View Full Version : Leave in conditioner?

I've only been on the forum for a small week (but lurking for longer :p) and have already found tons of useful info here.

My hair loves you guys already and has been pampered with lots of moisture since I realized how crucial it is for its wellbeing. The latest suggestion I came across was to leave conditioner in my hair. I'm sure it's a great idea (hell, I can tell from the pictures of the people suggesting it that it must be! :D), but I'm still a bit curious as to how big a effect it has.

This leads to my question:

Do any of you have pics of your hair with and without leave in? If so, I'd love to see them to get a feel for what it can do when used correctly. Of course I can just try it and see if I can get it to work out, but it would be great to have some inspiration and/or an idea of what to expect. If nothing else, I'll get the motivation to keep on trying even if I end up with a greasy mess the first times I try and go :justy:

Oh - and did I tell you how great this place is? *smirk*

I'm using Tresemme Natural conditioner with aloe vera and avocado for my CO. It's working really well so if I dare to try out the leave in, I'll probably use that for starters.

Any feedback on that specific conditioner in general and/or suggestions for alternatives that might benefit my type of hair is also greatly appreciated :)

I have tried tons of leave ins and I keep going back to just using a small amount of whatever conditioner I used in the shower in wet hair and it always works and is never that sticky feeling, aloe vera gel also works great but i have to be much more careful with it or it turns hard and sticky. My best advice is to start with your conditioner and then maybe try some oils or aloe or if one in the store catches your eye.

Kyla: Thank you.

But honestly, if you catch me on a random Saturday I look a lot more like the one with the horrible fluorescent lighting. :cheese: I just find that it's hard to get a good picture of my curl definition with my smartphone, so I'm depending a lot on the ones taken with The Magical Camera to show my point. :D

Wow Curly Cap the curls you have going in the last pic are absolutely luscious! Sorry I have nothing to add to this post because I'm one of those weird people who doesn't like the idea of leaving in a product formulated to be rinse out.

Hon, if they made a conditioner that I could rinse out and did the same thing, I'd switch instantly, even if it were insanely expensive.

There's a bit of an art to spreading goop in your hair, and I admit that I also try to advoid getting leave-in on my scalp....I would be overjoyed to leave The Curly's Voodoo Dance behind forever. :D

Going to pop in and say that for me the main effect isn't so much visual as it is practical. With a tiny (and I mean tiny) bit of leave-in I get more slip than without, and therefore less tangling, breakage, etc. It's really a big difference - it takes several times longer to detangle if I don't use a leave-in.

The conditioner I use is Jessicurl's Aloeba, and it's wonderful. Light, and formulated to be able to be left in.

I've tried many different leave ins because my hair can really use the extra moisture, and all have been major fails. I just got some Toadstool Soaps (http://www.etsy.com/listing/53463181/sandalwood-hair-conditioner-leave-in), and it is amazing stuff. I just can't say how pleased I am to find something that works without making my hair feel coated, stiff, or dry. Comes in all kinds of great scents, too!

Omg CurlyCap your curls are stunning...very much like my three daughters! Owned that model pic of you is gorgeous.

To the OP, I can't tell you how much good leave ins have been for me and my girls. Definitely never greasy since we just use conefree conditioner. It wouldn't hurt to try it once and see how it works for you. Just a dime sized amount.

here's a thread I started awhile ago, apparently many, many use it as a leave in with good results. Some used it without good results. I thought the difference in my hair (post # 1 and 251) was AMAZING until I saw this poster's post! (Post # 209) Miraculous difference!

Oh my! You also have frizzies :agape: I've been adoring your curls on the ava and thought you just had a lot (you still do but the gap's closing in a bit :D) better hairgenes than me. Looking at that last gorgeous picture, I'm beginning to think I have a chance with this leave in-thing as well! :joy:

I typed my hair as M when signing up, but I suspect that my hair is pretty fine compared to most of the serious 3s in here. Although I suffer from serious curl envy I might have to adjust the amount of leave in to avoid putting too much weight on my hair.

