Rick does a lot of metal work and welding, but never anything this small before. I think he did a really good job with it :), especially for a first try. It's steel, and super smooth. I never had a "twisted" one like this before(not sure if it technicaly would be called a corkscrew shape) but I like this one and it holds very well. It is just a wee bit heavy, but as long as I don't make the bun too low it balances well enough that it's ok. The bun above had been in from early afternoon to late night when the picture was taken and was my first attempt with it.

He says he wants to experiment with other designs and other metals, which is cool with me :D

eta: having trouble with the pictures, sorry

Very nice!

I think it would be good for him to experiment with lighter weight metals if this one is a tad on the heavy side. But it is very nice looking none-the-less.

It's beautiful! My son is taking welding classes and brought home two heavy pieces that I'm not sure what to do with, he's just beginning. I think they would make good bookends or doorstops! I'll mention a hairstick, see what he says! ;)

Ooh, I really like that.

You know, if he wants to sell those things, I think he'd find a few customers here.

It looks great! I've got a similar metal stick (a replica of a medieval food pick) which is a bit heavy - I find it's best for a chinese bun in terms of weight distribution.

Gorgeous hair stick. It reminds me of a Unicorn's horn.

Your DBF sure is a sweetie to bring you such a nice gift. I love things that are hand made.

That is a very cool, and thoughtful gift! I love the way it looks!

*wonders if she can convince her DBF to take up metalworking...*

You should show him bronzejeweler screws, as an idea! I think those are gorgeous! And yeah, I definitely think he could sell some to LHCers, if he wanted to make it into a business (though maybe with some lighterweight metals).

wow, Thanks for all the great responses everyone :)

I like the unicorn horn comparison:cool: hadn't thought of that one before but I can definitely see it.

As far as the weight issue, he's going to try some other metal / methods. He's sort of learning as he goes and we've been throwing back and forth some ideas and improvements. Also, we've been discussing the possibility of hollow ones which, if it works out, should solve the weight issue nicely while leaving plenty of room for creativity.

Rick's over tonight, btw, and I showed him everyone's nice compliments. He's very flattered:D

As far as selling them, he'd probably be willing, but wants some more time to practice first. He's does other artwork and such, and is already an ebay seller, so selling hairsticks wouldn't be too different I guess. We're still coming up with ideas for designs, and he's still learning what makes a stick a "good" one (I explain as best I can, but also tell him that what's "good" depends on the individual preferences sometimes too - so if someone has an idea let me know and I can pass it along). And yes, it's great having such a sweet DBF that I can work on things together with. I'm proud of him:smooch:

P.S what about titanium hair sticks? Titanium is very light weight and extremely durable, but I am sure your dbf knows that already:D

Hi all,:waving:
I was going to post back here sooner, but I've been sick in bed most of this week(I think the flu). Thanks again for all the great compliments everyone has posted.

lora410, you mentioned titanium, I know a little bit about it's great properties, but wasn't sure how easy it would be for him to get or work with.
Had also considered aluminum, since it would be lighter - though we're not sure yet if it would work right either.

However, tlhc may have found us a source for titanium:), at least temporarily. I'll explain: I had been trying to remember a particular site I'd seen in the past so I could show it to him for inspiration - I mainly remembered lots of great metal hairsticks that I couldn't afford, lol. Just a day or two after mentioning the site in conversation, someone (sorry, don't remember who, or would give credit) posted about Argus Designs closing. That was the site I had been looking for - I mentioned it to him and he ended up placing a bid on some of their titanium rods where they were selling supplies on ebay (didn't tell him too, but thought it was sweet). Of course, I have no idea yet if he'll get them, but I figured I'd update on where we are. He's done a bit of research in the meantime on how to work with it properly too.

Other good news: earlier this week we were talking on the phone, and he says he's made me some others too now :D:cheer:. I haven't gotten to see them yet, but he's supposed to be coming over later tonight and says he'll bring them then.(I don't mean to make it sound like we don't spend time together:P, but we live somewhat far apart, and between his work schedule, my work and school schedule, and all the other little things that come up in life, it gets difficult to make plans for times other than the weekends)
I will try to get online again and post pics when I can. I hate to say it, but I may not even feel up to trying them out when he gets here :(. I want to, I've just been so sick, the most I've felt like doing with my hair is leaving it in a braid so I can rest. Guess I better try putting it up, at least for a short while - don't want to hurt his feelings;)

ps: almost forgot; chloeishere, you mentioned bronze jeweler screws - it took me a bit to find their site, but I agree, they do have some neat stuff there. I think he could handle that type of work:). I emailed him a link a day or so ago, but don't know if he's had a chance to check it out yet(no computer at home - he uses the ones at the library or mine, or other friends'). I'll try to remember to ask tonight.
