View Full Version : Just a little more red! Need some henna advice, please

Hi all :)
So, a few months ago I decided to henna over my bleached blonde hair. I started out with a cassia/Jamila mix, then switched to just Jamila, and finally tried Yemeni. This was taken about four days after I applied the Yemeni:

At first the color still looked too "blonde" (yeah, I don't know what I was thinking), but now it's grown on me and I really do love it. The thing is...
I really really really wouldn't mind having just a touch more red. Just a wee bit. Not darker, no; just REDDER. So it reads as "red" rather than "copper". And I know henna gets darker the more you apply it and I most certainly don't want that. No way, no how.
I went to the eye doctor's a week or so ago and he dilated my pupils and because of that I had to wear sunglasses home, and my hair looked so lovely and vivid and RED through the polarized lenses it's a good thing I wasn't driving because I would have probably gotten into an accident, I was so enthralled by the color.
How sad it was to take them off and be normal again. :-(
Um. But I digress. I don't wear sunglasses 24/7, and neither does the rest of the world. Soooo...please help? :pegasus: :flower::puppykisses::bunny::gift:
I'm sitting on 100 grams each of Cassia, Yemeni, and Red Raj. As tempted as I am to just slather my entire hair with Red Raj, I'm also scared it's going to turn out too dark. I was thinking a mix might work. Maybe something like:
50/50 cassia/Red Raj;
or
50/50 Yemeni/Red Raj;
or
100% Red Raj left on for 55 minutes ONLY!
Or none of the above?
Gah. I know I'm probably over thinking it, but I'd rather build the color up over time (moreredredredredred) than go too dark.
Any advice would be appreciated! Edit: Eek, only 10 images allowed per post! Please pretend there's a whole slew of chocolate bar, cake, puppy, flower, and I'm not worthy smilies here. All for you.

Personally I think you should do a gloss with some Manic Panic.

I agree, add some Manic Panic to conditioner or a bit to your henna mix. It wouldn't damage your hair at all since it's a direct deposit dye, and it's not permanent so it wouldn't be disastrous if you didn't like it. :P

Thanks for the response, ladies. :)
How long would Manic Panic stay in my hair? My only concern is that my hair is pretty porous thanks to all the stupid bleach that I had put on it last summer, and I fear the MP won't really absorb well or stay on long.

Im glad you started this thread, I'm at a similar stage. I could almost do with a smidge of lightening first then henna the manic panic but I don't want to damage.

Manic panic should last about 1-2 months depending on how frequently you wash your hair. And I guess having porous hair is better, it will take up the colour easily.

don't think I heard about a manic panic gloss... are yous saying I can add just a little bit of manic panic to conditioner to get a more subtle color? how long will it last doing a gloss? I don't want to go a unnaturally red color, but a little more red sometimes would be nice.

:shocked:I too am interested in this. I have kinda heard of manic panic glosses - when my brother's wanted blue hair I had them use a special conditioner I had mixed together after I dyed it to keep it blue, it had the hair dye and regular conditioner in it. I didn't realize it would work for my hair though :o. So the manic panic won't damage my hair? Because I switched to Hennaing my hair because everyone says henna doesn't damage hair. End of hijack and sorry. :run:

I'm currently trying to get rid of my henna, but that's another story!
Anyway...what I've done in the past (to make my hair look more orange, as opposed to red) is to use Crazy Color, which is similar to Manic Panic.
It made my hair look a brighter, stronger (but still natural) orangy coppery red.
It washed out in two or three weeks I think.
So I also think something similar in a red shade would be a good thing to try. They make your hair feel nicely conditioned too and won't do any damage at all. They can take longer to wash out of bleached hair, but should wash out fairly quickly with henna on your hair (although I have read that Vampire Red can be hard to wash out, but I don't know if that applies if it's used over the top of henna)
StPaulaGirl, I'd definitely try this before re-hennaing your entire head. It's very easy to go too dark and henna so often gets too brown looking (especially indoors) when it gets darker. If you do re-henna, I'd go for the cassia mix to keep it lighter (but that might make it too coppery or golden for your liking...)

