I'm wondering what was the first bun you were able to do as hair grew. Right now I'm in french twist land, but can't wait to expand my styles. Which buns work best for shorter, fine thin hair.

Bra strap length hair enabled me to do my first bun. It was a very simple one. Just a ponytail, divided in two sections. Each section was divided again and the hair was twined down to the ends. One twined section was then coiled around the ponytail band, pinned with crimped hairpins as I went. The remaining section was twined and then wound around the bun in place.

I posted this the other day. My not-yet-APL hair looks really nice like this. She has extensions in her hair and curls it before she styles it, but I like how it looks with my straight-ish hair, too!

(Oh! I use my spin pins for this, and they work really well!)

I was able to do a cinnabun with shoulder length hair. I was able to do more intricate, braided buns when my hair was about APL-BSL. :)

I did a pony tail bun twist the hair and wrap it around your ponytail. I used metal flip clips to hold the ends.

I too started with cinnabuns at shoulder length. Now I'm apl and I usually do braided buns.

Peacock twist at around APL, or tails-up (as the Flexi8 site calls this updo).

I could do twists and such with shoulder length. I couldn't do a real bun (that went all the weay around at least once) until I was BSL. Now that my hair is longer I've found it easier to do other types of buns.

I can get it all the way around now, but it's the size of a walnut.

I'm 2 inches or so from APL and still can't do a bun. I've tried a cinnabun, because so many other people seem to be able to do it at that length, but I'm getting like, 1/2 a cinnabun! And I don't think my hair is so thick that I shouldn't be able to accomplish one, but oh well. I'm with you, I can't wait to expand my hair updo repertoire!

I am past BSL now and finally can do some buns. Still not many, I need more length. Absolutely nothing braided yet..

I was able to do a cinnabun at shoulder length. I can just now do a lazy wrap bun and I'm almost APL. I was never able to do a french twist that looked good. I always ended up with a "bunch" at the top.

My longest length is at APL and my shortest length (bangs area and some layers all over) is about 2" above collar bone) and using a clip like the Ficcare has enabled me to wear a cinnamon bun much earlier than I would be able to with a hair stick. I wore one all day today without having to redo at any point in the day.

I can do a cinnabun with a ficcare or a fork. I can do a lazy wrap bun with a hairstick. This is the only bun I can currently do with a stick and believe me, Ive tried!! My hair is 22" and around APL straight. It seems to vary so much from person to person!

Can only do a sock bun at 24.5 inches (doesn't count I know!) So I'm rather envious of all you ladies around APL+ that can bun. :)

Grow hair, grow!

That's not a problem for me. My hair is so thin that nothing bunches. My twist is really just a tuck the ends in, but at least it's not a walnut on the back of my head.

My "starter" bun, before I found this place, was just a little bun-shaped wad secured with an octopus clip (http://www.amazon.com/Scunci-No-slip-Grip-Octopus-Count/dp/B001SXPSD2) as a bun cage. For a dressier version you might try a bun cover (http://www.etsy.com/search?includes[]=tags&q=bun+cover) or a bun cage (http://www.bronzejewelers.com/snoods.htm).

Aside from the sock bun, I'd suggest trying the Cheater's Easy Hairstick bun (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=25145).

A folded braid (http://public.fotki.com/shewhoknows/longhair/my-styles/folded-braid-flexi8.html) can also be done with pretty short hair.
