View Full Version : Growing as long as it will go! (The Terminal Goal Thread)

I'm at TBL+ and recently have been asked several times if I plan to grow it longer. I do plan to grow it to my knees, but I've been encouraged by some of my long hair fans on FB that I should grow it to the floor. That's a lot of hair! I don't know if I'm genetically able to grow it that long, anyway. I don't even know if I'll like it knee length. I think if I grow to terminal length, it would be purely out of curiosity of testing my genetics to see how long I can grow. If and when the rest of you make it to terminal, do you plan to keep it that length? Does it depend on how long terminal ends up being for you?

My hair is 3b/3c and just an inch above BSL.
I guess you can say mine is that type as well. I could never understand the different hair types at LHC. But I know that my hair is curly, and I get it chemically straightened with a relaxer every 12 weeks. Oh, ok. So, you're just an inch above BSL, huh? I'm right at BSL on my way to MBL. I was trying to set my goal of reaching WL by the end of March. I hope I make it.

Yeah, floor length is a lot of hair like you've said! I'm thinking instead of letting my hair grow to the floor just let it grow to my ankles. So, that I won't trip on it..lol I've always wanted hair to sit on, and I'm also testing out my genetics as well to see how long my hair can grow really. Like I've said once before I do know 2 people on my dad's side of the family that can grow classic length hair. Or, hair to the top of their thighs, and I'm also thinking that since I mostly take hair texture and type after my father I can also grow hair that long as well.

Yes, I plan to keep my terminal length hair for the rest of my life once I get there. Long hair is for me.

I'm growing to terminal, and then I'll cut back to a more manageable length. Somewhere between knee and TBL. I can't say where yet, because I've never had hair that long. My great grandmother had an ankle length braid until she was into her 90, and the nursing home forced her to cut it off to a pixie. My hair comes from that side of my family, so I am hoping I get her hair genes!

On me, WL will be attained by end of year .... still a long waiting time.
I used to chemically straighten my hair, and seized to do so about 2 years ago, but it has never been past WL. Now I have natural hair, that I occasionally apply henna to. I hope that treating my hair in a different way will lead to a different result.
Let's wait and see :knitfrog:

Honestly I just want my hair to drape. I just want to really feel it on my back. I don't know what my terminal is. My sister could only grow to waist but she damaged the heck out of it so I'm hoping my terminal is way longer because I want to eventually maintain an even hemline at waist. If it ever got to TBL I would be happy.

I don't think I would ever grow past ankle length even if genetics allowed. I really can't even imagine past knee on myself. I do plan to keep my hair at terminal though.

That was really horrible of the nursing home. If it was in a braid it was no problem at all. Disgusting. Poor lady.
Anyways, my hair could never grow that long - it can't even get to waist!
So good luck to anyone who manages the extreme lengths.

It was a nursing home run by nuns. Unfortunately she was in South America when my grandfather died and there was no choice except to move her to the home. My mother was the only one who could have taken care of her (and would have gladly!), but she was in the states on a resident visa. There was no way to quickly get her to the states. I was seven when she died.

I'm still going, photos aren't much to see but I'm like 2 or 3 inches past armpit. Maybe in like 3 years when it's something to see I'll put more photos here, ha ha ha.

My hair has been terminal length for the vast majority of my life (including now). I've managed to tweak terminal a bit longer a few times by changing my hair routine. I always wanted at least knee length hair, but its just not in my genetics.

Your hair is lovely. I hope mine will grow at least that long. As I fellow thinnish and fine haired girl I am curious what tweaks allowed you to grow longer?

Well, this is starting from childhood, and is mostly simple, but:
* Don't get bubble gum caught in your hair. (~4 years old)
* Try not to get tree sap in hair, either. (~4-8 years old)
* Brushing my own hair instead of having my mom brush it hurts a lot less. (~6-8 years old)
* Crap, there are lots of evil hair-eating chairs at school. Watch out for them!
* Using conditioner. (~10-12 years old)
* Combing conditioner through my hair with a wide-toothed comb in the shower. (~12-14 years old, idea probably from a magazine)
* Don't pile all your hair on top of your head when shampooing (like shampoo commercials show)! Let it hang down and loose. (~12-14 years old, idea probably from a magazine)
* Don't go to bed with loose, wet hair. (It dried tangled. The individual hairs dried bent instead of straight, so my hair was quite prone to tangling. College is when i figured this out, actually. Ouch.)
* Braiding my hair every night before going to bed. (Two braids works best for me. With one braid, the scalp hair is too loose and gets tangled. Three braids takes longer to do but has no more benefit than two braids. College, again.)
* Shampoo only on the scalp, conditioner only on the ends (elbows down). The shampoo does drip down the ends a bit, and the conditioner does get combed up to about shoulder level, so it all works out well. (Wow, i learned so much in college!)
* Don't make those night-time braids too tight! (Yup, college.)
* Wear hair up or braided instead of completely loose. (I do let it drip-dry loose, but start bunning/braiding it when it's no longer damp and wet, just cool. I have lived in dry, desert climates, so drip-dry only takes a few hours. I used to only put my hair up when doing activities, traveling, or encountering wind, but i keep it up a lot more nowadays.)
* Condition-wash-condition. (When showering, get hair damp, put conditioner in ends, pin hair up with claw clip. After doing the rest of my ablutions, let down hair, shampoo scalp, condition ends as normal.)
* A satin-weave silk sleep bonnet really does help cut down on nighttime friction. (Um, just within the past year. *blush*)
Most of these changes are minor - it took maybe 5-6 years to see a inch or so of gain from each.
My routine is fairly simple - i just use fairly standard shampoo and conditioner, and wash every other day. My hair tends to be greasy, so i don't like stretching more than that.
I'm hoping that henna will maybe give me another inch or two, but only time will tell.
When i was putting together my "hair history" album, i did determine that medication that i started taking around 2005 (lithium) did seem to shorten my terminal length by a few inches. Apparently it can make hair more brittle. I have gotten just amazingly positive psychiatric effects, however, and this completely outweighs the tiny sadness of ever-so-slightly less hair.

Hi everyone, I just wanted to check in! I'm still trucking along! Longest ends are over an inch past hip bones. It's still growing because I see new growth at my roots. I believe I am far from terminal yet. Hope to have the rest of the bulk to full hip length by June/July 2017.
Still growing to terminal (growing indefinitely for life). My hair has a big place in my spiritual/energetic health, and every time I have cut it, I have suffered a myriad of problems. I know this is the path for me, and I am relieved to have accepted it. Good to see this thread is still humming!

I hope to get to waist (my first major goal) this year. I'm already thinking of hip, lol. I really have no plans to cut or trim at all, but I guess I will just see how it looks as it gets longer.
Is there an average terminal length for most people?

You're welcome. That photo of my french braid is from my high school prom in 2011, so it's been a few years. My best friend made it for me, so all credit goes to her! All I did was put in grapeseed oil and some other kind of oil that I don't quite remember.

my grandmother and aunt both had knee length hair, so I come by this long hair obsession naturally. I don't know if knee length is my terminal length; am presently at tailbone. We'll see. I love photos of Victorian ladies with quite long hair, and Empress Sissi is one of my icons. I don't plan to trim unless there is some problem with damage, but I don't use heat and rarely shampoo, and mostly wear my hair up, so I'm hoping trims are unnecessary.

I'm aiming for terminal! I thought I'd reached it at about mid-thigh when I was in my late teens, but it turns out I was just still growing a little taller, haha. I realized it was still going when one day after I'd washed it, all of a sudden I felt a bit of wet hair hit the back of my knees while I was walking - a big shock moment! It made me really happy since knee-length was a big goal of mine. Now I've reached it, I just want to know how far I can go. It's very slow, my hair, which does make it hard to know if it's finished or not!

I'm really hoping I can get to terminal! My hair is really tapered at the ends so i'll probably cut the ends off once I get to waist length (i'm currently at BSL when my hair isn't super curly). My hair grows around 0.5in per month so hopefully it won't take too long seeing as i'm 5'2";) My hair was stuck at CBL for half a year since I cut it two years ago, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn't happen again! I really want to see how long my hair can actually get.

