I was reading about some members using a protein filler before henna. That makes me wonder just what is a PF and can you use it just for damage?
Thanks

I was wondering this, too. I know what protein filler is, but I keep reading differing opinions on how well it works. I've read from some that it works very well for getting henna to stick to damaged hair, and then I've read from others who said it's a temporary solution at best --that once the filler wears off, the henna will come off anyway. Can any experts weigh in?

I can't say for sure about the henna part, but I've used the Aphogee treatment (protein filler) before. http://www.folica.com/reviews/hair-care/hair-treatments/aphogee-treatment-for-damaged-hair-four-ounce#reviews_anchor
Basically when you hair is overly damaged from coloring, perming, or other fabulous things we do, we lose some protein and our hair becomes porous. Most noticeably hair color fades or washes out more quickly than one hopes.
Doing a protein treatment helps refill those protein gaps in your hair, giving the color something better to grasp on to. It also helps strengthen and soften.
In all honesty your mileage may vary as to how effective it is at helping you hold color, but with henna in particular, the beauty is that it holds on for dear life and never lets go - not at all like chemical colors.
I hope that at least starts to explain it :flower:

Thanks manderly! I've been getting supposedly gentle demi-perm colors every 8 weeks for the last two years, and I'm now seeing signs of damage. My hair is harder to manage and I've noticed my color fades much quicker than it used to. So, I want to try henna/hendigo, but I've heard that sometimes it won't stick to damaged hair. That's why I was thinking about a protein filler.

Well, henna is a huge commitment, and hendigo can be trying (the indigo fades while the henna remains). Let me direct you to Nightshade's great article to get you started in the right direction before you jump in. There are also plenty of threads on the subject, including the massive official one. Lots of info to take in.

Thank you! :) I had seen that article awhile ago (I've been researching this exhaustively for weeks. My brain is suffering from information overload...) but had completely forgotten about it. I've read every henna/plant dye thread on here that I can find as well. My next step is to order two types of henna, some indigo, some cassia, and some buxus (if I can find it), and just start doing strand tests.
The only problem is that I'm going to have to do strand tests right on my head. Since my chem color has been fading so fast, any shed hair I've been saving is different from what I have on my head. If I do a semi-perm color that matches my natural color, it will also fade rapidly leaving me with the same problem. Ah well!

I used heavy protein treatments before henna.
Twice a week, I loaded my hair full of Aphogee or Keracare Super Recontructrer. My hair loved those.
Now I use henna and I donīt need protein that much.

Maybe he wanted to hear other people's experiences :D

My experience with protein fillers and treatment has been very very positive. The first time I used ApHogee 2 step treatment the results were dramatic. It made my hair much smoother and shiner while eliminating a lot of frizz. My hair felt stronger too. ApHogee is a pain to do tho which is why I also love Colorful Neutral Protein Filler. I like to dilute it 1 part water to 2 parts CNPF and use it as a spray in treatment. After I spray it in freshly shampooed hair, I let it dry and then wash it out. It can't be used as a leave in at this concentration because it will make your hair really sticky. You could use it as a leave in if you dilute it enough but then you have the problem of trying to preserve the protein (which will go bad fast). I just got a large bottle of CNPF and am looking forward to adding it to SMTs.
