View Full Version : Mane 'n Tail?

When I've been browsing online looking for ideas contributing to hair growth, I keep hearing things about the Mane 'n Tail shampoo and conditioner. It was originally meant for animal use, but is now manufactured for people too, and I've heard (read) some pretty good reviews about it when it comes to aiding hair growth.

I searched but couldn't find anything on here about it, so I'm curious to see if anyone has used it, and how effective it was?

I use it & like it. I don't know how much it helps for growth in particular, my hair grows at a pretty standard rate, probably more due to good eating habits. I do think the M&T line is a good one though. I found the best prices on it at Sally's.

My bad! I used the search function but nothing came up, mods feel free to delete if you want!

(also thanks for the links, apparently I'm useless at searching, haha.)

I used it for about six months a few years back and it didn't do much of anything for me so I went back to old favorites

I use it right now, I (temporarily) gave up on water-only for MnT so I hope it works. Too early to tell if it does.

I know a very long haired lady who uses this and likes it very much.

I bought some last time I was over in the States, we can't get it here in Ireland.

To be honest it did not really suit my hair, and if I used it too often it dried my hair and scalp out. I didn't see any increase in my growth rate either, to me it's just another shampoo really.

I used it for about a month and found that the protein in it was a bit much for my hair. I do still use it about once a month to give my hair the protein that it needs, but in the meantime I use a moisturizing shampoo (Tresemme Naturals Moisturizing).

It is really hit or miss... some people rave about it and it does their hair wonders, and others (like myself) use it and find that it just doesn't work with their hair on a regular washing basis.

The search function on this site is pretty terrible, I just use google to search this site.

As far as mane 'n tail goes, it gave me some pretty terrible protein buildup. I liked the shampoo though (I do CWC). I could probably use the conditioner once in a while, not on a regular basis though. Prior to the protein buildup, I liked it alright.

Same here. It works for some people but it didnt for me. I started using hair oils and I love them. I use argon and jamaican black castor oil. I used Mira for 6-8 weeks but its too expensive so I changed to the castor oil. Mira gave me 2 inches of growth in 6-8 weeks! I thought that was pretty darn good-at least for my hair it was:D I just started the castor oil so its too soon to say if its just as good but I think it will be. I heard its great for hair:)

The search function does not work well for me. I've tried entering my query different ways, and I still haven't figured it out. So, don't feel bad.

I use it once in a while for the protein in it. I also use it to wash and condition the dogs.

I had no idea that Main and Tail had protein in it! Im new here and I still have so much to learn. I just read yesterday on here that is a strand of hair just stretches and does not go back to its natural shape than it lacks protein. And if it just snaps then it needs moisture. Mine snapped! I guess thats why Main and Tail dried out my hair:)

It's worth a try if you want to thicken your hair. I like the conditioner more than the shampoo. I always used it after a bad haircut when the woman thinned it out way too much!

My mother had thin hair, told her to use it and now has thick hair like mine! :)

I used it for a year and my hair grew normally, not any faster not any slower. I do like how it cleaned my hair and the way it smells.I don't know what else to say but you should try it and see what you think.

I used it for a while way back when but I don't recall the results. My mom swears by it for growth but I haven't seen her use it for a while now either  Guess I'm not much help.

I use it about once a month, I find that any more than that and it doesn't really suit my hair. I don't know if it's increased my growth, my growth has increased in the last few months, but I think it's a combination of many things that I'm doing, not just the Mane and Tail. I do like it though, give it a try and see if it works for your hair.

Thanks for all the replies! I've got myself the shampoo and conditioner to have a play with, so I guess I'll see what happens :) My hair could do with some thickening so it may be good for that, I'm not sure if it's lacking in protein but I'm sure I'll find out soon enough!

I used the shampoo only for about 2 weeks now, and my condish is on its way (hard to get it here, I'm in Sweden). Love the poo as a poo which is a miracle given that after water-only, in theory I should hate everything poo and I do. This one I like. But way too early to tell whether it helps hair grow faster.

Anyhow before deciding I was in read-only mode for several days in a row and I read about the conditioner on multiple sites that "use it only fom ears down". That's what I will do anyway. Keep us posted, I will post if and when I get any extra growth as well (although I've changed/added other things as well so it will be hard to tell if t was the MnT)

I'm particularly interested in your feedback about the conditioner.

Off topic but what gives with the internal search function? Whenever I try and use it, it always produces 0 results and I end up searching the forum via google. Does anyone else get this problem?

I haven't tried to find threads with the keywords because I already had the info from Google. But I tried to find members here who use it. In the "advanced search" I had to type "Mane 'n Tail", "Mane n Tail", "Mane 'n' Tail", "Mane & Tail", "Mane and Tail" etc all separately because it's the most horrendous search engine that can't interpret "Mane * Tail" or "Mane ? Tail" and the like. Hoooorrrriiiibbleee.

Actually it does work...

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/search.php?searchid=3794804

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/search.php?searchid=3794806

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/search.php?searchid=3794811

AND this is my newest discovery, it does work with the Google "OR" operator:

--threads:
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/search.php?searchid=3794839

--individual comments (there are threads with other titles like "Horse Shampoo" but MnT is mentioned:
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/search.php?searchid=3794845

The same search does not seem to work to find members with these search terms in their haircare routine. LOL. No results for "mane and tail" OR "mane 'n tail" OR "mane n tail" OR "mane & tail" OR "mane&tail" OR "mane 'n' tail" OR "mane n' tail". Now that's a shame that a search engine is that much inconsistent.

I've been using it since last month, for every other day washing (before I started stretching my washes, now it's probably once/twice a week). Before I was doing CWC it started to really dry out my hair. And I'm using the moisturizing MNT. I think that that's a common theme, and it's worse with the regular MNT. Some people find that to be a worse problem than others, mine more so I think because I have very fine, soft hair at baseline so it's prone to over drying at the ends. My hair does love the protein and tends to thicken nicely with it. I haven't noticed a huge jump with length. I am doing oiling with coconut and almond as well, and am taking much gentler care of my hair as well as wearing it up more. So, if my hair is growing more in length I can't attribute it to MNT or other things I'm doing.

Don't know it any of this helps - but if youre going to use MNT, I would recommend doing CWC, because it tends to over-dry, and if you do research on that, you'll probably find the same thing. ;)

I tried it, and didn't think it was that great. It seemed kind of stripping (well, so do most sulfate shampoos), and I felt like it made me shed. It's hard to tell since I was starting to pay more attention to shedding in general around that time, but it wasn't a risk I wanted to take.

I used it since I was young and I don't think it did much. However I guess it also depends on your hair routine :)

I tried it once a years ago, I don't remember much except that I didn't really like it. I also didn't really like the smell...

Update. I tried the herbal version of the conditioner as a leave-in from ears down amd mmmmmm it's very good for me. I think I found my leave-in... (I've been using castor oil straight on the ends, that's the only thing that worked so far and now this; I wonder how long I can use it like that before it starts to build up...)
