View Full Version : Anyone tried marmite/vegemite?

I just wondered if any UK, NZ or AU people ever tried it (on their heads) or consuming it on a regular basis could bring anything? The same for kombucha. But I've seen in LHC search later that there was a Kombucha thread before.
I'm not going for Marmite/Vegemite myself because it is veeery expensive here and you can get it only in English shops. But just curious :)

Ooh it's too smelly to put on my head! Plus I wouldn't want to waste it in that way. I loooooooooove Marmite, but I can't eat it every day (migraines). I have it as a treat.

I'd love to try it internally one day :D I imagine it to be salty, no? Smelly things aren't a prob for me as long as you can get rid of that smell later. But yeast must be good, I imagine.... IDK about externally, though.
Does it give you headaches?

Yes, it's quite salty (which I don't mind - I like salt). But it does have quite a strong smell to it. Ooh it's lovely, but too much yeast definitely gives me migraines.

I love marmite but it would be pretty high on my list of things to NEVER put on my head!! Is it a tip you read online? Marmite is really thick and sticky!

I don't think I would ever put marmite on my head as the smell would drive me insanse, but its rather tasty once in a while to ingest. (btw it is also sold in Canada ;) ).

no, I haven't read it online. I was just thinking of using beer again and then the word yeast popped out in my head and I just thought beer, kombucha.... marmite :D But it'd be probably a pain to get it out anyway. I've no idea how it actually feels like. Yet have to try kombucha when I get my hands on the cheap kind, or ask my grandmom to make some yum yum :cheese:

I agree, it's up there with neat molasses for stickiness and it would smell awful. I used to eat it on toast most days as an undergrad - cant say I noticed any affect on my hair.

I'd love to try molasses if it wasn't so difficult to find and wasn't that expensive. But I've tried other sticky things that work well even with my fine hair... Does it smell awful???

But on the head? No!

I hate the smell of marmite (vegemite smells a bit better to me, but not great)
Even for people who like the smell while they're eating the stuff, I think if it was under your nose for hours it would make you feel sick.
I do think it would probably be hard to wash out of your hair too. TBH I'd have to be totally desperate for my hair to grow faster before I put anything like this on my head.

I think having it on a toast should do it too :) even better, perhaps. Nutrition makes such a difference!

I had never seen vegemite in the stores until a few months ago and it made me laugh. I have been told the company sued Men at Work for their song "Down Under" that rumor has always cracked me up. Somethings are just to silly.

Molasses can be found in the pancake aisle usually, next to the syrups for some bizzare reason. i use it in baking, the smell is a thousand times better than marmite. :) lol. Still, you know that saying "slower than molasses" ? Turtles move faster that is how sticky it is!

I live in EU country where it isn't common. You can find it only in the bio supermarkets where everything costs an arm and a leg))) I'd use it too but have to go with the subtitutes.
Does it smell like an iron supplement?

It smells like ginger cookies to me  I wonder if you can buy it online?

Safeway carries it. It is in the spice aisle, next to the vanilla extract. (i guess since technically it is a yeast extract?)
I have also seen it in Price Mart, but not at Sobeys.

urgh no! I am firmly in the "Hate it" camp for that stuff, I would never consider putting that stuff on my hair. It's nasty

For what it's worth, molasses is nearly the same as a really dark treacle. You might have more luck searching for it by that name.

I adore ginger cookies :crush: Yes, I know everything is available online. I'm currently giving a try to some other things. So first is that and then maybe molasses one day.

Thank you for suggestion! Is it that Golden gyrup in a nice tin? I've seen that one in a British shop last summer. Should have taken it.... I use the beet syrup as a substitute atm, just bought it yesterday.

I don't think I'll be putting marmite on my head... but there was a rumour/joke when I was at school that marmite smeared on the head cured baldness! Not sure where that one came from!
Anyhoo... all this talk of marmite has made me into a hungry drooling monster so I'm off to get my marmite fix! Smeared on pumpkin seed ryvita :) yum!

Well I've never had marmite.
I've never used either on my head.
But I LOVE vegemite. Its yummy. But it can taste salty and hit you quite hard. But I like to eat mine on toast, with margarine, with cheese as well. It tones down the strong flavour, but not completely.
Best Ever.

We don't have safeways or price marts in southern or eastern ontario, so I'm not familiar. I misread anyway, I'm on team Vegemite :D . Thanks though!

Marmite is delicious! on hot buttered toast, on toast soldiers to dip into a soft-boiled egg, on whole-grain bread with crunchy peanut butter for a sandwich that's crunchy and savoury and infinitely better than PB&J.
I'm gutted that my tummy won't tolerate wheat any more so I can't enjoy all those ways to eat Marmite.
No way in the world would I put it on my head. If you saw it, you'd understand.

Well, I got Marmite in my pantry and I live in Washington State! lol It was not cheap, but I like it. I got it at a grocery store just down the hill from where I live. :)
And no... I wouldn't want to ever put that stuff on my head. :D
ETA: And I used to make my own kombucha. Yum. ♥

Not exactly. Molasses is really deep dark brown-black and has a strong flavor. If you found black treacle, Wikipedia says that's not quite as dark and strong, but close.

I was reading yesterday about mythological animals. Apparently putting Vegemite on your head prevents "drop bear" attacks. :eyebrows:

As an Australian I feel it's my duty to point out that if this method were to work you would have to use authentic vegemite, I am certain any substitutes would not work ;) they certainly don't taste as good.
I'm not willing to waste such a delicacy on my hair and I do wonder whether it might even stain lighter hair colours.
My grandmother used to mix it with hot water (and some other things) for a cough remedy, so it does dilute. If anyone was considering it, I'd definitely dilute first and even then I'm not sure how readily it would rinse out!

Not sure what I could possibly find but frankly speaking, I haven't really looked for it :o
Bear attacks? See how useful! :D

Surely diluted! Just like honey, so I imagined :)
IDK, I'd love some new recipes, experiments, etc. to pop out (no, no vegemite :) ). Something new and big we could be all working on. Maybe it's just spring :crush:

Mythological animals? There's signs all around my university warning against them. 1 in 10 Australians will be the victim of a drop attack in their life. Next time you come, I'll show you how mythical 'drop bears' are. Koalas are put off by the smell of vegemite, because it's similar to the pheromone smell of a very dominant male. Putting it on your head is important, because then it's closer to the bear in the treeensuring he gets a good whiff, and preventing drop attacks.
Linked is the australian Dept. of Dangerous Fauna Managment warning ad. Be warned, it is gory.
