Wow... That's awesome! I've wondered how women cared for their hair in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

My boss at the salon I used to work in had a photo of the Sutherland sisters. It was really cool!

Notice how almost all of those women kept their hair in braids? The braid-waves are EVERYWHERE!!

Looking at them makes me a bit sad, as I think my hair is terminal length and is just barely classic.

I love hair that goes down to ankle length as a maximum when it is out. However, as long as they loved their hair, it is all good. :D
I REALLY love long braided hair, no matter what the length.

Haha--I was just noticing that all those women in the 1800s had braid waves. I believe that in the 19th/early 20th century, long hair was deemed 'femenine' and equated with youth much more than today.

What I find interesting is that the women back then didn't have thinning ends! Makes me wonder if our world today is wearing out hair down faster, or perhaps diets back then were real food/no processed foods, so their hair showed the health of their diet?

I can't imagine not having a shower/running water indoors to wash my hair--i know some women in those generations didn't wash their hair much...dang, my scalp would have itched like mad!

Me too. But I don't think it was the length... some just looked dull and frayed at the ends IMO.

Yes, I think we do wear our hair out with all the washing, styling, and chemicals that we expose it to. My grandmother had hip-length braids, and her hair was thick all the way to the bottom without ever trimming. She only washed her hair in water from the rain barrel out back. If there was no rain water, or if it was too cold to wash her hair outside, she simply did not wash her hair. I believe that she used castile soap. Period. That is the way she was taught to take care of her hair, and that is what she did all of her life. Most of the time her hair was in two braids wrapped around her head.

P.S. Sometimes my grandma's hair made me go Ewwwwwwwwwwwww! I could smell her head at the dining table sometimes, I remember.
