I have a very itchy scalp and have always had scalp issues my whole life. It's calmed down a lot from no longer chemically treating it in the past couple years but still itchy and flaky at times and as soon as my scalp gets oily it's unbearable.

Anyways, I know Oil of oregano is an antifungal, antibacterial, and basically natures strongest antibiotic, clears up up candida and yeast infections easily and is a cure all for sooo many things so I started looking up information about it on the scalp and it is said to increase hair growth, cleanse the scalp and make hair healthier and reduce baldness!

So, I just started mixing it in with my CO washes but it's too soon to tell if it's working since I've only used it for less than a week, I was wondering if because it can clear up all those scalp issues including anything involving candida/yeast if it may be somewhat comparable to what Monistat does for hairgrowth. Except this would be a healthier more natural approach with less side effects. Has anyone tried oil of oregano on their hair?

I'm going to give it a few more weeks and see if I notice any added growth and will update you guys and if anyone else has any experience with Oil of Oregano I'd love to hear it!!

EDIT: Just wanted to add that I'm only using 2-4 drops of the oil in my CO washes but perhaps mixing it with a little water or carrier oil and applying it directly to the scalp would be a way to see faster growth, as with the Monistat. The thing with Oil of Oregano is it can sting and burn the skin at it's at full concentration, so it MUST be diluted in some way and never used full strength. I just figured adding it to my CO washes would help with my scalp but perhaps I can add a more potent application in for added growth????? Just brainstorming lol

Oh wow, I hadn't heard of that before but it sounds really interesting. It makes sense that it would probably help provide optimum conditions for growth if nothing else, no? And anything that takes care of itchy scalp is a blessing.

I can't claim to have any experience, but I want to try it out now myself. I look forward to your updates!

This does sound fantastic. I've been looking into what to put in a mix of oils for my scalp, and if what you say is true I think this will be on the list! I look forward to hearing updates, and I'll post mine if/when I have them...

I just got some to try. Besides, if it doesn't work for the hair, it has many other uses that i am sure i can put it to the test :) Thank you for the informative post!

Hi guys, glad you found this thread worth of watching :flower:

Just wanted to give a slight update that I only used this twice b/c I am doing with my CO washes, but am leaving my CO with the oil or oregano sit on my head for about an hour before rinsing, no crazy growth or anything yet but my scalp feels much better! The second time I did it I noticed I had a lot of flakes that must have been lifted from my scalp because it was noticeable in my hair when wet, but not once it dried because they basically combed out. It was almost as if my scalp was shedding some of the older residue from my oily scalp falkes, but not in a dry scalp way...hard to explain but bottom line it was a good sign to me.

I also find that the odor of the oil of oregano is very strong but mixed in with my Suave coconut conditioner, it's almost undetectable.

I do want to try a stronger application to see whether it can totally clear up my scalp and maybe cause some noticeable growth but have to get my hands on a color applicator bottle and don't have any on hand so have to make a special trip to Sally's for that and haven't been able to make my way there yet.

I'll keep you posted :)

I finally got my shipment of OoO (fun acronym!) and I put it to work last night. The one I got is of 83-85% Carvacol strength. i read the warning to not put this directly on the skin unless diluted a bit. So I melted some coconut oil and then added about 10 drops of the OoO to the mixture. I applied it to the scalp and massaged a little bit. the smell was very pleasant, and I beleive promoted a better night of sleep as well! i cannot tell if it will help with the growth, but it sure feels good on my scalp! i'll report in a month or so.... :)

sounds like a neat idea! I have a full bottle of Oil of Oregano in my bathroom. Usually I use it for plantar warts. Have also used it internally to balance (bad) yeast and flora. Can't say I like the smell....or the taste :P

Barely.there ~ could you please tell me "how" you take internally the OoO?
I'd like to maybe add this to my supplements, but I am a little afraid of the taste and the side effects? I'd appreciate your input. Thank you :)

I used something like that - or maybe it was oil of thyme - as part of the treatment to get rid of lice years ago. haha; it made the house smell like an Italian restaurant

I don't know if it helped, though. We had an incredibly resistant strain of lice for awhile.

I was thinking how it would smell. Having thyme, rosemary, basil, sage and now oregano... am I going to smell like a spice rack? lol

Yay!! I can't wait to hear how it goes. I like the feeling of it on my scalp too and it really has taken away all my itchies too! I think mine is 70% Carvacol so you got a really super strong good one! :D

I am not sure what you are calling Oil of Oregano exactly. If it is oregano (corydothymus capitatus) essential oil, please be careful, as with all essential oils.

Oregano EO should not be used by people suffering from hypertension and has to be diluted in a carrier oil or similar (not water!) as it is dermocaustic. It also is hepatotoxic, so don't use it long term.

thanks, I assumed the poster meant EO..that's what I was going to buy.

