I recently found a thread in another forum about these Indian hair accessories and I fell in love! :D

For those who don't know what this is:

"Parandi is a long bunch of threads with elaborate decorative tassels at the lower end, and are used by Punjabi women to braid their long hair" Source (http://www.bombayfashions.com/default.php?cPath=6452)

You can buy them online, but you can easily make them yourself.

These are the Parandi I've made:

http://img809.imageshack.us/img809/5858/parandabersicht.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/809/parandabersicht.jpg/)
I prefer mine without tassels, because I use them for my braided buns.

http://img853.imageshack.us/img853/6969/paranda.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/853/paranda.jpg/)
http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/7913/paranda2.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/267/paranda2.jpg/)

Pros:

- braids look fuller and longer
- braided buns look huge!
- you don't need elastics
- because of the longer and thicker braid, braided buns are more stable and center hold buns are likely to hold without pins!
- your ends aren't exposed
- you will get braiding waves to the very end of your hair!
- you can choose colors similar to your hair to have natural looking "hair extension"
- or you can use contrasting colors or colors that match your clothes

This is how it looks down: http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/7053/parandazopf.jpg

Because this post is already very picture heavy, you can find the instruction on my website (https://sites.google.com/site/habioku/home/do-it-yourself). Hope this is helpful and sorry for any mistakes (I'm not a native speaker :o)

I would love to see your Parandi pictures! :D

I made one :D Although, I think got my measurements wrong, as my wool tail part is only a little stub (about 2-3" after hair runs out). Ah well time to make another!!
Made my braid HUGE!! And the extra length I did, get helps me keep braid in a bun :)
Oh, also with my hair being fine and slippy, my bun has not moved, its so solid, this sucker aint gunna move :D

Thank you Habioku, for your instructions :blossom:

Those look really lovely. I especially love the multi-tonal green one with your hair colour. I know what I'm spending the afternoon doing now. Thanks. :)

It looks to be much more protective of the ends than an elastic (or ribbon) and exposed braid tassel. Also, I imagine hair toys are easier to slip between the threads of these than with similar braided buns with scarves.

Well, given how thin my hair has gotten and how much yarn is in my house... I need to make these!! I can't quite figure out that knot... if anyone comes up with a "dummies" tutorial for it let me know...

April 4th, 2012, 02:35 AM
Thanks for your interest! :D

@Grillz: Yes, it may help to keep the layers in!

@whiteDove: I would love to see yours! I noticed the same effect, my bun holds better in place and also have a nicer shape as without the Parandi :)

@Spoonshine: Yes I thought the same! I just need my Parandi and my stick to do a braided bun (center hold). No elastics or hair pins needed. I think that's a lot more hair friendly as my normal braided bun where I need both.

@punkcatknitter: I try to explain it: When you have your bundles of yarn for each strand of the Prarandi you fold each strand in the middle, i.e. you get 3 strands with loops at their ends. Now you insert the loop of strand 2 through the loop of strand 1. Take strand 3 and insert the loop through the loop of strand 2. Now it have to look like the low left image of the instruction. To close the "circle", take the ends of strand 1 and insert it through the loop of the strand 3 (middle image). If you now pull on each end, you get a knot. Hope this helps ;).

@Dreadfulwoman: Yes, that's a nice side effect! :)

@Freckled.Thing: I think you hair length should work. The Parandi makes my bun even more stable. So give it a try! :)

@LadyKate: I tried several types of yarn, it's just a matter of preference. I used merino wool as well as thinner wool for knitting socks. I just adjust the amount of threads to have about the same over all thickness.

Here is the one I made last night. I used a variety of silk blend yarns.

What a great idea - I've been looking for protective styles for my very slippery fine hair, and this is a great and stylish way to put the hair up. I love how it means you don't even need an elastic at the end of your braid. I have some fine sock wool at home I can try with, and I'll be on the lookout for more yarn with pretty colours.

How do you store your Parandi?

How do you store your Parandi?

I've not made any yet, but i thought for storage maybe looping over a wire coat hanger or plaiting/braiding them

Really love the pop of colour they give your hair, especially the green one. I've seen these kinds of things before, good to know what they're called! If their not too hard to make, I'd like to make some of my own. My hair still can't be braided so I'll have to wait a bit, but this is yet another great incentive to grow one's hair long!

