Well, its about time somebody made one! There are so many wonderful methods for heat free curls out there, so share your methods and post pictures if you have them!
I will start:
These are my headband curls, you put a headband around your head in a bohemian style, then wrap small sections of hair around the headband, gathering more hair as you go. When you get to the back, start on the other side, make sure to tuck the backs in and sleep on it. I find it stays in best if I sleep in a sleeping cap. Here are my results:

Caruso Rollers, see UltraBella for the posterchild of the caruso rollers done well.
You steam the rollers in a machine and then you roll a section of your hair in the roller. Each roller comes with a shield that keeps it in place. You can steam the shield before snapping it over the roller. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes to do my entire head and then about an hour to set.
I use them for large waves with a lot of body, I haven't tried them for tighter curls.

My favorite is sock curls... rag curls done with socks. As my hair has gotten longer I use pantyhose instead of my husband's dress socks to get a tighter curls since the length pulls them straight faster now. I do a combination of pin curls on top with two sock curls on the bottom. If I'm short on time I put my dry hair into a high ponytail, generously apply some mousse or volumizing spray and then put it into a fully rolled sock bun. I recently got some foam bendy rods that make spiral curls but I find they make too tight of curls for my taste. I need to practice more but these would be fantastic if my hair got longer.

Kidari... I would love more details about the sock curls. To me, pantyhose don't have any bulk or diameter to them, so how does that work? I used to do rag curls as a kid but I'm not sure how the socks would compare.

Thats great thread, finally :o. I love sock bun and cinnamon bun curls. From cinna bun i get really nice large curls with volume.

Awesome! I need some ideas. Was considering getting some foam rollers or something. Are these any good? No damage, nice curl etc? I have some large hot rollers (about 1inch thick) & they make beautiful curls but im afraid of heat now.

Also considering getting something like this:
http://www.heatcap.com/
or
http://www.minutecurls.com/

I usually wear my hair up for the day, out if I go out at night for dinner/clubs etc, but by night my hair is dry & I don't really want to re-wet it. Also I was thinking I might be able to use for things like treatments/henna too & can try different roller types or use sock curls etc.

My method of choice right now are headband curls. They are just so easy to do.

I do 6 big rag curls from the ears down before bed and have lovely loose waves all day. If I do 12 smaller rag curls, I get tight curls that end up being waves by the end of the night.

I do another version of rag curls with really long strips where I pull out a strand, lay the rag across it near the root, and do a kind-of-but-not-quite braid around the sides of the rag. It's hard to describe but they end up looking like snakeish fingery waves.

I also do a rope crown braid that gives me big, beachy supermodel hair spirals.

I think that's all I can come up with for now. I do a lot of heat-free curls.

Very pretty curls, UltraBella! May I ask, how are they heat free if there is steam involved? I have heard them mentioned a lot here on TLHC and I must say I am confused as to how they work

Here (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=81868&highlight=heat+free+curls) is another heat (and product) free curling method, although it's probably hard to sleep with and not easy to do on slippery hair.

I put curl creme in my hair and twist each curl around my finger, gives them more definition and less frizz than I'd have if I left my hair without anything in it! I then squish my hair in a t-shirt to get rid of the water and either leave it to air dry or use a hairdryer on the lowest setting (at arms length distance).

YAY!! Glad someone started this thread, as it will become my new home :)

I just posted my foam curler experiment (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=89943).

Excited to learn new techniques! At some point I'll show the difference between the sizes of the foam rollers and experiment with placement, too.

Mz Bang - I didn't get to comment on your post, but that is the best result I think I've ever seem from foam rollers. I could never get them to work!!

And the headband curl method just doesn't seem to work in my mind, but so many people use it! I'll have to try it :)

Pin curls. Easiest thing in the world and gives great curl ;-) Which, for my already curly hair, means: eliminates frizz entirely.

I have been doing Snake waves http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=82

And headband waves. Usually a combo of the two! Snake waves on the length and the shorter layer and front gets the head band.

I tried the snake waves but I think my hair is too short & fine & they just went frizzy.

The other night, I put eight of those Goody soft (pillow-like) rollers in my freshly washed damp hair. I think TorrinPaige used something like them in one of her videos.

I had them rolled up to my chin, like Torrin, and they tangled and dropped so much that I had to undo all of them after about 4 hours. I detangled and re-rolled them up as far as they would go to my scalp. I put a hairnet over them to help contain them.

When I woke up the next day, I took them out (some slight detangling was needed) and I wide tooth combed half my hair and finger separated the other half.

The combed side instantly turned into slight waves and the side I barely touched stayed curly even after wearing it in a twisted cinnabun the next day.

I should have used perm papers ( or whatever those little tissue paper squares are called!) because some of my ends were wonky and bent.

Oh well, live and learn. :)

Kidari... I would love more details about the sock curls. To me, pantyhose don't have any bulk or diameter to them, so how does that work? I used to do rag curls as a kid but I'm not sure how the socks would compare.

Sorry I just checked back now... sometimes I never check back. I use mens' dress socks the exact same way you would do a classic rag curl. I do pin curls on top, the standing up kind not the kind that are flat against your head. Here is a video on sock curls:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzJKdHglFck

here is the video that shows how I do mine pretty much every night:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8InCFpy0FQ

except instead of mens' dress socks I use thigh high pantyhose that I fold in half before rolling them up. If I were not to fold them in half it would be too thin and difficult to work with. I start half way and wrap it, tuck the ends carefully and then finish rolling up as if it were a roller. They are facing away from my face. I do two low on the head just like the heat free Kardashian hair tutorial. When you take them down, you brush out the pin curls in a way as if you were blow drying your hair. Sometimes I use a large barrel brush and brush them out or I use my Mason Pearson mixed brush and use my hand as a guide underneath the bristles to prevent frizz. Curling the two large sections on the bottom is nice because it's fast and the curls are perfect: not too tight and not too loose and all facing the same direction, giving it a very nice wave pattern that is uniform. I just put my fingers towards the roots and shake them out. Sometimes I brush them out if I want a full look. I hope this helps.

