So, I've scoured the threads looking for something useful but have not found what I wanted, so I will ask you all lovely people directly for advice.

My hair has been 2 stepped with henna+indigo twice, so it's pretty darn dark. What I want to do is lighten my hair and use a deposit-only dye (i.e. Manic Panic) to achieve something along the lines of this effect:

Now, this is what I know:

If I bleach my hair, it'll be green, which is ok because I want to use some teal color on my hair.
Bleaching will damage my hair somewhat, which is also ok because the damage will only be on some of my tips.

What I don't know is

How light can I get the indigo to go?
How will pink/purple look on bleached indigo hair?
Will it help if I shout "Go, indie, go?"

Anyways, I was wondering whether anyone had attempted something like this before.

Why don't you try using color oops, or color be4 in stead? It will get rid of the henna/indigo without giving you green hair. You can follow it up with some honey lightening. It's been successfully done before, here are some directions and before and after photos: honey faded hendigo *pics* (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=70682) and Successful henna removal. Yes, you are reading this correctly. (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=85463).

Other alternatives are: I Lightened my Too-Dark Henna with Sun-In (Yes, really.) VERY pic heavy!! (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=19317) and Hendigo Lightening with Go Blonder (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=85684&highlight=blonder) (John Frieda).

If you decide to use bleach anyway, you can minimize the damage by doing an overnight coconut oiling and then using the bleach on your still oiled hair. More info here: The uses of coconut oil (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=53786&highlight=coconut+oil).

Manic Panic is supposedly made to be used on bleached hair and others have used it on virgin hair as well (you can go to their website for photos) so it should work fine either way.

Good luck! :)

Thank you Roscata! I looked into the links you posted and decided I'll try Colorfix to remove some of the indigo (several members have reported success with that). I'm thinking about using up the bleach I have in the house after that, but I'll make that call once I see what effects Colorfix has. If I do bleach, I'll be sure to do some oiling first.

Let's see if we can get those tips to lighten up enough for crazy colors. I'm heading over to the Colorfix aisle.

TUN TUN!

I'm pretty sure that the tips you show are done with chalk dust and might even show up on dark hair.

Oh, wow, I didn't know that was an option.

The original tutorial does use bleach/dyes:

http://thebeautydepartment.com/2011/07/tipped-out/

but a google search yielded this as well:

http://www.hercampus.com/school/jmu/diy-hair-chalking

Which is pretty cool, but I do want something a little more permanent than day applications.

(But if my dying experiment fails, I'll probably give chalking a go...)