My plan is to get to TBL, maintain a bit to fix my ends, then to wrist length where I'll also maintain to fix ends, and then maybe try for terminal if I haven't maxed out before then. I'm just really curious to see how long it goes! As long as it's healthy and looks good...there's only one way to find out!

My great-great grandmother had floor-length hair. I was at thigh last time I got bored and cut it all off. Growth was slowing, but that was probably heavily damage related. I have much thinner hair now, but it's thickening again. I hope that I can get it really long. :) That wasn't even the Amerindian side of the family (Asiatic hair grows longer than Caucasian, on average).

Today I was showing some videos of knee length hair to my husband trying to study what he honestly thinks of really long hair. He asked shocked: " Do you want hair THAT long?!" I interpreted the reply as him not liking it but pushed a little further replying: " Well maybe I do, what do you think about it?" Him: "I think it would be so cool, I would love it. I just didn't realize you'd ever consider growing it that long! I don't mind at all!"
I felt so happy about this answer because I thought he would think it's too long. Now I have a peace of mind knowing I have his full support to go for terminal. This is really important to me because most of the people around me don't understand my long hair journey and I've been wondering if I really am a freak in their eyes. Well, now I don't care anymore. I still have some midway milestones to cover but term I'm coming for you!

Don't you just love that. Hubby said the same thing.
So here is a question for those that ar already super long (nearing/at terminal):
Do you recommend trims until a certain length (annual in my case) or would you just not trim unless obvious damage called for it?
ETA: I'm currently very layered at APL+, and plan on maintaining at waist for a blunt hemline, but I am wondering what to do past that point.

I would only trim if obvious damage, that way you don't get comfortable at a certain length and always trim there and stall the growth to terminal. Whenever I grow my hair out I literally just have to leave it alone and just check on it every couple of months to make sure every things growing evenly and the ends don;t look damaged. Mostly just check for splits once in a while through out the hair. The key is to simply forget about it and let it do it's thing.

I am really interested in finding out my terminal length! No one in my family has super long hair apart from my dad's sister and her daughter (my cousin :) ), and their's isn't at "terminal length" I don't believe, but it's pretty long! (around mid-back length, and cousin's is a bit longer– probably close to hip!) but I know they keep them trimmed.
My mom's terminal length is super short, like, barely past her shoulders... though she has never tried to maintain that length for *that* long, not even a year I don't think... and she is not very careful about her hair care, it's more of an afterthought most of the time.
I have had hair to my waist before when I was younger, but I don't think that's my terminal length either since I kept it trimmed as well. I'm very excite to see! :)

This is sad... :( But yes, it does make sense. I can understand from the care taker's perspective that it could just be way too difficult to manage the long hair.
Still, I think I would be almost depressed if it happened to me. I have had nightmares where someone cut off my hair (!) and if it happened in real life I can only imagine... :(

She was not too old to take care of it. They wouldn't even let her do it herself. She died within a year of being placed there.

Verbalizing a thought that has been brewing for some time. Out of curiosity I want to know where my hair stops growing. I might or might not keep it there once I've hit that limit, but I do want to see where it is. From the previous time I grew it long I know that hip is not the limit. I reached that point with a still trimmed and reasonably thick hemline.
So here I am. Yes, I want to see where terminal is. I'm in it for the long haul this time. Around MBL at the time of writing, so we're looking at years before I know. That in itself does not discourage, only add to the determination that this is a lesson in patience.
Up, up and away. Let the hair do its own thing (grow) while protected in an updo. Practice benign neglect. Just leave it alone and it will eventually get there. Each evening when I take it down to braid it for bed it will be ever so slightly longer, ever so slightly closer to the end goal.

I am curious how long my hair will grow. I put waist as my first major goal. But other than trimming to have a nicer hemline when I reach waist I don't necessarily plan to keep it there. But if I reach a length I really like I may maintain. I won't know til I get there. My opinion can change daily.....

I am wondering if I have reached terminal length. At tail bone length, I have so few hairs left in my fairy tale ends that it seems there is nothing left to grow. When I braid my hair the very ends are no thicker than a a thick pencil lead. But I am on the no cutting until July thread so I am not touching it. I seems to have any thickness I will have to trim at least 3 inches. Not sure I am willing to do that. Maybe I will just live with it............

I am curious really to see how long my hair can actually get...i have been knee length in the past with a blunt end due to regular trims..and my grand mother had her hair at floor length and she had blunt ends..i have inherited her hair type and color so i would like to see if i can grow it as long as her too...

Breakage, splits, and dry ends have been an issue for me for months now and I have mentioned this before on this website and tried several remedies but the after a few weeks, although my hair feels a slight bit more slippery which is good, there is breakage and splits and white dots.
This has become my many month long obstacle that is getting in the way of my "just ignore it and let it grow plan" since I am worried about the condition my hair is in.
Maybe my hair is somehow damaged from henna, ACV rinses, or baby shamoo I used to use? I don't do any of those anymore, but I might henna again only if it's worth it and honestly I am starting to think I have my moms hair where it did not react nicely to henna...it just got dry and increased in split ends. I know, it doesn't sound logical since henna strengthens hair but we got loads of splits and dry hair.
Well, I guess what I want to say is that even with this in the way I will just S&D and continue growing. I don't want to back down from my goals. I will reach terminal one day!

Oh, ok I see....on me WL will be attained by May or June....yeah, I know the feeling of a long waiting time. I enjoy chemically straightening my hair!!! Because, it's more manageable than my curly hair. Plus, I love to see how much length my curly has stretched every 2 or3 months. The longest my hair has ever been in my whole entire life was MBL but I know from my mother that I inherited butt length or thigh length hair from my dad's side of the family. Yes, we will wait and see. :)

I agree if you can grow it to ankle floor it would look super lovely. I hear you though I'm approaching classic which I think would be the limit just for practicality and my lifestyle. But the thought of knee/ankle does sound awesome and very tempting.

Hey Xan! I agree that if you could grow it to ankle or floor length is would be super lovely. I was also told by my mother a couple of months ago that I can grow either classic length or thigh length hair!!! I am going to let my hair grow as long as it can. I'm aiming for terminal length. Which is hopefully ankle length. Or, close to floor length. Do you know the country singer, "Crystal Gayle?" She has always worn her ankle length hair for all of her adult life!!! Ever since childhood she did not know that she could grow hair that long!!! I think hair that long is soooooo beautiful!!!!

My goal used to be mid thigh, but is now termial. I'm almost at BCL and not yet closing in in terminal, so hopefully my genes will allow me to grow it really long. I would love to get to ankle, but would probably not be comfortable with longer than that. I Hope that I can at least reach knee.

I know I can get to mid-thigh and so I assume I can get to knee... I've been trimming back to keep a small hemline, though. I've discovered that while I do enjoy fairytale ends, there is a limit to my tolerance of how thin those ends can be, because I spend forever wrapping them around buns and they limit my ability to wear my hair down. (My hair likes to grab everything around it.)
I think (hope!!) I'm done with stress-related sheds for the time being, so hopefully I can move forward without having to trim too much off. I'd like to know where my terminal length is. But, if getting there means I can't enjoy my hair on the way, I may reassess whether I want to persevere with discovering it.

You are so blessed to be reaching knee length right now. You are my inspiration for growing mine to knee length or even ankle length. I don't know what my terminal length is either. But I am planning on growing out my hair to my thighs or mid thighs. I had an aunt and a cousin my dad's side of the family the used to wear their hair to either TBL or to the top of their thighs, and I've always had an obsession on growing mine to those lengths as well since my childhood. My goal for this year is to reach hip length at the end of December of this year. So, I'm keeping my fingers crossed!!!