OK, I was so inspired last night that I had to make one, with the only ball of yarn (acrylic) I had in the house. I used the same tabletop method as habioku, and made 15 loops. Which means that, with the splitting into three then folding over, each of the Paranda "bunches" has 10 strings.

I found it slightly awkward to start the braid, and I probably should have been used the Paranda strands to control the layers at the bottom, but it will come (hopefully!). I'm well chuffed that the leftover tassel makes my braid look classic length! ;)

I wonder if satin ribbon would work as well?

At my second job, I have access to wool, and embroidery thread, and ribbons of all shapes and sizes.....I can't wait for the holidays to be over so I can go back to work to look at what we have!!!!

I made one of yarn, but had trouble when I started to braid it in my hair. Can anyone give me the secret of getting it started?

It was hard to get mine started and it took multiple attempts. What helped me was pinning the top of the paranda to my scalp hairs underneath the braid using a bobby pin (the bobby pin can be removed afterwards).

I kept grabbing my hair & not the yarn in the middle back. Also the braid came out too low I think.
What is your secret of getting it started???

I draped the paranda just like the OP explained, with the knot behind my shoulders.. and all I do is tilt my head over my desk chair (along with the ribbon at my back). I section the hair in three like normal and braid as normal. Because my head is tilted back gravity is pushing all my hair into a compact shape. I make sure to braid the first two sections tight enough.

wow, Wow, WOW!!! I'm in love with these! I can't thank you enough, habioku, for sharing this creation- I finally actually WANT to wear my hair up!! :happydance:

Here's a picture with a brown Paranda in with the braid down: (I'm not the best at braiding behind my head, as you can see!)
http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x322/hburgy/DSCN1373640x480.jpg

I was really fortunate to find yarn that matched my hair color so closely! You can hardly tell that it's yarn unless you look up close! So here's the bun:
http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x322/hburgy/DSCN1363640x480.jpg http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x322/hburgy/DSCN1361640x480.jpg http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x322/hburgy/DSCN1366640x480.jpg

I couldn't stop after I had such success with the first one, so I made another multicolored one. Here it is with the braid down:
http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x322/hburgy/DSCN1381640x480.jpg

And then the bun:
http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x322/hburgy/DSCN1400640x480.jpg http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x322/hburgy/DSCN1396640x480.jpg http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x322/hburgy/DSCN1391640x480.jpg

I am so thrilled with the way they turned out! My hair is just shy of waist and it's really thinning at the ends, and these things make my bun look HUGE! And they're so cute, too!

I'll share a couple tips I learned from making mine for those interested. I started cutting each bundle of yarn at about 50" long, and that turned out to be way to short for me (I'm 5'4" with a long torso). Even though my ponytail only measured 16", I ended up cutting strands that were 75" long the second go-around. I cut enough strands for each bundle of 3 to be about as thick in diameter as my thumb. I then started the braid by just putting my hair in a high ponytail at the crown, diving it into three, and then braiding in the Paranda from there.

I can feel a new obsession coming on... I'm off to make a red one now!! :knit:
Thanks again!!

It's red-russet-yellow-brown.

Hmmm... my kitchen table might just be long enough for me to make a Paranda that would be my goal length :)

I had no idea this thing had a name. I was wearing my hair like this (in longer "fake" braids) practically all summer last year. I thought it was my invention. Bceause my length hasn't really been enough for a "regular" braid, until recently so I helped myself out. (blush) (blush) ;)

I just made my first one today and have it in my hair now. It's a red-purple one and looks pretty cool. I like the fact of not having to use a hair elastic with braids so I'll be sure to make more and will post pictures once I get around to it!

I am in love with these! Last weekend i did my sister's hair with one. Her hair is waist length, but every thin. 1" circumferance is a generous estimate. She loved it because it made her feel like she actually had thicknes. Plus, there were no elastics involved. She is super careful with her hair. I'm in love with the huge buns i can get. I actually am wanting to do a crazy-super thick one.