I saw these videos and ran out and bought these but I get Shirley Temple curls that are not flattering on me and are very difficult to work with and style. The upside is if you have very long hair that does not hold a curl they may be great. I just can't see how you can comfortably sleep in them. It was really difficult for me to do so.

This thread is for me I am obsessed with finding new heat free curling methods! I have found the fully rolled sock bun works well for big voluminous curls for me, but because my hair is so fine instead of covering the entire sock I just wrap it around one half of the sock, if that makes sense. I am also going to experiment with smaller socks to see if I can get some tighter curls

Next time I do it I'll take some pics of how the half sock bun looks

Next to try for me is bendy spiral rollers

Ahh for some reason can't get the pics to work, just go to my Hair album if you want to see them :o

Lately I've been doing something similar to bantu knots (sp?)
I take a section of hair, fold it in half and twist the whole thing in one direction then wrap the twist around itself into a tiny little bun and finish by pushing the bun through the 'hole' where I folded it in half.
Don't laugh too hard... here is the picture I made of this method...

I do a bunch (11) little buns in my hair when damp and secured each bun with a little barrett (do you think the barrett could break my ends off?), it is supposed to give waves but my hair was still damp in the morning so it just gave frizzy tight waves (think crimped) and i think it might have messed up my ends...worried....maybe on less damp hair in bigger sections would yield better curls? The turorial i used showed BEAUTIFUL curls with this method....

What hold products-if any-are you ladies using? My hair is coarse so it's resistant to curl. I'm a big fan of sock bun curls but after about 3 hours they go kaput on me. Can't stand hairspray and most setting products I've tried because of the "tacky" feel they leave on my hair. If anyone has any suggestions if would be GREATLY appreciated.

I put my hair in a pony at my crown, dampen the pony. Then take a bandanna (folded diagonally) and lay it on the bed, the apex facing me as I face the bed. Bend over so that the tip of my pony is at the apex, start rolling and roll all the hair together with the bandanna, keeping my head down. Once you can't roll anymore, tie the ends around. It's like you are making a rolled up bun encased in the bandanna. Then sleep on it! I love this method as its so dang fast and foolproof for me!

My hair is a little more cooperative doing curl related stuff, as I'm generally a light curlyhead anyway, so it takes to shapes pretty well. This picture was taken of lightly damp hair, rolled up with what I think are snap-on rollers (my ability to name types of rollers is no good, no good at all) done by the fiancee, and left in for a while so my hair could dry some more before taking them out.

It passed the time while we watched a movie on a great night in (thus the pajamas!).

It certainly is! I braid wave my hair on a semi-regular basis (sometimes I don't have a choice about the waves if I've been wearing a crown braid or dutch braids) but I've only properly curled my hair once, here's the picture:
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=8101&pictureid=121714

This was just ordinary rag curls on damp hair. I think my hair might've been a little too wet when I put them in because they were still a little damp when I took the rags out and the curl dropped out pretty quickly, though it did stay wavy for several days. I need to try it again!

I just ordered some foam rollers off ebay that are covered in a satin slip that you tie like rag curls, but the rollers give thickness. My only concern is that because they are satin they may not tie, but I can always pin them, long as it doesn't harm my hair!

Confession: I used my old hot rollers on the weekend. Perfect result but my hair felt dry after. So I got a similar diameter for these new rollers. hopefully I get similar results.

Also my goal is to get great marks @ uni so that I have an excuse to treat myself to trying out that heat cap :) Will let u know how it goes.

I'm personally a fan of Lottabody setting lotion for when I do pincurls---it comes in a bottle as a concentrated liquid, which you dilute with water into a spray bottle or what have you. Since you can control the setter:water ratio, you can experiment to get the perfect concentration that holds but doesn't get stiff/crunchy. You just spritz it on and then roll and let dry as you would otherwise. If I recall properly, it's alcohol free, so as far as I know it shouldn't be damaging.

My hair doesn't usually cooperate with holding curls for more than a few hours (my natural wave/curl pattern ends up strongarming the curls into submission), but with the setting lotion I can keep the curls for at least a day or more. :)

I only just got them in the mail yesterday. Haven't tried them yet, might put them in today just for the hell of it.

They aren't really satin :( kind of disappointed. They're kind of that parachute material, which is quite thick. There is wire through that is supposed to hold them in shape, not sure if it will work but we will see. The foam part was also squished in packaging & flattened so I don't think its 1inch diameter anymore. Kind of disappointing really, but we will see how they work in my hair.

Hollyfire, I've had more success with doing this method on dry hair and putting some Nightblooming panacea through my hair before putting them in buns. Also securing with those little claw clips means that there is no band lines but might make it tricky to sleep in, although sleeping in 11 buns is probably not something one would try anyway.

I get the best bunwaves with only slightly damp hair and 2 buns one each on the very top of my head, claw clips is a very good suggestion to avoid kinked ends

Havent tried the rollers yet I will try next week.

I find that my hair is so fine that doing multiple (or even 2) buns just makes frizz. One is fine though but I've only just been able to test out as my hair only just makes a bun now, & a very small one at that! But the waves are pretty.

And my hair is heavily layered after my last trim which is why it looks so short in the front even though my length is BSL.