I'm like you. I also know that I can get to mid-thigh length as well!! I'm trying to grow my hair that long as well. Or, I am trying to see what is my terminal length too. But some others have been telling me that my terminal might be a lot longer than thigh length or mid-thigh length. But I have even thought about growing all the way to ankle length. But we'll wait and see how I can handle it at classic and mid-thigh length. Because, throughout my whole life I have never had extremely hair before long like down hip or beyond. The longest kind of hair I ever had was Mid Back Length almost close to Waist Length. So, I am hoping that I reach my goal someday soon!!! And, I hope you reach yours someday soon as well!!:)

I should give that a shot and see if just doing extra manipulation with my fingers during a CO wash will get rid of any stinkiness and get a cleaner scalp. I read on an archived LHC post that for CO washing to work, you need to really scrub with your fingers and rinse so much. Plus, you have to leave the conditioner on in between that for about 15-30 minutes to get a good cleansing effect. I tried that and it worked for me, but why has it not occured to me to just scrub away and treat it like shampoo? I can just dump it on my head from the start of the wash and rinse it off at the very end, easy as that. Just scrub a little more, rinse a little more, no more wasting water or waiting in the cold for 30 minutes.
Although, I remember when I consistantly CO washed in 30 minute waiting times and I hardly had any split ends ever. Almost no signs of breakage.
I suppose a bit of an update might be useful, and a hope that you've been having more success with your hair regime!
Still getting length (I'm at BCL properly now, amazingly - been a long time since I updated here, heh!) Had another "OMG my braids are so long" moment today, which is always an astonishing moment. I still alternate a wash-out conditioner with a leave-in. Have been using hair oils more often after washes. Have found an interesting pair of conditioners within the same brand that have drastically different effects on my hair for no apparent reason? Bewildering.
I use the Giovanni "Smooth as Silk" deep moisture shampoo and conditioner set to best effect for my wash-out (I have to have gluten-free products hence expensive.) I very rarely use the shampoo but keep it for things like after-swimming or my every-few-months clarify. My leave-in is Beautiful Curls Wavy-to-Curly. Hair oils are both one of the Giovanni products and one Beautiful Curls product (allergies make for strong brand loyalty.) I wash my hair about every five days.
I actually don't do very long rests on my head for myself, or scrub really hard? For myself, just working the conditioner through my hair takes a solid five minutes as is. I do a bit of a scalp scrub while doing so, and make sure to work my hands over all of my hair, mostly to the end of detangling as much as spreading the conditioner around. If I do plan to let it sit, yeah I'll do all of that work, twist it up and pin it, then finish the rest of my showering and body wash, and then rinse it out after unless of course it's the leave in. Sometimes I will add the leave-in after the rinse-out conditioner, as my hair can wind up very oily if I'm not careful about amount while detangling.
My hair is starting to get a little sticky at the ends of late, possibly due to me wearing more braids as my hair gets heavier. Still hasn't gotten bad enough for me to figure out how to self-trim though, so not-cutting-at-all remains my plan going forward. My annoying taper from my last cut is also still intact, and looking even more obvious as my braid is starting to get REALLY THICK at the top, OMG.
Ah well. Nice to see y'all. I'm still alive. College is eating me alive, but my hair looks good so that's what matters right?

My hair is just not what I want it to be right now. It's dry, splitting, breaking, tangly, hairline receding, shedding a little too much, and seems to not gain much length over a long time. I should have reached waist by now but I think my hair is breaking off too much. I think the culprit is shampoo. My hair and shampoo don't like each other :(
I guess I really have hit a dead end here and have to go back to what worked before, even if videos on youtube say that conditioner on scalp clogs follicles and causes problems on your scalp and hair. I had a better time with ny hair when Ive CO washed. Ive read people say and have been told CO washing doesn't make sense, is bad for your scalp, causes build up, and in the end is not worth it, but I did it for 2 years straight and clarified once or twice in those 2 years and had a good time....in fact, my hair had dryness trouble and more split ends around the time I clarified.
Well, I am due for a clarifying wash anyways, time to restart CO washing. Do what your hair likes, not what you would like your hair to like.
ETA: I thought about it after reading through the COwashing thread..I won't even clarify. I don't use cones so I will jump right into CO washing.
My hair is almost to waist when stretched the last time I checked. I have about a little over an inch left. I am just hoping I can make it to BCL by Chistmas as a little present for myself :)

Good luck with it! It sucks that your hair is cranky with you but obviously something you're doing isn't working out. A change definitely seems due.
Honestly my scalp is just fine with me getting conditioner on it; I hardly dump conditioner on it directly, but I don't fuss about what's on my fingers when I'm finger-combing it out. I used to have itchy scalp before I CO-washed; I suppose it's still a bit flaky, but it's not also itchy unless it's been too long since I rinsed it or I've been putting it up wrong so I dunno what those people were noticing. Possibly it just didn't suit their scalp and hair type. If my scalp is cranky that day/week, I'll just do extra finger-massaging under the showerhead before/after I CO-wash to freshen it up, or when I'm finger-combing dry.
I also only clarify with a generic shampoo not one specifically meant for 'clarifying', so maybe that might help too for the days you need one? I somewhat incidentally don't use cones (most allergy-friendy shampoos for my suite of needs are all also non-sulfate/non-cones) so...
Yeah. Best of luck!

Yay for BCL and longer braids!! :cheer:
A lot of products within the same line can have completely different effects depending on ingredients, so that's not too surprising.
I sympathize on the taper!! I've had a very drastic taper for years. The first 2-4 turns of my braid are HUGE and then it tapers steadily down to less than a pencil thickness at the ends. It makes it an adventure trying to do buns!

I've read through this entire thread, since I've been away so long, and I really think you should go back to CO washing since it worked so well for you before. The important thing to remember about ANY washing routine is that all hair is different, and one person's holy grail routine makes another person's hair fall out. You have two years of proof that CO washing worked great for you, so trust that over the opinions of people who aren't you and don't live in your skin. I've been CO washing for 6 years myself, and it's definitely the routine for me. Listen to what your hair and scalp are actually telling you, and you'll be fine. :cheese:

Checking back in. :couch:
I've been away for a long time due to steadily worsening health. It's turned out to be Lyme Disease, which is an absolute beast to recover from. I'm taking an ungodly amount of herbal antibiotics and supplements, and have finally started to see my health pause and climb slowly upwards instead of deterioriating further. But looking at other people in my same situation, I have at least a good year, maybe four years, to go until I really start feeling good (or at least capable of doing an almost normal amount of activity). And I'm looking at 10 years or so to remission.
My hair has taken a back seat because I couldn't cope with life at all. It's been living in a nautilus or English braid for days at a time, and getting washed every 9-21 days, depending on how I felt. So it isn't in the best condition at the moment, but in spite of that it's been growing.
In January I had my hubby measure, and in spite of everything my longest bits (like 3 hairs) were just over an inch from Fingertip. I was shocked! I really thought it had stopped growing and I was maaaybe at Classic. My ends are so thin and my hair was so trashed that I had him trim it back up to Classic (42" on me). I've been doing major S&D ever since, and thanks to my slight improvement in health I've been able to wash it about once a week, sometimes twice, and pay more attention to not lying on it all the time. I've even been able to oil it a time or two. The condition is slowly improving but all of the S&D is keeping me around Classic. I'm torn about maintaining at Classic until New Year's (my current plan) or just continuing on as fast as S&D will allow. I may give myself until August to decide.
Terminal is still my goal, but given how much taper I have I may be terminal at Fingertip. I'm really hoping that as my health improves I'll be able to grow further. My dream goal for years has been a foot past floor.
ETA: Three recent pictures in my album. I can't seem to add them to forum posts from my phone.

Yeah I went back to CO washing and it's only been 1 wash and my hair feels so much better. I added honey in the wash for a mini SMT and it turned out great! I used to do ACV rinses too but I would rather not try that again. 6 years of CO washing is amazing! Yeah, it sounds like we are both on the same washing method path. And thank you! My hair definitely feels longer on the sides. I think they may be getting longer than they have ever been. I used to have layers when first joined LHC, now it's just natural fairytaled hair.
Also, as a reminder to others, I have learned that if you live in a dry climate like I do and you use humectants, you're going to get your moisture from the steam and vapor in the air and the shower/wash itself. So if you keep the window open and it's dry outside or have you that air suction/conditioner thing that pulls out the moisture from the bathroom you're in, more reason for you to try on that shower cap when you are doing a conditioning or deep treatment. I felt an immediate difference in my hair from using only honey and conditioner, closing the window, and not turning on the air suction/condtioner thing. Maybe my SMT's will finally begin to "click" from now on?