I really can't help but I just wanted to say that I *love* that copper colour!
Good luck :)

I have Manic Panic Vampire Red over my henna hair and well, I am in love. It's been almost a week that I did it, and the color is as vibrant as it was at first. When I wash, the shampoo water is definitely a raspberry color, but doesn't seem to affect the color once dried. It's beautiful deep red and so vibrant, I think I'll be a Vampire Red for a long time. i do have A LOT of whites/greys and after a couple of month of growth, i'll be able to see if the Manic panic covers the roots while blending the rest of my hennaed hair. If not, when i'll henna the roots to the best I can and then manic panic over. I love the henna, but I can see how much of a pain it will be as the hair gets longer. Manic panic is really easy to apply, light on the head and conditions wonderfully. Why did I wait this long?!
I think if you do a cassia gloss with manic panic added to it ( no henna ) it will help to give you that little hint of red you are looking for. i would go with a mixture of the Vampire Red and the Pillarbox red, so you don't end up too dark or too light, since it is a gloss.
Please please post pictures when you are through, I'd love to see the results. your hair is a lovely shade right now, but I do understand the coppery intensity is NOT the red you are aiming for. for me, I didn't want to do 15 henna applications to get to that deep wine red I was aiming for. Manic Panic was the answer to my wants.

Thanks so much, everyone! I really appreciate all the advice. :flower:
I went out and bought some Manic Panic today, yay! I got Vampire Red (the last one!) and Wildfire (they didn't have Pillarbox red). I plan on applying it this weekend; I'll definitely post pictures of the results!

Let us know how it goes/went.
I also have henna over previously bleacehed hair.
Your color now is just about(if not the same) as mine. In some light it looks Phoenix red, in others it's quite coppper-orange.
When my transition lenses go dark in the sun my hair looks perfect (more true red/phoenix).
I ended up ordering manic panic vampire red to try it out, but it'll be several days. I don't want to put it on Un-diluted because vamp red is insanely intense on most people.

Let me join the vampire red club :D Just received mine in the post a couple of days ago and did a strand test. My colour at the moment is medium/dark reddish brown and it definitely made it redder! I think I need to henna or henndigo my roots first or they'll be lighter red than the rest of my hair..

I'm unable to upload photos right now (seems to be something wrong with the site), but I'll try to get them up as soon as I can. If the problem persists through tomorrow, I'll open a photobucket account. So...stay tuned I guess. :)

Okay, the results.
I mixed about 100 grams of cassia with about two tablespoons of Vampire Red and Wildfire (equal amounts of each). Applied it, then after about an hour and a half I freaked out and washed it off.
Didn't do a thing.
Soooo, since I didn't have any more cassia left, I decided to do a conditioner gloss. I mixed three parts conditioner with one part of the Vampire red/Wildflower mix and left it on my head for one hour.
Holy moly.
Apparently, my hair is one giant, ultra-absorbent sponge. It was bright and very, very red. RED red. Here's what it looked like immediately after (at night, with flash):

Same time, without flash:
http://i1266.photobucket.com/albums/jj523/stpaulagirl/Trafficlightrednoflash.jpg
...which looks pretty here but looked nothing like it at all in broad daylight. In broad daylight it was very bright. I went out with some friends the next day and while we were walking along the sidewalk a car stopped right behind us. Obviously the driver mistook my hair for a traffic light.
Soooo I did three, two-hour yogurt treatments three days in a row to tone down the color. It worked REALLY WELL! I am excited to report that the bottom of my bathtub looked like a crime scene all three days. :D
Resulting, finally, in this (taken indoors, no flash):
http://i1266.photobucket.com/albums/jj523/stpaulagirl/yemenimp.jpg
Here's a side-by-side comparison:
http://i1266.photobucket.com/albums/jj523/stpaulagirl/yemenimpbeforeafter.jpg
Yay. I got my little more red. :D It's a bit patchy in places (no doubt because of the yogurt treatments), but it's not obvious and it's not traffic light red anymore. The color seems to be holding well, too.
So thanks, everyone! :blossom:
I definitely plan on doing this again. I just need a different dye/conditioner ratio and I should be golden (not literally, though. HA).

Lovely color. I use vampire red in a different way. After I wash my hair I apply it to the orangey areas in my hair with a dye brush while my hair is wet. Not dripping wet but quite wet. Then I comb it through a lot so it doesn't look patchy and I just let it dry, I don't rinse. I apply very little of it though and it blends very well with the rest of my hair. It washes out the next time I wash my hair and I reapply if I want to, it takes a few seconds to do it and the box lasts me forever:)

I should've checked pictures before I did the same.
I mixed 2 tsp vamp red and 1tsp hi octane orange with a ton of conditioner. My hair also absorbed it like a sponge.
It's definitely "OMG" ruby/deep pink in most light. it's beautiful but way more red then I wanted. Luckily, it will fade fast.