I have dry hair and live in a very dry environment, so I was concerned about this, too. The first couple times I tried the style I wet my ends first with a mister bottle, then oiled them (I use sesame oil because it works well for my hair) and then braided the Paranda in from there. After wearing it up this way for an entire day for a few days in a row now, my ends do not seem dried out at all! I suppose if the oil starts to build up in the Paranda over time, I will probably just toss it and make a new one. They are super easy and cheap to make. HTH!! :flower:

Eek! I just saw this thread today and I am flipping out.

Ok, I have not had time to read the whole thread yet but read the first like 60 posts (quickly). I apologize in advance if these questions have already been asked. DANG I hate living so far away from civilization when I find a hair thing I want! I have yarn, but only the cheap kind and no colors I would wear. I am thinking I need the craft kind, more like cotton but I think your instrux indicated you use wool.

Is wool yarn the best?

Does it add a lot of weight to your bun (pull...I am thinking headaches)?

Has anyone tried this on blonde hair? ETA: I trid googling "parandi blonde hair" and got nothing.

I do my 3 strand braid with 4 strands. Two of them become one of the 3 strands (gee, this is hard to explain), it keeps my braids from pulling, which they always seem to pull on one side or another until I learned this method (somewhere here on TLHC at least a year ago). Anyway, trying to imagine how to do this with this thing.

I just have to say...I have never heard of this before and I LOVE learning hair culture from other ethnic groups!

I made one with cotton embroidery thread, and it worked ok, but it was hard to see until the end of the braid since it was kind of thin. I start my braids the same way you do, with 4 strands and I was never able to braid it into a single braid. Then, I divided my hair into pigtails and was able to braid it in that way.

Next time I try, I am thinking of starting my braid like normal, and braid without the Paranda until I bring the braid to the front. My thinking was it might be easier to braid in if I could see what I was doing.

WaitingSoLong, I also have blonde hair, and I made one to match, and several in crazy colors! I have been French braiding mine in, for me it's working better than an English braid. Yarn isn't very heavy, so I haven't had a problem with the weight pulling on my head. I used a regular worsted weight acrylic yarn (just the cheap kind) and I love them! I'm making more tonight, and my friend's little nieces now have to have them too! They saw mine today and begged for their own. (They're 3 and 5.)

I have parandi of different kinds of yarn and wool. They all work fine, but I love the look of merino wool :).

It definitely add weight your braid or bun, like longer and thicker hair would ;).

Mai Gloeckchen showed her Parandi in her blond hair: clicky-clicky (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showpost.php?p=2072438&postcount=64)

If you start with 4 strands, just add the Parandi after combining the two.

My friend Sadia showed me how to put Paranda in my hair and she wrote this for me to post back in 2008. They are great directions and work well. (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showpost.php?p=171185&postcount=27)

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i175/Gladtobemom/Hair%20Toys/paranda.jpg

I'll simplify them. You need Parnda, Comb, small elastic (I use a small Blacks silicone elastic), and something to hold the two side pieces for a couple of minutes. .

One person method.

Make a Y shaped part to separate hair for braiding. Clip the two sides with big clamps just to keep them out of the way.
Place the center ribbon of the paranda so that the junction is just above where you want the braid to start.
Use the elastic to anchor that center ribbon to the hair and then pull down on the center ribbon so the junction goes down into the elastic. Another method is to anchor it temporarily with a bobby pin or two (this is good if you don't intend to let the braid hang down).
Cross the side hair pieces over top of the elastic bump.
Add the side ribbons to the side hair.
Braid neatly and don't pull too tight, the ribbon can make your braid wonky.
When you get near the end of your hair you can make a short hangman's knot or slip knot of the paranda to anchor the braid. Alternatively, if it's for a bun, just tie a bow of the paranda and let the tassels hang at the side of the bun (pretty for dress up).

BTW, ripped fabric makes a really pretty paranda. The ripped edges are interesting.

This is a good place (http://www.786shop.com/dresses/paranda.asp) to buy traditional paranda. I've ordered some things from them, but not in the last year or two.

So has anyone tried oiling them? I have cotton yarn I may try. I just don't like the feel/look of the cheap (acrylic?) yarn. I do have some nice textured pink yarn but I never wear pink.

Thanks for the blonde pics! I will post some, too, if I ever get one made.

PICTURES! Ok,they are huge. I reduced them but they are still large sorry.