How much do you guys use?

:run:

I'm SO off to try this! :cheer:

Due to length and texture I'll never be able to pull of as tigth curls as you but I'm definitely going to experiment. Maybe I should even get the GFTN and experiment with different conditioners to see if it makes a difference.

All of you: Thank you so much for your input so far. This is indeed a great forum! I'd still love to see more pics and hear more experiences but no matter what I will definitely try the leave in and post some updated pics in the thread. I might end up being a true curly anyway :cheese:

I'll go through my backup and see if I can find a frizz-pic of my hair as entertainment / payback for the lovely input so far. Brb.

I've been so annoyed with my dry mess of a hair for the last years that I don't have any pics where it isn't just slapped into a loose bun or (:pins:) straightened.

This is old - and, mind you, for the last years not a bad day at all - but still gives an idea of the frizz potential :justy:

Review will be posted when it arrives...

Well, I guess that we kind of decided that as of now my hair looks like 2b/2c, but because the straight parts pull out the curl, it may be more of a 3a. I'll have to check back in a few months after I've had straight parts trimmed off :)

This is really tempting because of your results, but the company is a major animals testers (boo!). :( So anyone interested in cruelty-free products should stay away from L'Oreal and their sub-companies (Garnier is one).

Thanks for the suggestion I might try this one. I've sent a message in to them to find out if they are cruelty-free. Usually small handmade products like this are. :)

CurlyCap...your hair is the biznizz!:agree:

I don't have any pics of my hair without a leave in....i'm afraid to do that:laugh: Even in my straight hair pics in my album i used a leave-in...my hair THRIVES on moisture...it's seriously like growing a freakin flower!

But yeah i usually use whatever conditioner i used in the shower to leave in...but i do also have an actual "leave-in" that i'll be using all Spring and summer. I use a leave in under everything....i like to use products with a little hold to them...but the leave-in stops it from being too crunchy.

I'm pretty sure the leave-in is, but there's honey in the shampoo (if your idea of cruelty-free also means vegan, that is).

I usually dont use any products at all since i really dislike crunchyness. If leaving in conditioner can mean less or no crunch, I'll be a very happy camper!

I always leave a lot of conditioner in my hair. All my pictures are with conditioner left in. If not, it would feel and look like straw. I don´t have a picture because I never do this. So I definitely recommend it to you, since you´re also a curly(:

Seems like I'm a complete curl-rookie!

The good news: I might be able to have major hair improvements just by adding a very simple procedure to my routine. I like it! :D

While I have you curlies around, would some of you mind spending a few minutes on trying to type my hair? I see (and drools over) all those lovely and very neat 3a, b and c's in here and don't think my wurls/curls can compete.

On the other hand I definitely have ringlets and S-shaped curls allover and starting at the roots. They're just not as defined as most of the curls I see around here but I'm starting to think that it might have something to do with most pictures in here being of curls with leave in conditioner and/or oil/other products.

There's a bunch of hair-shots in my album. Any thoughts, lovely ladies?

I also COwash with tresumme naturals but my leave-in is about a quarter sized dollup of Loreal Eversleek conditioner. Leave-in really helps give me more defined and clumpier curls. I might add a little gel on the ends to help the curl hold through the day. As for oils... some wash days I can do with out them since I noticed it can easily give my hair a greasy look... but I absolutely can not survive without the leave in... it's a staple!!

I would definitely try using tresumme naturals as a leave-in to start. Just use a small amount at first.. comb or finger it through and go from there.

As for a hair type I bet you would be more of a 2c/3a if you tried leave in and combined that with a little gel and scrunching. RIght now you look like a 2c.

Yes they got back to me and it is cruelty-free (hooray)! But as you said, if the shampoo has honey in it then it is not vegan (not a concern for me, but good for vegans to know). Thanks for the recommendation I am almost out of leave-in. :flower:
