extra small flexi on each side - making sure to catch both the Dutch braid and the braid end, as well as the other braid coming up. :D

Thanks! You don't even need a tutorial; it's so easy!
Make two 3-strand braids on each side, and then pull them over to the opposite side and bobby-pin them. :)

How is this? (my first post on hairstyle-of-the-month threads)
It's different, because I started with a french braid.

Oh, I LOVE "monstrous" pictures. :) That is some crown braid, herdaughter! Your wonderful length makes it look like the real deal! A real hair crown, for sure!

Aw! This style is so cute. How did I only just now see this thread? Well, I'll get some in before the end of the month! It'll be great when I'm moving to keep my hair from suffocating me.

Eta: I'll update this with a picture (if my hair is long enough) as per the rules that I only just saw and read <3

I finally tried this style (http://flic.kr/p/c7CjGu) again using spin pins to hold it. Success! I still wish my braid was long enough to get all the way around, but this'll do in the meantime. :p

Oooo, i just found this nifty page with photos from the 40's specificly for wrapped crown braids, and thought of this page!

http://fortieswardrobe.blogspot.com/2012/03/braided-updo.html

I never would have connected the 40's with this style. Always learning new things I guess ;)

I call this a coronet braid and it's one of my favorite styles, especially when done with a rope. I can get it to stay a while without pins, just by tucking it under itself, and it's a great thing to do with my sleep braid in the morning.

I will edit this post with a picture tomorrow when I am not on my phone.

Ok I tried the way the tutorial I posted showed, and I *love* it! I thought it turned out good for a first attempt :D
Sorry for the crappy pics, everyone is sleeping and I'm not good at self pics!

Yours looks just as lovely!!

Beautiful braids everyone! I love all the variations possible with this style. I've worn this quite a bit this month. My sig now has a picture of one I did with a rope braid :D I couldn't get a good pic of the front... But it looked cool from the back!

Not exactly a crown braid. But these are my quadruple maiden braids.

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=9241&pictureid=120596

woooow I love your quadruple maiden braids! I've tried this but my braids weren't as lovely and thick as yours and less well-styled :D I'm going to try this on my date tomorrow night! Thanks for the idea Blondie ;)

P.s. did you just bun the leftover hair at the back of your head? Or did you braid/bun? I can't tell from the picture. I never know what to do with that part after maiden braiding!

Okay, I posted crappy web cam photos earlier, here's a couple for the day after with an actual camera:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v317/young_artist/Hair/DSCN0016.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v317/young_artist/Hair/DSCN0010.jpg
(Two braids, going opposite directions.)

And here's a possible hair style for a play I was in (hair sprayed black, yuck). Single braid, wrapped around.

Late entry here too, but I did take these photos last month.
My hair isn't long enough for a proper one, but I am excited to have the length to do anything at all, so here are my pics.

Sorry for the late response, shazzshazshz. I actually used all of my hair in the braids, so I didn't have any left over in the back. :)

I took this last month but have been too busy (lazy) to upload it. :D

^ In that case, did you just tuck the ends inside after you pinned it over? Or you pinned them across and into a loop?

I had a braid on each side, then pulled the right one to the left, and the left to the right (to do away with the part). I pinned each around my head, and was left with the ends right about at the top, so I tucked them under and pinned them. :) (Hope that isn't too confusing.)

I swear I posted this already... perhaps it is floating around the boards in limbo. Here is my wrap around crown braid. I am about 4" shy of going completely around so I cheat with a flower to cover the gap.