Good note about humectants! I live in a very dry climate too, but if I use aloe as a leave-in it works for me as long as I mix it with conditioner. The conditioner gives the moisture the air is lacking, and keeps the aloe in a state of pulling moisture from the conditioner into my hair rather than pulling my hair's moisture out into the dry air.

The conditioner gives the moisture the air is lacking, and keeps the aloe in a state of pulling moisture from the conditioner into my hair rather than pulling my hair's moisture out into the dry air.
That's a smart idea. How often do you wash your hair? If I washed my hair more frequently, I think your little trick would work for me. I am a little hesitant right now in leaving anything marinating on my hair for a week other than baby oil.

I co-wash 3 times a week, and also use shampoo on my hair and scalp 3 times a week. Meaning that I ulternate on days with doing the shampooing first to clarify, and the next day I will co-wash with any cheap cone conditioner. My conditioner has to have cones in them. Because, I feel that the cones add more slip to my hair than with conditioners that don't have cones in them. I'm so sorry you are suffering a lot of dryness and split ends at the moment. What you probably need to do is some deep moisturizing conditioning 2 or 3 times a month. I actually deep condition my hair once or twice a week. Your hair might also need some protein treatments as well.....

I might be doing SMTs more often actually :) My hair felt dry and crunchy when I used products with large amounts of protein in them, but maybe I am due for a good ol protein treatment. Gelatin treatments sound nice.

Thanks for the kind words! :flower:
I think I may decide to trim one or two more times before I continue on down. I haven't decided on deciding, though. The stress sheds have left me with some very thin ends and (but?) my hair is already pretty thin to begin with. To lose the thin ends and have the overall taper a bit less abrupt at the end I would have to trim off maybe a foot or so (not all at once). That's around 2.5 or 3 years of growth for me, though - a long time to be hovering. Lots of weighing of pros and cons. Since I haven't made any decision I've just made a couple of bigger trims when the time felt right, and other than that I trim or S&D on a very occasional basis.
None of the women in my family have had hair as long as mine is now when I've been around to witness it. According to my dad his sisters had long hair, but he can't recall just how long it was. I have no guesses on terminal length, other than that I "should" be able to grow it long according to the family's general recollections. My guess is that I can manage to get to knee and probably beyond. No idea about getting to floor. I chuckle when I think about it, because my circumference has always been on the thinner side, even during pregnancy when I wasn't losing any hair. If I could get to floor with my thin circumference, it would be just like that side of the family - the wiry, scrappy, succeed-despite-the-odds type.

At the moment I can't really wash more than once a week, so I mostly don't use aloe at all, just a little conditioner as a leave-in. I do try to oil a day or two after a wash when I can, but that doesn't always happen. When my health is better I'll probably try to experiment with leave-ins again.

My hair doesn't like most protein either. If protein makes it feel crunchy, stick with deep treatments. Wait to use protein until your hair feels too stretchy.

Had my hubby take a length shot and measure for me tonight. I'm still at 42" (Classic) with a few hairs 1/4" past. (This is after a 2-inch trim to 42" in early January, but I've done a lot of S&D since then, and I've also had a scary amount of shedding, even for me.)
The good news is, my ends are slowly thickening (I suspect I lose most of my longest thin ends every spring, as this has happened 3 years in a row now...). They look a lot more respectable in my newest picture. I tried posting it tonight but it uploaded sideways and then wouldn't take, so I'll try again tomorrow. If all else fails it will be on my Instagram @mrsprettyontopthefirst :cheese:

I've been seeing and reading about SMTs on here. What is that? :) I bet your hair did feel dry and crunchy when you used products with large amounts of protein in them. Well, when I do my protein treatments I only use a light protein replenishing conditioner every week sitting under a hooded dryer for 15 minutes, and my hair always comes out amazingly soft and healthy! It also looks and feels healthy too. Instead of dry and crunchy. Or, brittle. Yeah, I think it's time for you to do a good old protein treatment. Yes, Gelatin treatments does sound nice.

I also don't like trimming off too much hair at a time either. I've always believed in trimming off a little a time. I also do S&D too. How often do you trim your hair during the year? I only trim once or twice a year. There are 2 women on my dad's side of the family that used to have hair as long as a little passed their butts. I had an aunt and a cousin with hair to a little passed their butts. So, I think that either classic or to thigh length is my terminal length. I've also heard that when you're pregnant you do usually lose a lot of hair but it seems in your case that you didn't....Wow!

Hey, I'm so sorry that your hair is so thin. I chemically straighten my hair ever 3 months, and when I do it thins or makes my hair finier than normal. My hair is usually thick without a relaxer in it but when I relax it....it is mostly on the fine/thick side. Instead of the just thick side. But yes, when I also think of growing my hair to the floor I chuckle too!!! :) I did hear that for some women during pregnancy you do lose a lot of hair but you're blessed in your case you did lose any at all.

My goal used to be mid thigh, but is now termial. I'm almost at BCL and not yet closing in in terminal, so hopefully my genes will allow me to grow it really long. I would love to get to ankle, but would probably not be comfortable with longer than that. I Hope that I can at least reach knee.

Thank you! Yeah, I have tried picking out the shortest hairsticks I can find but they still are a little too big sometimes. I am sure it will even out as my hair gets longer. I have a chopstick that looks nice to wear but is so long I feel ridiculous wearing it with a tiny bun.

I saw an Asian young man with loose 1a knee length hair. I'm guessing it was his terminal length because his hair ends were fairytailed. My hair type is similar to his, I'm 1 inch away from BCL, and I keep shedding my longest hair strands, so my ends are tapered, and I wondered if I could grow to fairytailed knee too? I wanted thicker hemline for so long, but I think if I leave my hair alone that is possible.

His hair was very similar to mine (type and thickness), and he was only 1 inch taller than me, so it was almost like viewing a preview of how my hair could look like if I leave it alone for 3 years (I'm hip+ now, 17 more inches to knee).
Btw, he was standing with a baby stroller, with loose knee length hair, long loose hair with a baby around!

This is like... a dream thread, but scary too! I am sooooo inspired by the lengths here, and in awe of how beautiful!!!
When I was a kid, seeing Cher provided one goal. Seeing Crystal Gayle (I think she was ankle length at the time, early 70s) gave Me a new goal. It would be years before I got a chance to really try. When I finally grew it past Classic, I had to trim off several inches because I ended up in a wheelchair (paraplegic), and My hair kept getting caught in the wheels. Early in the wheelchair days, I began My severe depression, and thought... I cannot ever have My hair very long, and I am worthless now, so... Mohawk! Mmm... purple mohawk! But, eventually My love of having long hair returned, and the growing began again. I know I was over 40" (from back of head, not measuring from crown ala LHC), quite a bit actually. Since I could not stand, I can only guesstimate somewhere between Classic and Knee? Once again, even in a high ponytail. getting caught in My wheels.
And then it all got chemically cut by an experienced stylist who made some serious errors in Nov 2014. The right-front area burned to My scalp, the rest varied in lengths from 1/2" to about 20" (where I cut it initially following the disaster). Eventually, it ended up cut to a little past chin length, and the right side... welll... it looked like a bad undercut for a bit. I am between APL and BSL now, but it needs a serious trim. And after reading this thread, I REALLY wish I could try for Terminal!!! I have two brothers, both younger. The middle one had bad recession, so he shaved it years ago. The youngest hit Terminal between APL and BSL. My Mom loves short hair, so she never even tried. Her Mother though... pure Cherokee, and she had her hair at about Knee IIRC (was years ago, very short time chatting... long story, and I have babbled too much already), but I doubt it was Terminal for her.

SO glad your back to pursuing your long hair dream! :D thats a lot of drastic setbacks, but it sounds like your hair is taking after your grandmother and will become the amazing hair you desire. There is a whole thread for monthly hairstyles ideas that i really like, and if you don't mind a high ponytail- you could begin a bun and then leave the long tail down as it passes classic. There are tricky and fun ways to eat up length and still have it down. I've enjoyed that challenge thread.