Here is the curling method I use. I finally made a tutorial/blog post on it .
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/blog.php?b=99317

I actually tried this yesterday but I think I twisted the rollers so that it pulled my hair too tight. I sat in them for several hours and then I got to the point where I thought I might have a bad night if I attempted to sleep on them so I took them out before bed.

I was pretty happy with the results and whilst the ones around the back of my head came out pretty fast ( I think they were a touch wet still) the ones at the front of my head came out lovely and just the way I like it - and they have stayed all through today (next day) as well.

I'm still not convinced I could sleep in mine. They are the thickest ones you can buy (green) and I used 6 so I had 3 buns on either side. It made for a very cute 40's looking do by the way!

I'm going to try it again and see what is the least amount of time I need for it to dry (probably depends on the weather). My aim is to roll them in the early afternoon and take them out very late just before bed so they could be in there for around 8 hours. Might have to be a monday night thing when nothing else is going down.

I think I have a pretty unique way for creating heat-free curls, hehe :p.

When I want pretty, longlasting curls, I use plastic neon glow bracelets! Just wrap strands of (damp) hair around one or two, maybe even three bracelet (depending on how tight you want the curls to become), pin them to your head using claw clips, and leave them in for some time (2 hours is enough for me, because my hair is very curl-prone anyway). It leaves curls that stay really well, even when my hair was quite heavy and past hip. After wearing them for a whole day it just turns into wurls:

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=10100&pictureid=130158

The downpart is that you cannot sleep with those thing on your head, it feels terrible. So for a full head of curls, I only could do this when my college wasn't in the early morning. But I also use this method when I braid my hair and want the last few inches to be curly, and that way you can sleep on it.

When I wear my hair down, I just undo the single braid. Its really wavy. Nice & easy.
UltraBella, your hair is beautiful. How long is your hair? I finally got mine to hip. It finally
started growing again, after wearing it in a bun five days a week. How long do you want to
grow your hair?

Thank you :)
My hair is APL and heavily layered, I just cut it last week, it was between waist and hip.
I just have no desire to take care of that much hair anymore. I like it better now and I don't know if I will ever grow it again. It grows very fast, an inch at least per month, so I am going to need to trim it regularly to maintain my new style.

I just tried a new bun and got AWESOME waves on my 1b hair. I'm used to doing simple messy buns on my head at night to get a slight wave. More recently, I started doing a 3-strand bee-butt bun, and holy crap I finally got the beach waves I was looking for! Unfortunately it is too sunny to take a picture, I was just so excited with my results I had to post. :) I started with the cute bun all morning on 90% dry hair, and by afternoon my head was hurting so I took it down.... voila! Amazed. :D

They make for a fun thing to go out in public in just to scare people. Yes I did go out where people could see me with these things in my hair. :p

The curls: Patients is not my thing so these where only in for 40 minutes or so on damp by water and spray gel hair. And I know ya'll desperately wanted pictures of my awesome yellow shirt. Next time maybe I will wear something scandalous.

I use the "Loepsie' s" sock bun method. She has an amazing chanel on youtube.
Sadly, my hair is very slippery and curls are gone within 1 hour :(
Styling foam does not help to hold my curls neither. It weights my curls down.
And a don't like using hairsprays.
But this thread makes me want to buy some foam curlers. Maybe my curls will hold better?

Thank you for making this thread. I have been having issues with curling my thick mane this week. It just won't dry or hold a curl. I have done two rinses to remove build up from cones and minerals since I have hard water.

My hair is 1b/c-m/ii, is there anyway to hea-tless curl it with success?

My hair is slippery too and the sock bun method only works when my hair is shorter and it falls out in less than an hour when my hair is longer. I found that starting with 100% dry hair and misting it evenly to dampen it and then using any method that takes smaller sections of hair to create tighter curls lasts the longest. It's just more time consuming but worth it since the curls last longer.

I love pin curls, but I'm almost always lazy. So this is what I do instead: I take my whole hair, smooth it, and curl it up (like around a small bottle, or around your fingers once you are practiced) while damp, then pin it up with a couple small octopus clips. It makes an O-shaped bun with a hole in the middle. Makes looser curls but gets the same general smooth shape for the ends, which is what matters to me. Your hair has to be at least APL I think for it to all fit in a single bun.

Once it's dried in this shape, I put it up either in a cinnabon or again in the O-shaped bun, and finger curl a bit when I take it down, to retain the shape until my next wash. Edit: I wanted to add that a mister bottle of rose water is totally essential for freshening it up on non-wash nights. :3

that is an interesting method :) . The issue with my hair is the drying part. doing the pin curl method works for me because the hair is not wrapped around an object allowing it to have a chance at actually drying :P . The middle of my hair length is the spot that is particularly stubborn. It holds water like there is no tomorrow. I made 21 pin curls and even some of those were too thick for it to dry, so a bun would never work for me :P . my hair never dries in a braid over night.

(my math was off I meant 21 curls because I had 42 clips. 2 per curl.)

coffinhert

Writer_mom, you could try letting it dry completely, then misting it all over with a mister bottle, smoothing with a brush, then putting in pins/bun.

I've been experimenting with heat free curling for some time now. For me, when I set my hair damp, it simply doesn't dry overnight. When I wake up, it's still as damp as it was when I wrapped it up so any curl that was forming just comes out and my hair dries in it's usual frizzy state.

I've found that as much as it is hard to do it, I wait until it's dry and roll it up then. I'm also finding that I'm not really like much product in my hair.

