I keep hearing everyone talk about oil shampoo. Can you tell me more about it?

How does it differ than regular shampoo? What are it's main benefits? What hair types does it work well with? Is it something that can be made at home with the things already in my kitchen?

Soap by definition is simply an oil or fat heated and combined with an alkaloid (opposed to shampoo, detergent, which often have many ingredients and may or may not contain soap.) So, is oil shampoo, just traditional, pre industrial revolution, soap? What makes oil shampoo special?