Anyway, my ponytail measured 30" and I figured I wanted a Classic length tail so I added some inches to the parandi also to account for the knot, etc. Anyway, my strands were about 80" long (approx. 40" after they were doubled) and the whole thing now measures 40" (102 cm), which, btw, is exactly my hair length measurement by way of TLHC measuring. My hair is about 2" short of Classic loose and braided normally it just touches the top of my tailbone. Anyway, it worked quite nicely for the length (pic below). I don't like the feel/look of acrylic yarn so I used the only 100% cotton yarn I had which was a multicolored spool and it turned out to be just right, it matches many of my shirts! It has blue to pink and a blend in between. Apparently the spectrum of colors encompasses 80" because all the colors ended up grouped in the finished product. I used 3 strands per group (9 strands total), so double that for the finished product. (pic below)

I sported the thing all day yesterday and found
1: I needed to moisten my braid with something (I use aloe water) to avoid the spiky look from hairs sticking out, but once I did it stayed "tame" the whole day.
2: I did better starting with the knot ABOVE my braid than below like the instructions say. I just do what works! You could not see the knot after the braid was complete. It may have something to do with the fact I start with 4 strands.
3: I just tied a knot in the bottom of the parandi to keep it in place
4: I did indeed get nice braid waves (I slept with it in, too, last night) that went to the very ends (pic below)
5: I am not sure why but the added length, maybe, kept my braid from swining around in front of me and getting in my way. I forgot I even had my hair in a braid until I sat down, it never got in my way. Apparently, a Classic length braid is a magic length on me? Or it may have had something to do with the texture of the braid with the parandi in it that allowed it to cling to my back better so as to not swing around. Anyway, the braid never fuzzed out like my braids usually do.
6: Just one day and my hair now feels short compared to the fake length the parandi gave me. LOL
7: I put it in a braided bun (pic below) before removing it but I did not like the feel of it. It pulled somewhat and was uncomfortable.
8: It did not make a huge difference in my braid thickness but my parandi is not very thick.

How did I miss this thread?!

There are places where you can get just the wool and add tassels on to them if you want. There is a pic here (http://www.india-store.de/product_info.php?info=p11166_Indian-Paranda--Artificial-Plait--made-of-Cotton-Thread---in-Various-Colors.html&XTCsid=0215244751977ff8b9144c2d8dcb2eb2)

I've got some pics of my traditional parandas in my hair album and I took some to the Bath meet where we had a paranda line up. There are pics in the Bath meet report thread. I also posted a link to a documentary about them there.

Love all the ones that everyone has made. Parandas are really one of the best and cheapest hair toys around.

WaitingSoLong: That looks gorgeous! (and so many others here with nice yarn-braids. :) )
I have made the same experience: wear it one day and your hair feels short (and thin...) the next day.
I have made another one, a golden one:

I have still problems to hide the knot and my babyhairs are really fuzzy... nevertheless I really like that look.

And the braidwaves are really fantastic.

That picture was taken after I slept with my paranda, the hair was oiled in the braid. So yes, it works out very well, parandi-hairstyles and oiling.

Mai, that looks really good! At first glance I would think it was your real hair! You can hardly tell where your hair ends and the parandi finishes. The thickness in mine changes drastically once my hair ends, which my hair ends just at the knot, if you can see it, at the bottom there, though it looks like it ends sooner because of the hair/yarn ratio being so different the last 6" or so, which is the thinnest part of my hair.

I want to make a black one once I find more cotton or wool yarn. I looked yesterday with no luck. I think I will make it a bit thicker...the braid waves will be looser/softer the thicker it is. I love braid waves.

It's a little too fancy for everyday use because of the mirror tassles but I am sure to make my own simpler ones as soon as I get my hands on some yarn.

So you clip each section at the top, braid down and then release them?

I clip them together with my hair yes except for the middle strand, start the Dutch braid and as soon as I have done "under", "under" once I remove the clips.

Unfortunately so many ends are sticking out, I won't upload a pic yet. It looked better in the summer when it was done by a friend ;)

I start with mine on the top, instead of underneath. It stays up better that way.