Thank you!!!! :D And your hair is just  Beautiful!!!
Dealing with length past Classic is where I begin to hit roadblocks. I am going to get there, see how I can manage with it and go for Terminal. At the absolute very least, I would only ever willingly trim back to Classic, or a little longer. I have been waiting for the gray to take over, but so far it is just small patches on the sides and in the center front since age 48. It has not increased since I hit 50, so I am doing some highlights... professionally, and VERY carefully!

Thank you :happydance: I had to give up bleach because my hair is too coarse. :violin: I get splits like crazy from bleach. If you aren't seeing trouble from it-there isn't any issue. I even saw a few platinum blond long hairs around here before, who drastically bleached, and still got classic+ with shine healthy hair. Enjoy those highlights!
There is also a seemingly 'popular' hang up at FTL+ too. When you pass that boundary, i'd suggest some small trims or microtrims so it doesn't overwhelm you. Once you pass the mid back abyss it feels like it suddenly grows super fast.

I'm currently at HL and trying to grow my way to terminal length before I have to find out exactly whose hair genes I inherited between my parents 😂 both sides of my family have thick, luxuriant hair in their youth, but my dad's side balds by their 40s and 50s, while my mum's side keeps the hair (and often colour) well into their 60s and beyond.
The caveat is that my friends and I have a standing agreement that if I ever think of growing my hair past knee-length, they are to come over and smack me, because we live in Singapore and there is no way I could manage that length.

I am a little before reaching my BS level (again), can't help but wonder if such a terminal point exists, shouldn't the hair just keep growing slowly?... I mean what if I can't grow my hair beyond the BSL which was my longest until now?! X.X

I thought course hair would do better with chemical processing? Seeing as it's usually stronger and has more cuticle layers.

Hair on the scalp and body does not keep growing endlessly. A hair follicle has a life cycle which eventually stops growing. There is no “terminal” length for hair itself. Hair follicles have a life cycle which it produces hair and then stops. Individual hair has a terminal length.
Anagen phase – This is the growing phase. Can last from 2-7 years for some 10yrs. This phase is determined genetically and can be affected by diet and health. 80% of hair in a healthy scalp are in this phase. All hair follicles has its own growing phase. Most people would like 70% of follicles with at least 5 yrs growing. Again, this is genetic.
Catagen phase – Resting phase. When the follicle comes to the end of its life it rests for 3-4 months.
Telogen phase – When the hair is loosen and is ejected from the follicle. A new cycle begins as long as the follicle is healthy.
Follicles don’t have the same life cycle. Some follicles may have a growing span of 2yrs while others have 5yrs. Take good care of your hair. Length retention is important.

me too..but my coarse is also very dry and kinked, and I'm just now learning the Curly Girl method is almost perfect for it despite its lack of actual curls. I think my hair just absorbed the dye and the bleach down to the core and cracked apart. I had the tiny white dots and breakage constantly from bleach. Dye is a little better, but i get major splits still. Glad to be trimming it all away and hoping my undamaged color will be more sturdy. Already there is much less velcro ends going on, but it might also be due to the creme i found.

Wow I'm glad you explained. I always thought that if I chose to dye and bleach my hair it would be able to handle it as its very course. But apparently thats untrue as I also have very curly and kinked hair.
I've seen some people say that medium hair strands are the best to undergo chemical processing because they're not as "stiff" as course hair but not too thin that it breaks off like fine hair.

I've seen some people say that medium hair strands are the best to undergo chemical processing because they're not as "stiff" as course hair but not too thin that it breaks off like fine hair.
That makes since. I think higher oil producing hair types have a better chance too. The dye i used said to not dye freshly washed hair. So a pre-dye oil isn't a bad idea either. I'd still recommend the crazy colors for fun, but it would be at the cost of hair health for me to do it all again.

Interesting. Yeah, if I decide to bleach and dye, I'll just do the last two inches of my ends so I don't have to deal with a long grow out period.

Oh wow!!! I would be quite sad without at least highlights.
I WISH I could go platinum blonde, but My hair is so fine, I am scared now. Thick though, lots of it! But... too scary.
I am used to being able to hop in the ocean or Gulf, and then lie out in the sun for hours, which would take My level 2/3 hair to 6/7 easily, maybe 8/9 if I give it a little bit of help (HAhHAa, Sun In anyone?). The Aqua Net days plus salt water and hours of sun would get Me golden blonde with some very light highlights. The new stylist I went to got Me sooo close to that, and she used Olaplex. So far, no extra hair damage! (fingers crossed, touch wood, etc) :D

Guess what happened on my hair growing journey. I have been CO washing and now when I go S&D, I am finding less and less splits and things to snip off! I am just waiting for the moment my hair grows a little longer so I can bun it on the top of my head at night to sleep soundly without tangling up my hair and causing friction on the ends. Having a big head eats up the length when I try to pull my hair up to the top of my head :p

Oh, ok. Yeah, I know whatcha mean on that note.....
I like to get my hair chemically straightened these days! Because, it's more manageable than my natural curly hair. My curly hair always tends to get tangles and lots of dryness. For some strange reason I find that my hair is much heathier when it's chemically straightened rather than when it natural. As you know, curly hair needs lots of moisture than straight hair. By the end of the year I'm hoping to be at Hip Length. Or, to the top of my butt.

Congrats!! Super happy it's improving!
I continue to have Moments of just - holy **** how is my hair this long. It's getting somewhat hard to measure on myself without someone to help, and I really seriously need that bath stool so I stop dripping off the edge of the bathtub when I can't stand long enough to do it.
Hope you get those last few inches soon!

Thank you so much! I tried a top bun last night and it worked fairly decently so I am ok. I wouldn't wear it out to a store though like I used to sometimes when I would get up straight from bed and slip on some shoes and hide the wispies and tada I was ready for the day (lazy days).

Count me in!
I'm very curious to see how long my hair will actually get. It's fine/thin (~2" ponytail at the widest) and tends to fairytale really easily, so I'm not sure how much longer it will go without just looking really ragged and spindly. I like the look of a U or V hemline (luckily—because I doubt I could keep a blunt hemline beyond a certain point). I'm at TBL currently, and am hoping to get at least to classic.
I've been trimming a couple inches a couple times per year, which has resulted in somewhat slow progress (my last big chop was in early 2009, to shorter than chin length, and I have been growing it out again since then). I think I'm going to stop trimming as much or as often (just S&D) and see what happens.
(PS, still getting a hang of the terms; forgive me if I've made silly mistakes in what to call things!)

Oh, I did eventually lose it. Everyone does, I think. But, I didn't have that hairfall until I tapered off breastfeeding. It was nice to have "thick" hair for a few months!
I am past classic again. Fortunately I've been in pretty good health these last few months and my hair is pretty happy. I just hennaed again recently, too.

I am sure this has been shared before, but sharing (again?) because I am incredibly confused. link to YouTube video (https://youtu.be/68To2l7wHlY). Did not want to embed, unsure if that would have been okay or not.
Dr Doris Day (dermatologist) claims that growing hair past one's waist is a (very) rare ability, governed by genetics (and nurture, I am asserting). She is part of this snippet that cites this family, and all of the girls are growing longer than waist length hair, and treating it as some sort of phenomenon to be marveled at. Meanwhile, there is a Community that has a good number who have, are, and will grow longer than waist, and we even have a thread sharing sightings of longer hair that regularly includes longer than waist length hair sightings. In My city there are tons past waist. Is this just a fluff piece with zero foundation? Or have things changed? Or... what??? I clicked on it (amidst a ton of "OMG! Watch this girl get her knee length hair get chopped off! tripe, ugh, and grrrrr) simply to see a family of girls who grew their hair really long.

Urg. Can't view the video from this country. But Dr. Doris Day is likely talking a load of old hogwash, in my opinion. I believe that most people can grow to waist and probably longer, if they are healthy and treat their hair gently.

I wonder what kind of doctor she is and how could she even make such a statement. It makes her sound very uneducated. I guess she has led a sheltered life and obviously never lived near Amish country. Or visited LHC. Very odd.
Edit: I see she works as a skin care specialist in NYC and also has a hair growth system using laser and Rogaine treatments.