My biggest issue is volume. I know for anyone who doesn't have any, this must seem like ridiculous whining but I have too much volume. Bouncy curls look ridiculous on me and all I want is waves that drape. So now I'm experimenting with the diametre of the rollers that I'm using. A 1.5mm flexi rod gave me beautiful curls but simply too much volume. 2.5mm gives me lovely big 40's inspired curls. I've just ordered some 2mm ones and I'm hoping they work for me.

Hopefully eventually I'll come up with a fail-safe method. It's ever knowing how it's going to come out that makes it difficult. Also I'm finding that no matter how I roll these things, I cannot get a good nights sleep with them in. I'm actually trying to find ways to wash my hair at night, leave them in for several hours and then take them out before bed. It's just not worth waking every time I roll over with that one little hair pulling at my scalp.

Good gosh do I hear you there. When I do get my hair to curl it likes to frizz on me. I have been using coconut oil to combat this. I just get a trace amount on my fingers and work them through my hair calming it down.

My husband hate little bouncy curls so I go for the large ones as well. I am going to try larger pin curls soon (3 or 4 fingers instead of 2) and would like to know how long you let your dry method set for. I don't use product either. I have also been using only purified water to do anything with my hair. This seems to be helping with the frizz and such because I have very hard tap water. I dunno is this will help you as well. Just putting it out there ;)

How did you get your hair to stay in the curl? When damp, I tried to pin curl for big curls and I guess my hair was too heavy because the hair just flops onto itself and won't hold the nice shape...tips?

the middle of my hair hardly holds a curl. That picture was right after I let my hair out. A lot of what I have done though is first going completely cone free. This week I did an ACV and lemon rinse to remove an hard water minerals and build up.

My hair is not as thick as yours so the only suggestion I can offer is doing a lot of thin yet big (diameter) curls. I do damp because my hair does not dry curl well yet.

Mine might also hold a curl a little because it is a bit on the coarse side. A single strand squeaks loudly when rubbed between my fingers and feels bumpy. It takes quite a bit of pressure to break my hair too.

average time to set a curl: 10+ hours

I wish I could help more but I am fairly new to this *hugs*

the pin curl method works better for me because the center is left open. if you can find some long snap clips, this might help the drying issue because you can spread the curl out more along the clip.

despite being slightly coarse my hair is slippery. Hence the bobby pins.

Best of luck to you :flower:

I will try to post what my pin curl method looks like soon. I am going to go for 30 curls this time.

The fact is I am just updating everything today since this marks the end of my first week taking care of my hair properly. first time i have gone a week before a wash (even then I barely used I nickles worth of shampoo, and only on my scalp.) most of what I do is tea rinses. I dunno if that has any affect on hair curl.

Recipe: 3-4 chamomile tea bags in 16 oz of purified water. rinse out once almost dry with more purified water combing each through carefully.

This can be combined with 3 peppermint tea bags or have the peppermint done separate in another 16 oz. of purified water. comb through

peppermint tea can promote growth btw. I have seen a lot from using it in combination with vitamins, protein diet, and all the combing/ scalp massages I do (combing is some times like a massage with me)

Oh, my ponytail is about that too! So your a iii techically, I see you've realized that, awsome! stubborn, thick hair here for us both! My hair is just heavy...its curly when its balacned with moisture and protein (i'm dealing with old heat damage here and my hair's structure is actually altered so it no longer curls without a proper balance) but when I DO get curls, they are poofy, I'm alright with it, but on the days my hair won't coroperate, I plan on using no heat curls/straightening methods to make it tolerable and possibly smoother on days it curls.

I think my diet, the biotin and complete vitamin regimin, the stop in washing, and the peppermint tea rinse. My shedding dropped off significantly when I stopped washing every two days. I think my scalp is chemical sensitive or something.

I pull the tape really tight when I measure my ponytail. I have to add my sweeping bang measurement to it as well

peppermint (true peppermint not the other types of mint) contains a natural form of menthol which invigorates the scalp (or area applied) increasing blood flow there which can encourage hair growth.

most stores (wal-mart too) sell herbal teas. mine sells peppermint tea for about $2-3 per box and each box has 20 tea bags which have 1 tsp of dried peppermint in them.

my rule is no more than 2 tbs. worth in one application. This translates to 6 tea bags in 16 oz. (2 cups) of water max. I typically only do 3 teabags since peppermint can irritate. I comb the tea through my dry hair. let it almost dry then rinse it out.

I use chamomile to bring out my golden undertones. I have done this a couple times this week.

hope It helps you. Some use peppermint oil. I opt for tea because the oil can really irritate and can be hard to apply. Tea rinses are just easier for me lol.

I do not know what others do the same, but I have heard oregano oil and caster oil can encourage growth along with monostat

For curls or big, bouncy curls and waves or to straighten and smooth my hair I use Caruso rollers. I customize the roller size, tension with which I roll and the amount of time they stay in to give me the desired result. Caruso rollers work by filling a porous sponge roller with steam then infusing that steam into the hair to create and lock in curl. The steam, itself is very hot, of course but by the time you pull the roller off the steamer and wrap your hair, the roller has cooled to the temperature of a warm face cloth. So, it is just gently warm, not hot when you roll your hair. My hair always feels soft, silky-smooth, cool and moisturized when I use my Caruso rollers.