I got a compliment on my paranda today in the store!

i clip mine into the top of the braid too and then remove the slide when i finish. I only tend to braid my hair at night and as a result im not the neatest with it, strands are always changing section and what not. Because of this i really had to concentrate to keep each parandi section in a section of plait (i.e. i would end up with 2/3rds parandi in one hair section!) - the result will probably be to force me to become neater at dutch (i still find it difficult to switch direction in my brain after having always done french braids before). looking forward to having it neat enough to wear out in the daytime

I want to play! Needs some work, but works excellently for my braided bun! :) It's weird to have an almost hip length braid too... the bottom doesn't look too good, that's when my hairs started poking out. I think I might need a bit more yarn. HMM.

I love this! I tried making one but I think it's a bit short, I don't get that ring of just plaited wool around the bun, which I really like the look of. But when I wound it into a bun I didn't need to fix it with anything it just stayed there! I think the extra friction from the wool held it together.

Does anyone else have trouble with losing the wool in amongst the hair? I mean it gets engulfed by the the hair in each strand of the braid so you don't get to see the colours along the length of the plait. How do you keep it visible? I made the clumps of wool pretty thick but it still seems to get lost!

Wore my first one today. I did a bright red to match our team shirts for ds's event today, and wore it bunned with a single stick (usually slips right out) all day, solid as a rock. Disappointed that I got no comments/compliments, but it is a definite success in my book. Never had to think about the hair in a long, active day. And I think it looks great, even if no one else knew what to think of it!

I saw these on EBay! But all very short it seems. How cool would it be to make one of syntheric hair (http://www.ebay.com/itm/kanekalon-synthetic-braid-hair-dreadlock-extension-fun-/230555344287?pt=US_CSA_MWA_Wigs_Extensions&hash=item35ae2b5d9f)and use these Indian tassel thingies for the ends!

Hard to find in my colour and something that's not a wig! Plus the ones that your can fold so there is a connection at the beginning like in a paranda is hard. All there are are the frizzy ones and they are short too :(

I prefer this structure of syntheric hair (http://www.etsy.com/listing/97670596/flower-tribal-fusion-plaits-tassels?ref=sr_gallery_7&ga_search_query=parandi&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_ship_to=ZZ&ga_min=0&ga_max=0&ga_search_type=handmade&ga_facet=handmadeparandi)

It is quite short. It's only about an inch longer than my hair when curly, must be shorter than my hair if it was straight.

I found this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-eKEmzzbsg) in which a woman braids a regular paranda into her hair as well as extensions just like a paranda. I wonder where she got it? I think it's just what you're looking for.

I love your glasses! I also like your paranda, I am a fan of the multi-clored ones like I made and I plan to get more yarn Tuesday. I am hoping to find a black/gray/white mix.

the major thing I like about these it that if you have the threads long enough your ends aren't ends any more :) any damage control sounds good to me!

This is the thing with these for me. They HAVE to be good for hair health, right? And I think I mentioned this before but my braids don't fuzz out with the parandi like they do without.

I think the extra friction from the wool held it together.

Does anyone else have trouble with losing the wool in amongst the hair? I mean it gets engulfed by the the hair in each strand of the braid so you don't get to see the colours along the length of the plait. How do you keep it visible?

Friction is usually bad for hair, so be careful there!

I have to turn the paranda strands back every cross of my braid (I reposition the yarn every turn) so it will be visible. It just takes a bit of practice.

I have gotten come lovely comments and then some bewlidered comments like "WHAT is in your hair?" or "what, are you trying to have extensions or something?" oh well.

So I used my paranda (parandi? which is plural anyway?) in a gibralter today. I just added it in with my ponytail (no braid) and twisted and wrapped as usual. It added some color and thickness to my bun. There is more than one way to use a paranda! I think I may try it in a rope braid, too. Really, it could go in ANY bun. Just pretend it is part of you length and style as usual.

Thank you PolarCathy! Sadly, not one person commented on mine, though dh saw it in the braid before I bunned it and said "That's cool!" and when I said I was going to bun it, he said I should leave it down, but I knew it would be in the way all day, so I bunned. But dd7 wore hers just in her braid, and got alot of comments/compliments. It seems no one knows what to think about my hair, so they say nothing! But I loved it, so whatever!