Also: I used to think growing past waist was near impossible, and I think many people are told this. In the Netherlands most people with hair past waist are young, and I guess the general idea is that you can only have hair that long if you had it since you were little and hardly ever cut it, because it takes years and years to grow :3 Now I know better of course ;)

I guess so. There are several statements in the video that don't make much sense. E.g. the claim that their hair grows infinitely. How would they know that, when it is cut to knee (the mother) or less (the daughters)?

Yeah, barring the presence of known health issues I'd wager that the majority of the populace could grow their hair to tailbone or even classic without extreme effort (ie. just gentle handling, no heat, wearing protective hairstyles, etc.)
Of course it's different for everyone, but it's amazing what just not doing anything* to your hair can do for its health! :p
*I mean things like bleaching, heat styling, daily washing... not "doing nothing" like letting it grow into a mat! lol!

Thanks all! I figured it was hooey, but had to ask. The funnier thing is, a recommended video from watching that one was a fluff piece with a girl with a pixie +undercut + platinum bleach on the non-undercut portion playing town crier with her object being a girl with knee length hair. To see a girl with hair that short dramatically "reviewing" the "Rapunzel's" long hair is humorous in its own way. To read the comments? It totally played to the "How Long Is Too Long" thread on this forum. The general consensus seemed to be that somewhere from BSL to Waist Length is the longest "one should grow their hair." I know it is simply a shock piece, and the commenters are... YouTube commenters, but it still was weird to see/read. I rarely encounter people who love really long hair like I do, but to have something spoon fed to you that is so contrary... so surreal in a way.

I have to agree! My mother always thought that she couldn't grow her hair much past BSL, but then in her 50s she started wearing more protective styles and stopped trimming it and now it's almost TBL! When she tried to grow it out when she was younger, it must have just been getting too much breakage from her lifestyle and tendency to wear it loose or only in a ponytail most of the time.
I think most people would be amazed at how long their hair will actually grow if they protect it.

Hi, I totally agree with you on that note! The longest my hair has ever been in my life is MBL which is where it's at right now. Well, it's actually between MBL and WL. I chemically process my hair every 20 weeks with a relaxer to straighten my curls, and I strongly feel that once I do my relaxer this month it will stretch out to WL!!! And, it hasn't been that long never in my life!!! And, the goal I'm trying to reach is Mid-Thigh Length or Terminal.

Hi everyone :waving:
I'm keen to know how long my hair will grow. I started growing to terminal about two and a half years ago but after only six months gave up. I can't remember why. This was before I knew how to take care of my hair, though, so it wasn't healthy anyway.
This time round I'm taking much better care of it, so lets see how far I get :knit:

My entire life my hair never grew past my shoulders, just felt like thats where it genetically was meant to be. No one in my family ever really had long hair either. Till maybe 4 years ago my hair finally went past my shoulders, past my bra strap and is now almost at my waist. I want it at tailbone length but lets be honest, do we ever stop at our goal length LOL. So Truly I just want to reach my terminal length what ever that is. So im jumping on this thread. What are signs of hitting your terminal length, because my hair has really been slowing down and my ends just keep breaking. I shed a lot but i think its a hormonal problem more than anything.

Synester, what did you do differently that made your hair get longer? My sister has fine, curly, i hair and she's claiming that it never gets past shoulders. I suspect it's wrong handling and bleaching her hair that causes it to break off...

Heat styling was what made my hair stop growing at BSL. I blow dried and straightened or curled once a week and it never got any longer. Once I stopped it started gaining more length.

I started trimming more, like a lot more. And oiling my hair. i still heat style (blow dry) it often. i cant seem to give it up. i just love a good blowout. but frequent trims and oils really helped. I didnt go dye free till about 2 years ago, That also helped bump up my hair health. I stopped straightening it. I didnt do it often. But i stopped it all together. probably doesn't do much but i also take hair, skin and nail supplements. I just started to really really focus and care for my hair. I still abuse it. And it still breaks like crazy because its so baby fine. but ya just gotta work with it.

I feel like this will eventually be my goal. Every time I try to decide what my goal length is, it gets longer and longer. All these lovely people with lovely hair doesn't help! :p.
Unfortunately, I always do this yoyo-ing thing with my length. I'll grow it for a while, then get bored and cut it super short, regretting it after about 6 months.

Sometimes hair hits a growth stall, and sometimes what looks like a stall is actually the breakage of old, damaged hair. I had the latter when I was around tailbone length; I had some old damage from lots of heat styling (pre-LHC, of course :p) and the ends were in pretty rough shape. Fingers crossed for you that it's just a temporary thing! :)

I just found out DH thinks super long hair is floor and beyond.
Me: A co-worker said my hair is super long. But I don’t think it’s that long (currently almost tailbone).
DH: For me, super long is floor length. I’ve only seen a few, in hippie areas.
Me: But I don’t think my hair can grow that much. It would probably grow and grow then shed before it gets to floor length.
DH: Or break.
I calculated my hair would need 29 more inches to get to the floor, roughly 5 years of growth without trims if all goes well with 0.5 inch growth per month. But I don’t think I have the genes for that. One can dream though.

just trim your hair only when necessary...hair grows from he scalp ...hair ends are also equally important but concentrate more on scalp...have short rims when u see tat your hair is worn out at the ends...if you see tat u have split ends then have hair cut...have minute haircuts just to remove those split ends only bcz on an average hair grows only half an inch a month..if u constantly chop it off ..we always remain at the same lengths....

That’s a long long term project, but I can be a very patient person if I commit myself to a project. I’m curious about my terminal length.
I plan to micro trim (really micro, like 0.5 inch every 3 months) next year to thicken my hemline, after finishing the 2017 no-trimming challenge.

I'm planning to grow to terminal length, and I know I'm nowhere near it. In the past due to benign neglect I had attained roughly TBL. I got talked into donating it to Locks of Love several years ago. My mother and sister were always telling me that with it in a bun I looked too severe, and like a frumpy old schoolmarm. I "needed" to cut my hair to look nicer. I didn't hate BSL, but it's not for me.
October of last year I made the conscious decision at WL to grow to term and joined here. Over the past year I've been very reckless; I toned once dyed a few times, and washed the ever living heck out of it to get out the dye I ended up not liking. I'm at a shabby hip length now, micro trimming out crappy layers and last years' damage.
I can accept my hair at its current length without agonizing over it needing to be longer, but I do *want* it longer. I'm curious where terminal is for me personally. And to be blunt, as an unremarkable looking person, I would like one physical feature on me that is remarkable. The only thing I have control over in that arena is my hair. So I want remarkably long, yet healthy, hair.
Since joining here I have learnt new buns and how to use sticks and forks. So no more doorknob buns held by scrunchies. The younger girls at work who are in their early 20's and in college complement my buns and braids, and don't tell me I'm too old for long hair. So my mom's and sister's criticism is out the window and I'm going to have the hair *I* want. They think I'm weird, I acknowledge that I am weird, and they gave up nagging me to cut my hair. lol
So down the terminal road I go. I love it. I love babying my hair. I love reading through here and seeing other people's success as it encourages me to continue being patient. I don't always have much to say, but this forum has taught me so much.
Looking forward to see us all progress happily to terminal length.

I'm also growing out to terminal!! Good luck to you in this journey! It won't always be easy, but it is something that would be nice to know, plus if you love long hair, then it is totally worth it!! ^_^ :blossom: I was really worried that I had reached my terminal length at mid-thigh since it wouldn't grow past that for some years, but it must have just been a stall in growth since I am now at knee length! I gained 2" within the past few months which I am super surprised about, so I am thinking that I might have some more growing to do before reaching it. :D

This gives me some hope, for I stayed at 52 inches for about 4 months the snipped 3 inches of very thin hairs, and 3 1/2 inches have grown. I'm going to give it a few more months before i declare terminal. 52 1/2 inches for me is about 4 to 5 inches above knee (I'm tall) and the last foot is quite thin.

