View Full Version : Hair glitches in movies

I was watching The Secret of Moonacre last night and there is one scene where the main character's hair goes from a fishtail braid to a english braid in and them back again through out the whole scene. Also she ends up in a lake or ocean right after that and her hair is all of a sudden loose and as soon as she gets out of the water her hair is dry and in loose curls. Has anyone else caught glitches such as this in movies that they have watched?

I remember in one scene of Dances With Wolves that the female love interest character had hair at least hip length, and in the very next scene it was only about BSL. Since she was on a horse from one scene to the next, I really don't think she had time and opportunity for a hair cut.

huh... I don't remember that happening! Nice spot!

Oh, tell me about it! What slays me is that when it comes to long hair the stylists don't have a clue when it comes to braids. The heroine may have braids around her head, but in a later scene her loose hair is no where near where it should be when it comes to length.
Also, some braids just don't "hang" as nature would dictate. And the entire head of hair and the braids are just so "picture perfect" that you KNOW its a wig. Yes I know most long hair in films is courtesy of a wig..but gee, does it have to look so phony?

Lord of the rings-fellowship of the ring, Galadriels hair changes curl/wave pattern all through the mirror scene. You can also see the weave of her wig in some bits!

I remember that. it happened all throughout the movie. I think she was wearing extentions because her hair really didnt match up!

I see stuff like this all the time.
The biggest one I find is that hair will magically change from behind the shoulders, to in front of the shoulders when there is simple dialogue.

I knew that Padme's hair change throughout the prequels, but by ROTS, her hair varied from TB to waist and to APL (?) in curls.

I've seen that movie umpteen times and I can't believe I missed this. That said, the second part isn't really a glitch. I think there's supposed to be quite a bit of magic involved (she's rescued by a unicorn and she isn't even wet after being in the ocean). It's not inconceivable that the powers that be re-styled her hair to make her look like a real 'Moon Princess' for her return.

I guess the most famous one is Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. Lots of length change. If you just watch her initial scenes with the Scarecrow, it is very noticeable!

I don't have a specific one I can think of.. but I've noticed that most actresses have extensions in their hair, that look very amateur-ish.. I always wonder "did an actual stylist do that?"

I just watched Hitchcock's "Suspicion" with Cary Grant and Joan Fontaine, and at least once her updo noticeably changed character within a scene when it shouldn't have. And I definitely had the impression that some hairpieces were involved, at least a braided headband sort of thing, but that sort of thing I don't mind at all. I particularly enjoy the bit in "Notorious" where Ingrid Bergman's character plucks at her disheveled hair the morning after a boozy party and a big chunk of her formerly-elegant updo comes off in her hand. I don't really mind hair continuity issues, I kind of enjoy spotting them actually. It's a little movie-watching bonus! I guess if they were really extreme I might find it annoyingly distracting.

My friend who was watching that movie with me and was already getting a little annoyed with me because I wouldn't shut up about the hair glitches finally looked at me in the last scene when her hair was dry and perfectly curled and said, "but you don't have a problem with the dog that turned into a lion or the unicorn!?!" my reply to that was "but her hair!"
I think I have spent a little too much time on the LHC!

Kiki's Delivery Service; her bow changes the side of her head it's on numerous times. She's animated, but still. :p

Oh yes. I distinctly remember this scene in Original Sin that has Angelina Jolie's hair a shade of black and also a much lighter brunette all in the same scene that takes place in a single room. I remember seeing it & thinking that multiple takes must have been edited together and at one point she hadn't yet had her hair darkened again.

I was vaguely reading this yesterday and couldn't think of any.
I watched a film last night called 'In Time' and there's a scene where the main lady is in the water, has soaking wet hair....runs out to go back inside, and magically has dry hair except for a slight wave in the ends.

I get frustrated by length changes. I know that most of the time they are wearing wigs or hair pieces, but you'd think they would use the same one all the time on the same actress. Long hair varies from BSL to waist to longer... all over the same film.
And don't get me started on braids! With my fine hair I don't lose much length with braids but even I lose some. Some actresses seem to go even longer when they've got a braid!

The most recent one for me was on the show Once Upon a Time, when the heroin Emma was talking to her friend on the street. They were standing about three feet apart, and the cameras kept switching back in forth. Emma has BSL hair, and it was going EVERYWHERE between switches! Behind her shoulders, in front, half in front, a few strands in front, strands gone, re-styled, etc. Drove me nuts, I don't even know what they were talking about. :p

It's fairly clear in context that the trip from Edoras to Helm's Deep is not a 1 hour horse ride. So it's pretty believable that she'd swap her hair around since she's not really inclined to do the sensible thing and stick it in an updo and leave it.
(horses move at about the same walking pace as humans, and if they're carrying a rider or any luggage, they move somewhat slower than a human carrying a comparable size load... so even a 10 mile trip would be pretty long, and a 20-30 mile retreat would be pretty brutal on the horses. and it's not like the people of rohan would be really inclined to drive their horses into the ground for the retreat...)

