So I found this on pinterest:
Hairstyles for Teenage Girls, US 1912 (http://digitalgallery.nypl.org/nypldigital/dgkeysearchdetail.cfm?trg=1&strucID=706335&imageID=825172&total=689&num=100&word=1910s&s=1&notword=&d=&c=&f=&k=0&lWord=&lField=&sScope=&sLevel=&sLabel=&imgs=20&pos=103&e=w)

I love finding things like this... Can anyone tell me how the bottom right ribbon braid was done? Something is going on where the braids meet, I'm not sure what.

I can't tell you, but thanks for sharing! That is really neat to see.

To me it looks just like a side english braid, with a peak of ribbon under the flower, or something like that. Maybe it just is the rightmost strand coming over the ribbon (so it goes to the nape between the middle and right strands)?

Interesting find!

The bottom right one looks to me like a small bun with the tail left hanging. I could be totally wrong though.

The middle part at the nape of the neck looks like a four stand or five strand braid.

I tried the 'three low coils' - they are roughly figure-8s. My hair keeps spitting out the bobby pins so it isn't very secure. Wrapped with my skinny silk scarf. It's messy, but it is my first try.

Thank you, Amethyste! It feels like a jumbled mess. :p

I enjoyed looking at Madonna's hair evolution too, thanks. She sure has had a lot of different styles! I like the medium waves and medium blond best I think.

The bottom right is a bit hard for me to see very clearly, but it appears two side braids were done, bunned up, and then the rest of the length was left to hang and they made a braid out of that. I can't even see a ribbon in it, frankly. It's just kind of small.

I like old plates such as this.

There are some magazines, such as The Queen, which sometimes shows neat ads for products and comes along with an updo idea......or wig purchase ideas of the time.

Bobby pins tend to throw up when there's too much hair that's too tight trying to be included in the pin itself. The other option is to use long bobbypins, which are technically known as hair roller pins.

I thought the bottom left was a combination braid. The rest I'm keeping a watch on.

I'm not usually a fan of hairstyles from that period, but some of those look quite nice. I think I'd get some strange looks if I tried to replicate them, though...

It's interesting that Madonna never went red. She seems to have tried every other colour (blonde, brunette, even black at one point). Now I'm kinda curious why she was never a redhead! You'd think her complexion would work with it since she looks good as a warm golden blonde.