This gives me hope too. I've always thought that my terminal length was MBL. Because, as a kid that's how long my hair used to be. But with me talking to a family member on my dad's side of the family has told me that I can grow extremely long hair, and that was my aunt(godmother) telling me this. My often told me stories of my godmother's hair and second cousin's hair being either TBL or Classic Length when they were both in high school. But when I was born they had went through the big chop, and cut it up to their shoulders. So, I got excited. Because, I'm a love hair lover. I always knew in my heart that I could grow long hair like my godmother and cousin. Because, I mostly took genes after my dad. The only thing of my mom I have is her eyes, and the longest her hair can grow is MBL. Nobody on the side of her family never had hair pass that length.

I'm thinking of going for terminal, just because I'm so darn curious about where it is for me. My hair fairytales but I don't know what my limits are since I've had TBL+ hair before and that wasn't the end of the line. I want to take a bit of a scenic route, though, maybe get to classic or FTL and maintain to get my hemline in order and then try for terminal. We'll see! I'm taking it easy and slow but I think that's my new goal.

HOw does one know when terminal is reached? My ends are so thin it seems they are not growing, but falling out instead. I am BCL + 2" with about 100 hairs

So I thought I was stalled at knee. I have been here for years. At best I get some racers about two inches past. Today while washing I realized that I am at midcalf! And not just a couple of racers either!

I thought 'racers' were those few hairs that 'grew faster'...beyond your hemline :hmm:
I suppose in some they could be terminal ...but not for most?

yeah, for most of us the racers are just the ones racing out in the lead of the hem. in fairy tale ends of terminal, it essentially becomes the hem itself since those are the only ones making it to the end because of the constant shed rate = growth rate.

I figure if I was able to maintain almost waist length throughout all of college despite wearing it loose and dying it, my actual terminal length is probably pretty decent, if I take care of it and wait until all the damage is gone. I've finally reached my minimum length to be satisfied with, so now it's a focus on health and seeing how long it can get. It would be so cool to have a floor length braid, but I can always wear a paranda if I don't make it that far!

I think if you give your hair good care and benign neglect for, say, ten years and it doesn't get longer then you can safely say you have reached terminal.

I am a little before reaching my BS level (again), can't help but wonder if such a terminal point exists, shouldn't the hair just keep growing slowly?... I mean what if I can't grow my hair beyond the BSL which was my longest until now?! X.X
Hi, I thought that I would never get pass Mid Back Length too but I did. I am now Waist Length! I believe that there is a such thing as a terminal point. The longest my hair was as a child was MBL(Mid Back Length) but now since I've joined here at the LHC my hair has been able to grow to my waist.

Yeah, I know the feeling! :) I thought that I would never get pass mbl either but after joining here at LHC I have learned a lot of neat tips to grow my hair a lot healthier than I did many years ago from when I was younger or in high school. Now, I'm at WL!!! I'm 2 inches below mbl!!! :D And I always thought that MBL was my terminal length. Or, I always thought that was the longest my hair could ever grow but I've come to find out that I can grow much much longer hair like butt length or thigh length!!! Even though I've never had hair that long before in my whole entire life.

I know that I'm going to continue to try this to see how long my hair can grow! Butt length I know sounds like a beautiful length to be at! :D I used to set my goal at that length when I first joined here at the LHC back in 2010 but I've set a much higher or longer goal than that. I'm hoping to reach ankle length someday, and if I can't handle it there I will cut it back to thigh length.

Don't worry. I think you will in time! I didn't think that I would grow past mbl either. Because, it has always been my natural length ever since childhood or my younger years but since I've joined here at LHC I have learned a lot on how to take better care of my hair, and I have retained or gained 2 inches of growth! And, I also have a feeling that I will reach my long-term goal of growing my hair to either "Thigh Length" or "Ankle Length" someday soon.

Yes Xan let's do this together. Oh, I want ankle/floor so bad. I've always wanted it for many years. Ever since I had a church friend of mine with it. She was my inspiration for me growing my hair that long, and also my favorite country blues singer, "Crystal Gayle." And she responds with, "No, I am not going to cut it." "It's my trademark."

I wasn't sure which thread to post this particular achievement. It is not momentous or anything exciting like that. I just feel an enormous sense of achievement this morning. I bought an electric razor with attachments to cut my son's hair in his chosen style (which requires frequent updating to stay in the cut). I think and HE thinks I did a pretty darn good job. I was on the ball and decided to S&D my hair. I stayed up until 1:30 am from 9 pm working on this and I was pleasantly surprised!! I thought my benign neglect had left me with tons of splits to trim and i did not have near as many as I expected. It still took A WHILE .......but then I got my whole head done. (sigh ....I have a lot of hair) In the past I worked at it for five hours and only got a third done. I have been a little more careful when I finger comb and when I brush I noticed that instead of lots of little broken off ends I'm having whole longs hairs that are shedding. And not that many these days. I guess this stressful year is just better so I'm done shedding so much. But I don't think it was a large shed since my hair doesn't feel any less. So I guess that is enough rambling...

It's probably impossible to reach terminal with any kind of even hemline. Because each hair is on it's own growing on schedule, they will never all be the same length at once. So for any stands to be at their longest and terminal length many others will still be shorter. Which will create thinner and uneven ends.
If you stop before that happens, then your maintaining somewhere before terminal. You'll probably have to choose between the two at some point down the track.

When I first heard of her 15 years ago I think she told me in a email that her goal length was knee length, and I told her that I was letting my hair grow floor length, and then she said, "I don't think I could handle having my hair at that length!"lol But now you see, today she has let it continue to grow to the floor! :D It's now dragging the floor! :D

I've been experiencing a sort of false terminal due to breakage. I decided some months back that I didn't want to wear my hair up all the time as I had for years. Also, I play a sport requiring a helmet and I don't like the feeling of having my hair bunned at the nape, so I wear a long braid instead. It's a contact sport so the braid gets abused. I've also been wearing my hair down and in ponytails quite a bit more during regular activities, which has not helped.
I'm finding that I enjoy my hair more than I did when I was constantly putting it up. This means it probably won't make it back to fingertip anytime soon - I mean, I guess it might and I shouldn't rule it out, but it is sort of hovering around past-classic and slooowwwwllllyyyy moving down as the ends get mangled into fairytale ends, which I do like so this is not a problem at all. I S&D every couple of months, when I feel the ends are catching in the comb too much.

try a silk/protectiveMaterial made into a sleeve/tube and put it over the braid, and then drop the braid down the back of your shirt to keep it from getting snagged. I played University Quidditch and it was absolutely necessary to keep it out of the mud/tackling that way.

Yes, this seems like it might be the only viable solution. I don't think I'll be able to handle it inside my shirt, though - my jersey is form-fitting and feeling that would drive me nuts (it's a sensory thing - I remove tags from clothing for the same reason). I'm mulling over ways to design a sleeve or cover that will stay put and not be too floppy or catch on other people. My braid is very thin. It's a bit of a conundrum because "if your hair is so thin then just bun it"... but... I don't like that feeling... I'm fine with buns anywhere off my neck but the helmet makes that impossible. :crazyq:

i totally get the sensory issues. i'm the same.
i put a ponytail in, braid the tail, then another band at the bottom. there are lots of ways to satin-wrap the braid with a wide ribbon or two. Once you wrap it though, it may be considered 'weapon' or 'hazard' by refs- so thats why i always tucked it.
i found some $12 options called Wrapter hair wrap if you want the sock type premade.
if you want some help ribbon wrapping without having to braid a ribbon into the hair, i actually found [of all places] flower bouquet wrapping tutorials helpful. Just do something crazy simple that doesn't take forever and use a soft ribbon so it doesn't get too stiff. If you wanted to tuck one end in the upper band and spiral wrap, then tuck the other end in the lower band-easy!
If you hate the ribbon feel, you might could just wrap below the shirt collar.