I also like bun waves, either from one big bun or two or more smaller ones. Pin curls are nice but they tend to allow my demonic hair to get a little crazy, so I rarely do them. If I want really loose, barely there waves and curve to my hair, I pull it out of it's damp bun or twist, let it air dry for a bit then I divide my hair into four or more sections, comb them smooth then I twist them into long snake like ropes. I keep twisting them, (gently! of course ;)) so that they stay roped until my hair is completely dry. This takes a little while, so I do it while I am goofing around on my puter or watching the tube. Then I gently separate them with my fingers and I have soft, soft, loopy waves in my hair. They are very smooth and silky but they aren't terribly long lasting or perfectly uniform but they are kind of cute and fun. I like to twist them up in a clip and let the wavy ends fall free. :D

Good grief, I'm yappy, today. :o

How funny; I do pretty much the same thing but without bunning first. I divide my wet hair into a top, middle and bottom section (I have layers, so this is more effective than a left, centre and right section), and twist each section into a ringlet, aided by a tiny amount of setting lotion. When it's all dry, I shake out my hair and have bouncy curls for a day or so, then deep waves, and sort of a beachy look on the third day. I'd say they last well, but maybe it's the setting lotion.

I can never get one sock bun to work. So instead, I opted to do 4 sock buns. Two towards the front and two towards the back. I used a scrunchie to form the pony tails, used kid socks to make the buns, and covered them with the ends of the socks. I used a minimal amount of gel and lightly misted the hair before I put them in the buns. These were in for about....8 hours?

Keep in mind that my hair is relatively straight and requires a lot of work to get curls to stay....

I've always been under the impression that fine hair takes longer. I've got fine, thick hair that takes forever to dry; I assumed it was because there are more strands that are compacted and allow for less air flow or something.

There are a lot of other factors, though. Healthy hair takes longer to dry than unhealthy hair, for instance.

Re: Hair drying:

I think it's actually a matter of porosity. Porous hair (and curly hair tends to be porous, but so can other hair - either because of damage, or just hair type) tends to get very, very wet. It also tends to dry fairly quickly when it's *not* in a braid/bun/whatever and not hold onto dye.

Ah, right. That would explain why so many people here have reported their hair taking longer to dry as it gets healthier, because it's less porous than it was when it was damaged.

Results from headband curls (second time):

http://i49.tinypic.com/2znx44m.jpg

My first time trying wasn't so good, I just got some loose waves. This time I took smaller sections and put more water on them. I like the result!

I also tried a combination of headband curls and a few pincurls on top (where my face framing layers are) and I got almost identical hair to Kim Kardashian's, with the curls away from the face. But I don't want to take a picture because I'm lazy and still in my pj's, lol.

Tonight I'm gonna try Loepsie's sock bun curls for the first time!

Yesterday I put the rollers in almost dry hair, again with the NBP and Aloe but found I couldn't sleep on them so after several hours, I had to take them out. By the time I woke up I had second day hair which was fine but the curls were very relaxed.

I'm trying using the flexi rods in dry hair, with Nightblooming Panacea and Aloe Gel rolled in a ponytail on top of my head. I might be able to sleep this way - not sure how the line will turn out though.

My daughter used the smaller 1.5mm curlers last night and her hair was stunning this morning. All her friends told her she had Taylor Swift or Delta Goodrem hair so she was stoked. She told me she found one comfortable way to lie down and just fell asleep. This confirms for me that I am a very light sleeper. So with sleep being a big priority for me, I'm hoping the rollers on top of my head will work. They are a little heavy but I'm hoping that with my head on the pillow it will be fine.

I'll update tomorrow.

Is anyone else having problems with the cocoons mentioned above staying in? I've tried it and it just falls out (though the wave it leaves behind for a few seconds looks great).

Just stumbled across this one. The curls are amazing, but she uses... babywipes to make the curls. No dampening, nothing, just plain babywipes. And look at her curls!

This looks really interesting. I wonder if there is a cheap.. use something around the house.. alternative.

You might be right BeckyAh. I have never used styling products or heat on my hair, nor have I really dyed it. So I guess my hair is pretty healthy. Just takes an annoying amount of time to dry. my biggest issue is that dry curling won't hold, so I have to get my hair wet. I'll figure something out

Does mousse make hair more porous? Oh, so when my hair is all grown out of this damage its gonna take LONGER to dry...oh gosh...

it really depends. some people have healthy hair and no problems drying. I do. But my hair just likes to hold on to water and it's coarse, with slightly kinky stands, and thick. My climate is a bit wet too, so take that into account as well.

mouse just adds build up. I dunno about it making you hair more porous.

Lol mouse...sorry cat person, had to point that out...I live in a humid climate and as of now, my hair loves to hold onto water and is thick, so I think I am in for quite a "treat" when it all grows out damage free...longer drying time....
I know this is going to sound hypocritical but...with this new shampoo and conditioner, my hair has been consitently curly for 3 washes, I don't like the curls s much now...even though I have worked SO hard to get them back, any ideas on how to straighten them a bit with a heat free curling method?

no idea. Some people treat their hair with oil and that relaxes it a little. My hair isn't curly really. It has just now started sporting some waves and slight curling at the ends. I am sure there is a thread on this site that could help you with straightening your hair without damaging it.

Oooh, I love this thread and can't wait to check out some of the videos that have been posted!
I just got some pink foam rollers at the dollar store, and will try that on top of my head only, kind of like the sock bun. I've used the sock bun with some success, and have also used the bendable sponge rollers, but they don't always stay in very well.

I also want to try the cocoon method of rolling hair, I think that would work for my curly hair and minimize the frizz.

The best heat free curling method for me, as it turns out, is just smacking my hair into rope braids. I end up with something that is so close to my natural curl pattern it makes no difference. Which is hugely helpful since I can sleep in rope braids, and unlike a regular braid or bun it doesn't destroy my own curls. Will try to get a picture tomorrow.

Yes, I am sitting here with baby wipes in my hair. The sock curls turned out so good I couldnt resist picking up some baby wipes at the dollar store today. It said that they were alcohol free and had vit E, aloe and shea butter. However, now that I have them in my hair I wish I had got the unscented ones. If these curls turn out half as good as the ones in the video I will be very pleased.

