View Full Version : Decisions, Decisions (re: Gray hair and a pic)

I've been gradually going silver for the past few years. At this point, most of it's concentrated in my bangs and temples -front of my hair, basically - but is starting to spread pretty nicely through the rest of my hair. This is also the hair that happens to be bleached and covered with veggie dye (along with my tips).
Because of the placement, it's easy enough to continue to dye without touching up the bleach and continue to dye until I've trimmed off the bangs and ends - it'll just turn into a gradient up front. The side bits I'm content to leave alone and just let fade out to blonde and disappear into the mess.
So, stopping the dye on its own isn't an issue or a particularly big deal. What *does* bother me is the fact that I am not going gray. I am going translucent white. Not a big deal by itself. It's very pretty, really. It's just.
I'm pink. I don't look good blonde. I really don't look good white. And my bangs, where the color is right against my skin.
But! I... don't want to cover my gray indefinitely. Covering it up with blues and purples doesn't bother me. Covering it up with another 'real' (natural) color is a bigger commitment, and a whole head thing.
So, reading all of my waffling? What would you do?

(I figured a picture with my face in it would be helpful)

Do you have any pictures of you in a white shirt, or with something white near your face? I ask because given your colouring and the colour of the shirt you're wearing I'd think you'd totally rock white hair.

is your natural color blonde going white?

No. My natural color is everything but the blue in the photo.
I looked for a pic in white, but can't find one. Will take one or look harder when I get home. Apparently, I mostly wear brights.

I would keep dying it awesome colours, but I'm eagerly awaiting the day I'm mostly white/grey so that I can do it different colours without prebleaching.
I'm sure there's a member who has naturally dark hair and just Manic Panics the greys.

My grandmother has a very pink complexion as well, similar to yours, and her hair is a beautiful snow white. It looks great. If you do let it go white it'll be a very different look from what you've got now, of course, but I think it's likely to look good. I love the blue, though. :bluesmile

I like the above idea of just manic panicing the greys w/o doing any bleaching. I think dark hair with blue highlights is good.

This. ^^
I'd just keep doing what you're doing if I were you. Not having to bleach all of it in front to be able to dye it blue will come in handy. But I get where you're concerned with the rest of your hair, what if the gray spreads through there. You might have to touch the rest up with dye as well in future. But are you there yet, I mean, are you that gray that that's even an option?

I think the white will actually work out rather well. Natural white and bleached white are different.

Oh, the rest of my hair is turning gray, too - well, white, but it's doing it in a more subtle, less obvious way (though spreading from the front back). That doesn't bother me/worry me. I just wasn't sure how I felt about having white around my face. I do dye over all my hair with the veggie dye, mind you, but it washes out of my natural/dark hair fast, so I just get pretty little blue sparkles spread out, that no one but me can see, unless the sun hits right.

This makes me feel tons better. Thinking about it, my grandma has absolutely white hair, too, and is very, very pink. She looks adorable. I just kept thinking back to me with that bleaching disaster (or what I look like without the bleached out bits covered) and recoiling in horror. Waiting and seeing's not a bad idea, at all.

In searching for a photo of me in white, I found a picture I took during the brief 'bleach it until it won't hold color to get rid of an unnatural red, whack it all off' phase my hair was in and -
It's not nearly as horrifying as I remember it being.

Though I still don't love it, it's - well, yeah. Not repulsive ;-) (Even accounting for flash washing me out rather a lot.)
...Thanks for making me go find photos.

My mom has several shades of grey hair, from white, to steel grey. She is really pink in complexion and looks fine.

I've got a mix. Some of my hairs are silvery and fine, others are pure white and wirey. I don't like the white ones very much, but what can ya do?
I wasn't sure about going silvery because I've always had golden blonde hair and golden beige skin. But the silvery works just fine. In fact, I prefer it.

I'd let it all go white!
Although, I do love your current blue picture! I can't wait to go white ( one white hair I have is like a snow flake!) so I can dye it crazy colors without bleach.

My white/silvery hair is, thus far, drastically different texture wise. My brown hair is medium coarse, the white is fine, even the cirgin stuff coming in. It's different for sure, but kind of fun.

Oh, I won't be giving up the blue any time soon. I've had it for a year and, really, I think I'd bewilder everyone who knows me, and myself, if I gave it up now. It's become a me thing, you know?

I totally get it. I absolutely love it! Is you whole head white or just the bangs?

Just my bangs and toward the front. The rest is getting there but much more slowly. Random single hairs instead of clumps.

I think you look great in the pic you did find, even with the flash. It looks very modern.

The great thing about white, is how easy it is to put pretty colours over it :). I kinda wish my hair was going white instead of gray/silver. I think the silver is kinda cool... but I'm not ready to embrace it yet anyway :). If I were going white, however, I think I'd have some fun with interesting colour!

I am *completely* disinterested in covering my gray, overall. Mostly I just waffle a bit about looking too weird with the white up front. I think I'll live with it, though, because it's pretty and, really, I am kinda proud of my gray, dammit. I EARNED IT.