Yes, from classic length is a long way to go, and I'm short at 5ft1". You know who had beautiful floor length hair? JJJlonghair. Have you heard of her? You can google her. She has her own website. Her hair is blonde. :D
You are right Dark 40, JJJ has beyond beautiful out of this world hair, also Heavenly Tresses has way beyond floor gorgeous hair and Gossamer, Sarah Labrynth is also close to ankle so many beautiful hair idols. Helps to keep us motivated, lets grow.:)

Yes, I also love Gossamer and Sarah Labrynth's beautiful tresses on here as well! They are hair idols. I just love how JJJ takes good care of her long tresses these days!!! And, the amazing thing is that she's over 40 years old!!! She never thought that she could handle hair that long but now she realizes that she can...lol Yes, it does keep us motivated, yes lets grows. :) I'm definitely read for this. :D

I'd like to join in here! I've never grown past waist that I can recall and waist/hip was my goal but I think I would like to see just how far I can grow.
The risk is that it will get to waist stretched, and I'll decide to have it straightened or BKT and ruin it, necessitating a big chop. It has happened before! Lucky that's far off though as I'm still at APL -ish stretched, I should be safe for another couple of years anyways. Maybe I will be less impulsive by then...

Welcome to the thread windyballoons! :) When I first joined this website back in 2010 I set my goal to hip length too but over the years I have decided to see where I can grow longer myself, and my hair is waist length right now 2 inches below MBL! I'm so excited! :D

Awesome as you can see a few of us have the long hair addiction. At first I wanted waist now as long as it will go ankle to floor just looks so awesome. Lets do this:)

I'd also like to join in! I was keeping my hair at what I thought was terminal (around waist-hip), but after gaining some knowledge my hair got to BCL (due to unevenness I've cut 4 inches off and starting again). I hope they can grow to classic :rolling:

Welcome Konfitura! When I was younger I always thought the longest my hair could grow or terminal length was MBL but now since joining LHC in 2010 I have learned a lot about how to take better care of my hair, and I have reached waist length! :D 2 inches below MBL!

I've been at 55 inches for the past 16 months. I had a big shed the last year of grad school, so it is possible I may gain some thickness in the length, but I won't be seeing any of that for the next five years at least!
It took seven years to grow from waist to knee with modest trimming to remove ends when they got too grabby.

Maybe you just hit a stall I was stuck at 45" for a long time and got to 47" then I trimmed back to 45" just to try to thicken up the ends. Hope I can get a lot longer have dreams of ankle length so amazing. Don't give up you will get there:)

Yeah, don't feel bad. I've been going through a stall myself. Being stuck at waist length since June of this year. I had to trim 1cm off because of my ends being kinda dry and brittle. But now, they are much healthier and happier, and I'm not planning doing anymore trimming until June of next year. Or, when and if ever there is a need.

Xan, I am also dreaming of my hair being ankle length too! :) Did I tell you that many years ago I had a church friend or I grew up with this girl that was a member of my church that had ankle length hair??? It was gorgeous and thick!!! She also has fast growing hair too! I remember after she graduated from high school she went through the big chop, and chopped it all off from ankle length to hip length, and then she went out of town to college for 3 months. When she got back to town her hair had grown all of the way back down to her hips again after a 3 month period!!! I was in total shock!!! :D

I can relate, my hair hasn't really grown past 52 inches before, and it took me a few years to get from 49-51 inches, so it makes me wonder if I might be near terminal. Your hair is so beautiful though and that's such a nice length I think!! :)

Yes, I always have those dreams of my hair being ankle length too, and yes they are so nice, haha. Thank you about my church friend! Yes, she had beautiful and amazing hair! And, she had it in a beautiful bright red color too! Her natural hair color is brown but at the age of 16 or 17 she started dyeing her hair red! It was gorgeous!!! After I told my mom about me seeing a girl with hair that long at our church we often wondered how much product and color she was using on her hair at that length...lol

haha yeah, I know whatcha mean on that note!!!! :D Yes, she used to color it when it used to be at that length, and she even colors it nowadays as well. I don't know how long her hair is today but I also bet when her hair used to be ankle length I bet it was a lot of upkeep too!!! And, also what about how many boxes of box dye she had to buy!!! :) Or, if she was getting it done professionally at a salon. I never knew but every week she would come to church with it being bright red swinging to her ankles, and it was also very thick and wavy too!!! When I first saw her with all of that hair I was like, "Wow, too!!!" But it's so sadly that she hasn't had hair long like that in 30 years!!! :( The last time I spoke to her on the phone she told me that length doesn't matter. She was going to maintain it at SL. :( I was really disappointed when she said that. Because, I love people that have extremely long hair not short hair.

I think I reached my terminal length. The past two years my hair did not grow much and it tapered more than usual. This past year I only grew 1/2 inch on the longest hairs. I recently trimmed to lessen the taper. I'm a little bummed that I may not reach thigh or classic. I am glad I reached as long as I did, though. It's a nice length!

Okay, after reading through this thread for weeks I have decided to try terminal this time. I hope, with the help of this community and all the remedies I'm trying I won't get a huge shed again... because every time I get that I cut short. Because it looks thicker then and the ball of shed hairs in my brush is smaller which works like a psychological trick for me and makes me worry less while shedding. So, this time I'll continue taking my prescribed biotin forever, take my iron pills, my hair vitamins, do my massages and oils... and hope and pray for the best... Let's go to terminal.

I think for some people terminal length can be before classic without it being related to a health issue. As far as I know I am healthy, as far as my blood work shows, but I do suffer from stress and anxiety, so it could be because of stressful times in the last year that maybe why my growth has stalled.
Your hair is so beautiful just as it is, but of course I hope it will grow longer for you :)

Wow. Is it real terminal, or is she just not taking care of her hair? I fear this happening to me. :( I'd be over the moon to get to just bra-strap when stretched, but my hair's never been that long so who knows if it ever will?

My best friend's terminal length is just brushing her shoulders. Her hair is really fine and fragile. She was the one who taught me about oiling your hair, she tried for a few years to grow her hair out and I think she took pretty good care of it? At the very least no heat or dye, and there are plenty of people who do that who can still manage vaguely long hair. And despite that, when I looked at her hair right before she got a pixie cut, it was full of split ends.
To me that's a reminder that the physical potential to grow long hair isn't something everyone has, and if I have it, I shouldn't squander it.

Hi Madeline :)
Your friends hair must have been at a false terminal if it was full of split ends. I’d hazard a guess that perhaps her hair was suffering from mechanical damage (some of these... rubbing on clothes/bags, weather - sun, wind, not contained at night, rough handling when washing drying brushing, etc). These were enough to cause my hair to stop gaining length at around apl. And I thought that simply not dying or using heat would be enough till I came here.
If she didn’t trim or cut for years, still had very minor splits and yet wasn’t gaining any length at all at shoulder length then I’d buy it.

I’ve probably reached terminal, but I do keep trimming the ends, so it is possible those hairs have a few more inches in them, but more than that is unlikely.

I'm tempted to try to reach terminal length. For now my hair reaches hipbone when stretched but I don't think it reaches hip length properly yet. For now my goal is to reach at least knee length. I'll see with time how long my hair can become. I hope my terminal is at least at knees.

I guess it's a bit emotionally fraught for me because we were growing our hair out at the same time. Mine got long and hers didn't, even though we tried most of the same things. She's my best friend, and I suppose my first instinct is to defensively say "It's not her fault! She did everything she could! If she said it was her terminal length, it was!"
Trying to be objective, it's not my hair so I can't speak to things like daily wear or how gently/roughly she brushed it. She didn't wear it up, for example, because it wasn't really long enough to do that without falling out. (I tried a hairstick bun on her and it fell out like 2 minutes later.) I'm not sure collarbone length was her terminal length as in "follicle grows X centimeters of hair then sheds it and a new hair starts." But it was stuck at that length for years even while she did her best, so I think it is fair to say that was the longest hair she could practically grow with the amount of effort she was willing to put into it. It all worked out in the end. Now she has a really cute pixie cut that she loves, and which suits her face better than any haircut she's had before. She has no interest it growing it out again anytime soon. I guess I would just say that if your hair really does not seem naturally inclined to growing long, that really trying to do it anyway might just be frustrating and painful in the long run. But that was just what I personally took away from watching my friend. I'm sure there are people on the LHC who did the opposite, and I'd be curious to hear their accounts.