Why is that a glitch? If my hair is behind my shoulders and loose, often just tilting my head is enough to bring it in front of my shoulders. Loose hair moves, often quite a lot.
If it's windy, it's likely to move rather a lot *more* than movies tend to show, and it's likely to look much weirder.

I can't think of a specific example... nope. But I've noticed more than one movie where the hero has shoulder length loose hair but pulls it back into a pony and it's suddenly mid-shoulder blade. Ah, those magic pony tail holders!

Yes! In the Princess Bride, Robin Wright's hair changes length several times. I am almost willing to let it slide, though, by allowing for wave shrinkage. But I strongly suspect she got a trim at some point in the filming process.

The one that irks me the most is First Knight. In one scene Guenevere's (I know I'm spelling the name wrong- sorry:o) wearing a really pretty bun-on-braid with the braid tassel about to her thigh or even knee- hard to tell with all that skirt (which I love, btw). Later on in the movie, her loose hair is like waist or hip length. I wish I hadn't noticed this bc it has kind of ruined the movie for me. Which makes me sad. :( I'm really glad other people spot these things and I'm not totally alone.

Hehe, that's the BEST. As if they think they the audience won't notice... ::bs:
I don't know if I can remember right, but in The Phantom of the Opera, before she enters through the mirror to meet the phantom for the first time, she has natural looking make-up and hair, and then when she is going down the staircase with the phantom, she all of a sudden has full out heavy eyeliner and tighter curls!

Me and hubby watch novelas (spanish soap opras) everynight on tv... and they have major issues with this.
In this one show, Abismo de Pasion, the actress who plays the main character has blonde hair which she dyes dark brown for the character. But it seems like within the same episode her hair changes from dark brown to light brown to almost blonde ???!!!
Also, on another show, La Que No Podia Amar, the girl wears loose waves all the time... but in some scenes the tightness of her waves will change drastically. Also in another scene her hair was straight then all of a sudden it was wavy again.
These novelas come on everyday for like 4-6 months at a time, so there are a lot of errors of this type... it really annoys me especially since I watch them everyday :justy:

*deep breath* "Tangled". I expect you've seen it. Film about Rapunzel, probably the most famous long-haired lady of all time. The length of her hair changes CONSTANTLY throughout the film and it was annoying me SO MUCH!
Also, and this maybe just a styling issue, but for the first two seasons of Star Trek: Voyager, Captain Janeway was known for her "Buns of Steel" hairstyles.
This is her updo in 2x06:

However, in episode 2x07, her hair is cut into a bob:

This isn't so much of a length continuity issue, but in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Diana Troy claims to brush her beautiful ringlet curls every single night. Which is, of course, crazy. When she held a brush up to her hair I literally cried out, "Noooo!"

According to the audio commentary, she wasn't quite sure about the original hairstyle so was trying a different look. Thankfully the curls remained.

To defend my beloved janeway...I believe technology has come far enough by that time to regrow cut hair whenever someone wishes. Think of the resources being used today for beauty advancements. I think It's entirely plausible for her to get a haircut, wear it awhile, then pop back down to the ships barber and ask to have her hair back. Look! They can actually create food out of thin air! Why not hair? I actually have had numerous discussions with my dad about star trek technology. The solution for food out of thin air we both agreed upon makes anyone go Eeeew!
Tangled! I'm not the only one who noticed the length changes! How does her hair go from wrapping around and around and around her tower, to being short enough she just grabs an armfull and runs off. Not to mention that braid! Shed have to braid lots of braids, braid those braids, then braid again just to get that sort of shrinkage.

It's possible, I suppose... although think of the energy that would take. They're already rationing the replicator resources for food, let alone beauty...
... and it doesn't explain how Kate Mulgrew was able to grow two feet of hair in the space of five episodes ;)

True on the limited resources. But i think the barbershops in ship wouldn't use ships resources. I have never seen an instrument or tool get recharged. Plus, look at 7of9. She came to the ahip a baldheaded Borg, yet the Doctor was able to regrow her hair for aesthetic reasons. I think that tools they hold in their hands contain some sort of unlimited power source that wouldn't be compatible with ships power. Or maybe, they picked up a hair growing super vitamin something or other on a planet. Who knows?
I love that I've found someone I can debate star trek technology with :)

In Shanghai Noon, Jackie Chan's extensions are painfully obvious at certain points.
ETA: So yes, hair glitches not only attract my attention, but can ruin a movie for me. If it is a period piece and the hairstyles are wrong for the time period, or if the actress has a shorter length when worn down but very elaborate updo's that require more hair that what she has, it does bug me. I know that they use false hair in movies, I just wish that they were not so obvious about it!

Like the first picture there you can see how her hair is wrapped around her pony tail. But, even with her hair up I think it would still only be Mbl not waist.