Should it be an oil infused with oregano then?

The Oil of Oregano I purchased is found in healthfood stores and IS infact essential oil slightly diluted with olive oil, you could also buy the essential oil yourself and dilute it with oil by yourself. The OoO I have is very strong even though it's diluted a bit so it still requires dilution and says right on the bottle not to use it straight on topical applications.

This is a link to the brand I have... Source Naturals Oil of Oregano (http://www.amazon.com/Source-Naturals-Wellness-Oregano-Ounce/dp/B000GFHP6Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1335374782&sr=8-1) It can also be used internally to fight off colds and infections. There are other brands of OoO so you can chose a different brand or buy the essential oil and make the dilution yourself, like I said it definitely needs to be diluted, it is very very strong and can burn if applied directly. It is also very relaxing if applied correctly and makes the scalp feel very refreshed :)

I agree, my scalp feels really good! I love OoO!
Mrsbaybeegirl, do you also ingest it? If you do, what for and how do you do it?

I have ingested it before and take it when I suspect I am getting sick or if I am around someone who is sick. The bottle I have suggests mixing 1-4 drops in 8 oz of water but when I tried that I just didn't like the taste and would rather it be once and done so I took the dropper it came with and put about 2 drops under my tongue (making sure it doesn't touch my taste buds) tilt my head back and chug a big glass of water lol I can barely taste it at all if I do it fast enough. The bottle I have suggests it as a DAILY supplement but I don't feel it's necessary for everyday use internally.

Before I posted this thread, I was curious to see if anyone here had tried OoO for their hair/scalp, since I had came across articles on the web stating it helps with hair growth, so I used LHC search and although there wasn't much about putting it on the scalp, there was a thread going around with people supplementing with it for health and fighting off colds, some of them used OoO in pill form, others used the oil. I've read in other places on the web some people mix it in with orange juice or milk, but I'm sure even the sweetest OJ won't mask the taste 100% LOL

Okay guys, so I've been using the OoO for about 3 weeks now and I have definitely seen growth! Almost our of no where! However there are some thing it can be attributed to. First off I have grown a solid measurable inch (by my roots from henna) in 6 weeks, which may not seem like a lot but for me it is. And given a 1/2 inch per month is normal, I'm still above average growth. And last time it took me from November til March to see one inch of growth! BUT that was my typical winter stall, so all things considered my one inch sprouting up could be just a growth spurt. The other thing I have to mention, which makes me think it's the OoO is this inch sprouted out of no where, it's NOT like I saw steady growth for 6 weeks (and I can easily see growth at the roots)...it's only been the last 2 weeks! I have pictures that I'm trying to upload in my albums but there is a problem going on with the site and I'm not able to at the moment.

I do think the OoO has had something to do with this! I also did my my first potent OoO application (mixed with coconut oil only) about a week ago and have been adding several drops to my Co washes (about 2-3x's a week) and let it sit on my head for an hour+ before rinsing instead of the 5-10 mins for my CO washes. I also add a drop of ylang ylang EO to my CO wash and 2 drops of grapefruit oil EO..this maybe a contributing factor although I've been adding those for about 2 months now minus the OoO:)

I have also STOPPED taking Biotin for the past month or more and am surprised I had such good growth without it. Biotin made me break out and my nails were chipping off like crazy and it never did much for my hair either I guess!

Anyways, I will report more in a couple more weeks :)

Wow really interesting. How much OoO mixed with coconut oil did you use?

It was about a tablespoon mixed with about 10 drops of OoO. It ended up being too much oil for my scalp so I only used about half the application. I used a medicine dropper and parted my hair while running the dropper down each parting. Then gave myself a nice scalp massage :) The OoO is already pre-diluted with olive oil so if you would be using the OoO that is pure essential oil, you may want to take that into consideration when mixing.

I'm bumping this up as I have some oregano oil that I use when I have been around people with colds or feel one coming on myself. I have to say for that it works wonders.

Is anybody still using this oil for scalp conditions or hair growth?

Oil of oregano boosts immunity just like goldenseal root does plus like the OP mentiioned it works great for bacterial and fungal infections. I use it for throat and sinus infections as well as itchy feet. It's amazing stuff but it's potent and can be very drying to hair. I use it diluted on my scalp only.
Awesome thread.

I have seen several article claiming to heal scalp conditions and helps hair growth, like at the bottom of this one: http://www.stylecraze.com/articles/benefits-of-oregano-oil-for-skin-hair-and-health/.

Keeping an eye on this thread

I have a bottle of oregano oil diluted in olive oil as it's very potent. It is a standardised extract. I add 4 drops of this oil to some water or juice and drink it, I also add some pau d'arco tincture particularly if I feel a cold coming on and together these two work really well.