Update* The bad news is that the fragrance was so bad that my nose started to run so I had to take them out. The good news is that even though I only had them in a few minutes I had great curls. Unfortunately I had to wash my hair to be able to stand myself so there went the curls. Today I got unscented ones so I am once again sitting here with the baby wipes in my hair but this time there is no problem. I look forward to seeing what I have in the morning!

I damp bun for a while to encourage my demonic hair to relax a bit, otherwise, it gets crazy up in there.

I hadn't thought of using a setting product. I am going to pick some up and try twisting with the product and see if I get a longer lasting wave. Great idea. :D

I concur. Before I lightened my hair, it took it's sweet old time drying. Now, it dries much more quickly than it used to. My ends almost flash dry. They are often drying in moments. :)

Ok so I did the flexi rod thing on dry hair up in a ponytail so I could attempt to sleep. I ended up cutting the elastic band out so that I didn't get a line but I still found it difficult to sleep so I have decided that flexi rods and sleeping are just not going to happen.

I'm feeling very frustrated with my hair right now. It simply feels too long but when I curl it up, it's just the right length. If I cut to that length, when I curl it will be alot shorter!

Pin curls (my variation) seems to be working for me. I did 30+ curls last night. My hair won't hold the curl in the middle for very long, but the wave left at least adds some width to my long face and the ends hold the curl slightly. I am BSL right now so I might have to look for another method soon as I get more length.

Does anybody else have an issue with excessive volume?

I don't really NEED to curl my hair because it's already curly, but I love the loose curls you seem to be getting from these methods...

I've tried sock buns a few times and it just seems like I have too much/too coarse of hair :( Here's what I got (not brushed out):

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h404/ttverdy/sockbun.jpg

It definitely curled it, but I don't think I could fit through a door like this! :) I tried oiling it before I did it, but I just can't get my hair to smoosh. The only way I get semi-not-huge hair is if I leave it in its natural state.

My hair is not damaged/frizzy, I promise! I've just always had a ton of super-coarse, giant hair.

Help??? :)

Wow! I gotta try that triple layer french. I'm learning so much from this thread.

I love having wavy or super loose curls, the more glamourous, the better. But my hair gets tangly after a day of leaving it down like that and it becomes a hot mess.

I love the look of sleek shiny bouncy big curls so I some serum on my fingertips when I am letting my out curls from whatever method: foam curlers, rags, etc etc (I gotta try that cocoon one!). Each individual curl gets some serum. Then all you gotta do is tousle it a bit, light mist of hairspray, and you are done.

My stubborn 1b hair does not hold curls but it keeps some of the texture and wave to the next day at most, especially if it was hairsprayed the day before. Here's a picture of curls made with socks:

http://s50.photobucket.com/albums/f305/silverstardust/?action=view&current=photo.jpg

Currently, in order to get some sort of texture to my hair, I french braid it, tie it off then damped the ends and put a foam roller on to curl just the ends. The look of just the ends curled is super cute!

Those pin curls look fantastic - will definitely have to try. I have experimented with using a sock bun, but found my hair tangled badly when I took it down. A simple cinnabun gives me nice, smooth curls, but it quickly turns frizzy after being worn down for a bit. Any suggestions for avoiding this? I'm used to using copious amounts of biosilk to tame the frizz, but am interested in cone-free solutions if I can find one that works.

I get my best results from sleeping in a french rope braid, nothing else gets anywhere near my natural curl pattern and this technique gives a nice amount of waves and spiral curls

I will have to try that soon. I attempted it last night and didn't get much of a result, but I have a feeling it was because my hair was so heavily oiled! I'll post my results if I get any. Thanks for sharing your method! :D

Ok, so yet another curling hair overnight epic fail for me! I must be doing something wrong, because I just got bigger, slightly frizzy hair, instead of big curls. Ok, nevermind, it's all trial and error! Next up on the list, sock/rag curls, sock bun curls or those cacoon things! :D

Anyway, I promised pics, so here they are:

My hair enjoys falling out of that around my face, and my length isn't quite there yet. The closest thing I've found for getting it to look somewhat like my normal curls is two double buns, below/behind my ears, held in place with spiral pins. It's comfy, but unfortunately not to sleep on.

Tried a different method seeing as the other one was a disaster. Sock curls (basically same method as rags but with socks! :D I have no rags, but I do have socks.)

Before:

After:

That, I'd say, is an improvement!

KahRistAhn - don't be disheartened, nothing normally works for me either. I wake up in the morning and it's always a big, hairy mess. Have you tried using aloe vera gel with water instead of water alone? I did that this time, and the curls came out much more defined than normal! They're still not exactly how I wanted them, but it's all trial and error I think. :D

I dampened my hair first. I might need a smaller sock, the smallest pantyhose one I made first was far too small. Maybe a normal sock instead of a larger one?

Wow, those came out great! How did you do it? Did you sleep in it?

I have a really hard time getting my hair to hold any type of curl or wave, even when spraying it super hold hair spray. Bun curls tend to work really well for me, but only lasts for a few hours at most. It will start out with really pretty curls and then after a few hours barely look like a wave. My hair is really fine and straight and I love the body and volume I get with loose curls and waves, I just need to figure out a successful way of getting them and having them last!