I just made another one today. A real thick one with brown to match my hair color and then lime green as accent. I feel like a little forest creature with a huge thick braid now and if it weren't so wet outside, I'd probably go run out in the forest and hide under rocks or so. :D

Also tried to bun my paranda for the first time and well yes, with a huge braid it will make a huge bun, but it only goes round once and since I made the paranda only half an inch longer than my actual hair, it doesn't really lenghten my braid.

UpNorth, that looks so pretty! The recent pictures in here actually made me brave the rain to go back into town to buy at yarn today. Once I'd finally decided what to get an employee came up to me and said, "We have knitting patterns if you're interested, but that yarn might not be suitable for much beyond a scarf." I ended up explaining that I didn't intend to knit anything, I was just going to make something to braid my hair with. *g*

Wow, some great looks in here! :D I tried to use the instructions, but it just looked a little off, so no pictures. Need to try a few more times. So instead I just put my hair in a pony, tucked the parandi knot into the elastic, and voila!

http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff111/mia_aka_miasen/IMG_2626-Kopi.jpg

Bunned it looked like this:

I wore it down at DBF's last night, and his sisters cat just LOVED the yarn tassle. Chewing, batting and generally having a blast with it. ;)

I tried to do one the other day... making the paranda knot was easier than I thought, but putting it in my hair was another matter - I had to give up since my arms ached so much. :( I think I need to get someone to help me put it in, since I have a terrible time making one single braid down my back. It makes my arms ache sickeningly to have them over my head/heart for very long, & makes my heart feel gross. Does that happen to anyone else? Even washing your hair can do it? Also I think I used way too long yarn, which made it really hard to work with when I already have such a hard time doing the single braid. I do braid my hair most nights, but I do 2 braids on the sides, so that's easy. Maybe I should practice by trying the paranda in 2 side braids, & use shorter yarn.

How many strands of yarn are people using?

Keep the pictures coming! Loving them. :cheer:

I don´t really know what your problem is but when I start braiding it in I place the knot on my neck and let the middle strands just hang loose while I hold the other two with my mouth as I section my hair. I then hold one section of hair with my right hand and then carefully take the right paranda strand from my mouth and repeat on the left side. Then I just start braiding til I reach the point I could put it over my shoulder and continue. My arms really hurt if I hold them over my head too long. :)

yeah, This far I have used about 30 strands (60 when folded) 10 in each (again 20 when folded) but I seem to need more actually.

PolarCathy

My new one...I liked the multicolored effect so I chose a dark brown to cream combo. This one came out a bit longer. I measured the strands uneven on purpose to help make a more natural taper at the end of the braid. I managed to get this one in a bun, too.

http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp17/Poetry4me75/DSC01344a.jpg

http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp17/Poetry4me75/DSC01345a.jpg

I used twice as many strands for this one as I did the last one. It feels heavier but did not make a huge difference. I may try adding beads to one of them at the ends. Or amke another one with beads at the ends.

I cannot seem to find blonde colored cotton yarn. I would like one that blends better.

I have an action picture of my first paranda, but it is on someone else FB page. Going to see if I can snag it. I rarely get action pictures of my hair.

Tip to help with ends that stick out towards end of braid:

Twist the strands slightly with each cross over. This sort of "tucks" the ends for me and I had much less trouble with pokey hair.

Damp or oiled hair helps.

Use a non-slick material for yoru paranda. The cotton yarn I am using seems to help grip the hair. Plus it never fuzzes out like acrylic yarn does. And it seems after a few uses, the paranda itself stops tangling. I am guessing this is from absorbing oil from my hair. Again, I am using 100% cotton yarn.

It's so inspiring to look at this thread! :D

I tried once with fabric instead of yarn. It does not mesh as well with the hair and I found it hard to roll it up and get it to stay. I don't have many good hair clips, or sticks so that might be why I had a hard time. But it looks really neat!

This is when it's up (held with a pencil)
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b119/Neyvaa/knot.jpg

This is after I released it (that's why it looks a bit poofy at the head)
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b119/Neyvaa/parandafabric-1.jpg

If I only figure out how to make it stay up properly, it'll probably become a style I wear often. I think I'm gonna try with yarn too! :D

I tried this and couldn't get it to work in my hair. I used 21 strands of a sock weight cotton yarn that I had left over from another project. My hair's a little above BSL, thick and layered, and I ended up with a lot of hairs poking out. When I tried to bun it it was really lopsided and uncomfortable.