I didn't really go through all of the posts, so apologies if I repost!
My hair is very fine/thin, so it doesn't take much to curl it. When it is damp, not wet! (I like to do this after I get out of the shower and am getting ready- as my hair dries quickly) I take it all and twist it and then twist that into a bun secured by a hair tie. I leave it like that while I'm getting ready: doing my makeup, picking out my outfit, etc. until my hair is dry. Then I let it out and use a little bit of spray. Good to go! :)

Thank you ladies :)

I think I did 9-10 little knots. I twisted each strand, made a loop on my finger as a base and then I twisted the length around the loop. Something like a log roll, but in microscale :) I did it on damp hair and I slept with it. It wasn't such a big pain as I have soft pillow :D

My current favorite is headband curls for sure! I've only tried it about 3 times, but it's worked out pretty each time! I've tried sock curls (when my hair was about BSL) and it didn't work out so well for me. I got a frizzy mess. I probably did a few things wrong, though. Hoping to try sponge rollers in the future!

I know this is a heatless curl thread but...I just tried to get some big curls (as opposed to my uneven, messy wurls) and figured I would try pin curls...well, I dampened my hair and couldn't get the roll for the curl to hold, so I said screw it, got out the curling iron (once my hair dried again) turned it on and used it to form the pin curls. First off, I had NO IDEA how freakin hard my hair is to curl with heat, it doesn't like to bend it just heats up and flattens, unless I hold it on for long (with product on of course). Now, this curling iron deal broke my no heat rule, but it was once is desperation so, I'll let it slide. Second, the pin curls failed, even with heat. I left them in for 20 mins to cool and set from the heat, then they came down all pretty and nice (despite me feeling like I'm ripping my hair out with bobby pins and bad sectioning), but now, my hair is pretty much barley wavy. I always feel like I'm damaging my hair with all the pulling and sectioning that are involved in no heat curls, so any suggestions on gentle no heat curls? I already suspect breakage on my right side from tangles and such....my hairdresser even confirmed this, ouch.

Hmm...sock buns pull my hair and get heavy after awhile, so I feel like they are damaging also. I just did my hair up in headband curls, but instead of putting the headband on top of my hair, it is underneath all of the hair, then the hair is wrapped over it downward. Hopefully, this is gentle and nice enough looking to solve the icky fly aways I got from heat and bobby pins...yuck...I always feel like I'm too rough with my hair, poor hair!

Well, maybe I shouldn't call them sock curls, since they're made with babywipes :p But if I've understood everything correctly, they're made the same way. I got the idea from someone who posted a link in this thread a while back: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5T6JyPzeqE&list=PL4626FAE04F57ED14&index=7&feature=plcp
My hair is a lot shorter than hers, and I think I did smaller sections, but the technique is the same. I slept in them, and kept them in a couple more hours since I wanted to be extra sure they were really dry (I had my prom wearing them, and I would not have had time to redo them...)
Tadaa! They turned into small bouncy curls!

Here are my results:
http://i927.photobucket.com/albums/ad112/limegreenlollipop_/423653_400943476586637_100000129654638_1678477_555 480739_n.jpg
I love headband curls! I've been doing it every wash day since the weather turned warm. Instead of tucking all of my hair into the band, I loop around the front and sides then take whatever length is left and braid it. The braid is then put up in a low bun and held with 2 Goody spiral pins. It looks great all day and at night I just take the bun out to sleep in the braid. The next day I take it all out and have a curly hair day!

As long as I'm not doing anything weird with it (tiny headband curls or spiral braids), it blends together nicely. I'll wrap four or five times per side and finish with a plain ol' three strand braid. This keeps my locks all about the same size. When I take it down in the morning all I have to do is finger comb through and it's all good! I've done it enough now that I can put it up in about five minutes. Nothing strokes the ego like having people compliment how elegant my hair looks when it takes almost no time do it :D

I decided to do another one, except use rags as two of the strands, so the two strands of hair are the ones that pick up the wave/curl.

Does anyone else have problems with getting split ends from sock/rag curls, pin curls, or sock bun curls? I used to do this about twice a week where I slept in the rags or pins and finger combed it out in the morning, putting a little bit of oil in my hair to help with the frizz. Is there a good way to combat breakage for this? After about six times of doing this, my ends looked like they were fried like crazy.

I don't ever use heat, my hair's just really fine. I love the curl and volume that I get with these methods, but does anyone have some good tips to keep my ends happy?

I tried something I've never done before which was to sort of damp bun my hair in a cinnabun (that's what I call it, basically it's where you twist the hair and then form a bun, so it looks like coils wrapped around each other)! I divided my hair into upper and lower for two buns, and here is what I got:

http://i.imgur.com/mRp39.jpg

I was actually pretty surprised. Although it wasn't a resounding success, it did give me hope to see this sort of curl: http://i.imgur.com/6GJWW.jpg

I'm going to try it again probably tonight, but with several little buns to see what I get!

Does anyone have any tips for removing headband curls? I've tried it with amazing results, but it took my mom like thirty minutes to untangle my hair from around the headband in the morning... it was pretty painful and if she hadn't done it I probably would never have gotten it out. My hair is pretty long, I guess kind of close to tailbone (which is shorter, hip or tailbone? It's not quite to my belly button in the front but hangs a lot further down my back...) and I've had issues with the curls working in the past. To fit all my hair on the hairband I have to scrunch the part I've already wrapped forward a lot, if that makes sense.

I've given up on headband curls, my hair turns into one giant tangle :P
Perhaps it would work better if you twist the strand, and then twist it around the headband?

I tried to get all of my hair into a head band once. I thought I was going to have to cut the darn thing out. That's when I started just winding the front and sides, then braiding the length. I think full head band curls might work well for shoulder length but my hair is midback, almost to my waist. It just doesn't fit without force :luke:

Here are some hastily snapped shots of this morning's hair adventure. This is my first time posting pictures in LHC, so I'm crossing my fingers that they turn out.