Should I add more yarn to the paranda? Or do I just need to let my hair grow more?

I'm at MBL and I find it too short for parandas. I do it anyway but I think it will look better when longer, esp. those ends (which is why I used scarves in the first place, to wrap the ends in it)

Sad times. I was rather hoping when I saw this that it'd be something I could do in my hair because, much as I love the layers when my hair's down, I'm getting a bit fed up of the fact that I can't wear hairstick buns comfortably. Oh well, I'll just have to hope I get a summer growth spurt ;)

wow im amazed that there is a prandi thread.
And amazed that I am the only punjabi on this board it seems.

But back to the issue at hand, the prandi is normally black for everyday wear - so it matches with the hair color, and colorful for events like weddings.
http://1.imimg.com/data/0/8/MY-1464456/pr3_250x250.jpg
Commonly the way its done is to separate your hair into three sections, and then add the prandi in the three seperations and start braiding. Then when you get to the end, you may choose to place a matching elastic band so its not noticeable if you choose to leave it down.

Great to see you here- welcome!! - I'm not a Punjabi but am from India. I think there are one or two more Punjabis here. Well, thanks for describing exactly how it is done. I was wondering about it, since it looks bunched on the top. Then do you place the paranda above or below the hair first before braiding? I am going to get 3 parandas from my Punjabi friend in Punjab and am excited about it - probably in 3 different colors. He told me that it normally goes with salwar kameez (clothes).... :D I am just waiting for the parandas to arrive...

i've been looking at this site that someone posted:

http://www.786shop.com/dresses/paranda.asp

but their cheapest shipping is $24 USD and some change :( appears they have flat rate shipping. as far as ebay and amazon go, I just didnt see any that I loved. It's a shame none of the already made ones would match my haircolor. I guess my only option would be to make my own, but I really dont care for the look of just the yarn hanging from the end of the braid, so I'd like to have some of those gorgeous tassles as well. But they look really hard to make, and I think that by the time I buy all the crafts needed I'd be spending a lot. *sigh*

hey jotekb? what kind of strings are used to make the traditional ones? i see that people here are using yarn, but it looks like some other material for the ones i see online..... and now that you've come out of hiding and joined this thread, i think we may need to pick your brain ;)

I have this same problem, but more at my slowly-getting-more-blunt ends than where my layers are. And like PolarCathy (quoted below), oiling makes it worse. The first one I made was 15 doubled strands (making 30 total, so 10 for each braid section), and about twice the length of my ponytail. For the second one I used 21 doubled strands, giving me 14 for each braid section, and I used a thicker yarn and decreased the length a bit. My layers held better, but the massive thickness at the beginning of the braid made it pretty hard to put up. I think I like this as a protective, elastic-free style for deep oilings and sleeping, though. And I want to try fabric of some kind, just to see what happens.

Try it anyway.. for me oiling made it just worse but yesterday a tiny amount of aloe vera gel seemed to help somewhat (with the ends). By the time I got home it looked bad but it was a long day :)

I will have to try the gel trick. Oiling made mine worse, too.

The last bit of my hair is layered, and I use Kimberlily's defrizz spray before braiding in the parandi I made, and it worked pretty well for me. The recipe is http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=277.

Maybe I should try more strands, then, as I only had 7 in each section.

I had a thought last night for bunning with this. I haven't actually tried it yet, but it follows on the premise I've used for doing rose buns in the past. Basically you ponytail all your hair and divide it in two. Braid one section, coil it up from the end in a seashell shape, and secure with a stick. Braid the second section with a paranda, wrap it in the opposite direction around the first section, remove the stick and use it to secure the lot. Depending on how slippery your hair is, you might need to tie off the first braid or use some pins or a second stick to secure it all.

If you do i want to see. I can't wait to do this too.

I did end up making one, but since I'm growing out a pixie I have layers coupled with the fact that my "front" hair (a couple of inchest past chin) is a lot shorter than my "back" hair (a couple of inches past SL), my braids usually look like hedgehogs. :p It worked, though, as it were. I even managed to make a bun, but with so many ends sticking out all over the place, I don't think it's worth it.

May be hedgehog hair is the new trend. :D Thanks for the update. Maybe I'll try a brown one soon to blend in with my hair.