Omg!! i loveeee this thread! (discovered something new on
LHC)

i did this subconsciously, i sleep with my hair in a bun on top of my head, and every time i take my hair down the next day, i have perfect waves, volume, and even a few curls here and there.

I've tried the partial headband + braid method and it doesn't look blended. The front and sides are sculpted curls and the back is just wavy.

My preferred method of curling is rag curling (the method where the rag is vertical, and you wrap the hair down it, and then wrap the rest of the fabric above. There was a link somewhere, I think it was on the Brave curls thread)

It gives me the nicest, neat spirally curls ever. I think this picture looks like it`s waves but I assure you that they are spirals.
And again, it`s poor quality :P

Has anyone tried dividing their hair into a top section and a bottom section and then doing two lots of headband curls?
I think this would help with having longer hair than APL or hair that's probe to tangle... This method would probably be best using a bandana as you can tie it at the front at the top of your head. Plus the lack of elasticity would stop the lower one springing down your face... next time I wash my hair I'l give this a go :)

everytime i try to do rag curls lately, ive done a few rows and just didnt want to do more so i take them out.... i do do pin curls, but i dont do elevated pincurls on my whole head, like ive seen others do. i do flat pin curls on the back and sides of my head and elevated pin curls on the top. (the top being the temples up and as far back as my crown)
this way im not flattening the elevated ones be rolling on them while i sleep and makeing them sharp turning waves like what happens when you sleep with a whole head of elevated pin curls. i think elevated pincurls give a better curl, and because theyre at the top of my head theyll be more seen then the other curls.

I use curlformers on my girls who have stick straight hair and they hold all day. On me, I've used about 4 big pieces of fabric (bigger than bandana size) rolled up, then use them as curlers. It's easy to sleep on, but I get frizz with it. I get frizz with anything though, so maybe it's just me.

So I guess you need to air dry or blow dry the hair first?

Thanks for sharing! :)

Bringing some life back into this thread =D

The other day I tried this method of rag curls: http://www.longlocks.com/how-to-curl-hair.htm
I usually do only two since my hair isn't that thick, but this time I did four.

These were my results: I thought they were very pretty! =D

Here's a crappy-quality pic of my Curlformer curls from today! It's only half of my face because I was re-doing some on the other side. :D

I only slightly dampened my hair and didn't leave them in very long....a few hours.

I am a heat-free curling junkie-maniac and it's not everyday I come across something new. At first I thought, "oh it's just rag curls, nothing new." Just wait until she pulls out the sharpie. Here's the video, in case you guys haven't seen it yet (not sure if it's been posted yet) but anyhow, enjoy!

I use two bands, and do one side on each. I do the first wrap around both bands then carry on on one - using the bottom band first. Much less tangle than using one band

My hair is shorter than most of yours, but I'll share for fun. I sleep in pincurls sometimes. They're easy to sleep in because they lay flat against your head, and the curls last a couple of days--more relaxed on the second day, but still good to make victory rolls or something like that!

I'm attending a Christmas party tonight, so I set it last night. (DD helped with the photo editing = Mom's a dogface... O.o)

I can remember my mom, grandmother and aunts curling their hair this way Browneyedsusan. I used to make pin curls that ended at my shoulders when I had waist length hair in high school. Every one would ask how I only got the bottom curls. When I told them pin curls they kind of snubbed their noses up. Well we all know how teenage girls can be, hasn't changed in the decades I have been around.

Loving your results with the Curlformers! I hesitated for nigh on a year before I bought mine, simply because nothing has ever worked to curl my hair- I thougt bandanna curls might have been the answer, but nope, no such joy. Bit the bullet with curlformers, and I'm in love xD Have a head-full right now, and shall post a picture when I get up tomorrow before work =] Exellent thread!

I am trying a headband curl method, sort of. I have a set of these old-school velcro rollers (http://media3.onsugar.com/files/usr/0/3362/Picture%204_5/i/Old-School-Beauty-Part-III-Hair-Rollers.png) like my mom uses to curl her short hair and I threaded one onto a bandana. I used it to keep the ends from getting rolled too tightly and rolled my length onto the bandana then tied the bandana like a headband. The curler is invisible and I have I was hoping for a curl method I wouldn't feel goofy about wearing all day. I am not sure I don't feel goofy, though! I have a sort of scarf-roll-faux-bob thing going on.

And it remains to be seen what kind of curls I get.

ETA: it did work. :-) my curls unified into one curl, though.http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a296/jaspersu/photo-1.jpg

I've tried the headband method but I find my hair is so think and coarse it is just not feasible for me, there is no room for all my hair to fit on that headband and then I get so much trouble trying to untangle it afterwards! My votes go to flexirollers, love those! Pin curls don't stand a chance against my coarse, naturally straight hair.

TheHowlingWolf
December 25th, 2012, 01:51 PM
Last night I tried those flexi rod curlers and they didn't work. They didn't stay in my hair at all and they pulled on my hair so bad! So I tried twisting my hair & bobby pinning it. Ugh. This morning, getting the pins out was a nightmare, my hair hates them and they always break/snap my hair even if I'm really careful. Anyways the "curls" turned out horrible. They're so ugly! lol. What's "funny" (though I'm not laughing!) is when my hair was shorter, it was really curly! I hated it back in jr. high and high school and used to straighten my hair everyday! Now the length weighs it down and by the time I take a bbb to it, it becomes mostly straight and now I want curly hair! Sigh, you always want what others have lol.

Currently wearing 6 braids with bendy rollers on the end. My hair was slightly damp and I smoothed in some aloe vera gel before braiding - this usually helps the wave stick around longer!
