Sock bun time!

Just in time before spring hits and it's getting too warm to wear socks :wannabe:

Oh I love sock buns!

Here is one I did last week but it was too messy and off-center.

So...does anyone have any tips for making a securely rolled and even sock bun?

I have tried this a couple of times with a smallish sport sock, using loepsie's method with tips from luxepiggy's awesome blog post (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/blog.php?b=82518). Alas, my hair is not rolling tightly enough in the bun, and by the time I have rolled all the way to my head, one area or another still has a few more inches of hair to roll. The bun ends up looking loose, poofy and sort of hanging, instead of smooth and snug against my head.

My hair is on the thick side- perhaps a larger circumference sock/donut would work better? I had thought that using a small sock would result in a tighter bun. Anyone have any experience with this before I get a pair of scissors and ruin half the socks in my sock drawer? :)

This is from a couple months back, I haven't gotten around to wearing it since then. Perhaps I should again though, it was thoroughly enjoyable!

I tried a sock bun for the first time yesterday. I did a high one and ow my poor hair that wasn't used to being in a high updo really hurt after a few hours.

Anyway, I wanted to try the sock bun again today since it looked so fun and for once gave me big hair :) This time I made a low side sock bun.
Here it is! (I can't get great pictures since I've lost my camera charger so my camera doesn't work. This photo was taken with my phone camera.)

Uptosomeone - I see you have your socks all lined up, ready to make more great buns! ;o)

I have a couple of those "bun form" thingies, which work like the sock, though with a snap on the ends so it is easier to wind and connect.

Consequently, I don't do the sock buns as I don't have to! I love the look of those buns on steroids, though!

Does anyone know what type of sock would work for a rather skinny ponytail? I was thinking a small sock (like a kid's sock) might be better as I don't seem to have enough hair to fill the middle of my regular sock, or to cover the whole sock when the bun is done

I hope I can do this one! It would be fun to have a huge bun for a change :D

For my short, skinny ponytail, I put in a ponytail with a brown scrunchi. I'm using a rolled up brown baby legwarmer for a sock. Then use another brown scrunchi around it as it holds better than a regular elastic. Gentler too.

I had my sock bun on today also when I went skiing a 10 km trip and another hour doing a snow shoe walk. It held the whole time great and still looked good afterwards.
So sock buns are apparently great for sweating your whole shirt soaking wet kind of activities, and it gives you nice curls once you've let your hair dry from all the sweating :P

Thank you! :D I wasn't able to find this exactly, but I did find something very similar that I think will work!

I have to use a giant legwarmer for mine. Long and thick hair needs a bigger surface to be draped over.

First sock bun in a long time, I forgot how secure and comfy this style is. I like look of the fully rolled sock buns better, esp. with a nice flower, lovely spring/summer style. But I can't seem to roll them neatly, maybe because of my layers? I find wet/damp hair easier to handle and rolls better. This is a sock bun with the leftover hair rope braided and some Bijoux Manoel pins.

I laughed so hard because a co-worker of mine saw sock buns on Rachael Ray and commented to me about how cute it was and did I know you could do it? She'd never seen it before (:

I think my hair is at a state where it'll fit into a sock bun now. I'll try this week and come back!

I've tried the sock bun multiple times and it never works for me. Cannot get it tight or secure, just a loose floppy mess LOL I've watched YT tutorials & no luck. I wanted to do this for the curls (go to bed with misted hair in a sock bun & wake up to glorious curls) but they don't stay in my hair at all, because I can't get it rolled tighly enough, usually have part of the hair pulling painfully tight, yet the bun itself is a couple inches too loose & dangling away from the head. Help! LOL need some tips for thick waist/hip length hair. :-) especially because I wear my hair in a bun nearly every day for work, this would add some subtle variety.

I have waist/hip length hair.
The secret is to do it straight, if you pull your hair to one side and try to roll it, it's all wonky. I do the first few rolls to the side, and then move it above my head and back, and roll towards the base. The other thing I do is roll, unroll, pull the bun tight so the hair is taut and roll again in spots I mess up. Once you have the ends and any layers securely in, rolling and unrolling in spots closer to the base seems to really tighten it up. The other thing that helped me was to use not a sock, but a rolled up fingerless knit glove. Bobby pins go right through the knit and you can pin it really securely.

I love the sock bun! It's my favourite way of wearing my hair when I don't have a lot of time for styling. It's easy and it stays up really well. These photos are from january & february but I'll make sure to take some sock bun photos now in March too.

I haven't been able to do a sock bun for a long time. Now that I've gained some length and adjusted the size of the donut I use, I can get it to cooperate again just in time for the style of the month!

Here's a fully-rolled sock bun from today that has been decorated with a scrunchie that's made up of little flowers. You can't really see them, unfortunately since today was an overcast day. I'll probably take a better one eventually when the sun comes out.

I really like the look of a sock bun with a rope braid around it and I can't wait until my hair gets long enough to do that style!

oh, thanks Arya, I will have to give it a few more tries & see.
I think my problem is that I've been doing it upside down this whole time (bent over head hanging down lol) because that's how I saw it done in the video I watched (I think, anyway, otherwise no idea why I'd be upside down for it!) It always made the hair in the center of the bun pull very tight (yet not snug enough), but the outside hair extremely loose, hence my floppy, hanging bun that would not cooperate & sit snug against my head. I've been using a knit knee high sock, which is about the size of a real donut.

So, how exactly do you make the sock? Is it just a simple cut off the toe and roll sort of thing, or is there something special you need to do?

Very cool sock buns, I haven't mastered rolling up the entire length yet. At the moment I just cover the sock then plait the rest of the length and wrap it around the base of the bun. I love it, makes me feel like I've got extra huge hair :D

Sock Bun (http://www.flickr.com/photos/healormor/6984777481/) by healormor (http://www.flickr.com/people/healormor/), on Flickr

I tried both styles of using a sock bun. My flickr description:

Left is the kind where you roll up your hair inside the bun as you go, and as you can see it will usually be quite a bit bigger than the draping style on the right.

The right bun is where you put your pony tail through the middle of sock roll, and then drape your hair all around the roll, and put a rubberband around it. If you have shorter hair, that might be all you need to do, but I ended up having a bunch left over, sticking out in all sorts of silly directions. I ended up twisting them all around the sock bun, so it created that ring you see on the right. Neither of these is my favorite thing in the world, but it was fun to finally try out the sock bun thing.

Most people just cut off the toe and roll, I use black tights and roll up the whole leg with the ends cut off. It makes really even donuts :)

I need the ribbon around the base because after I put the elastic over the donut the whole bun seems to stand away from my head and it looks a bit strange so the ribbon covers the gap. I can't wait until I have long enough hair to wrap around the base to cover it instead!

I have tried a fully rolled one before but the pesky layers make it awkward. I love how sock buns look but they always seem tight and heavy on my head so I don't wear them very often.

I've done it. The bun is cute - its a bumpy curly sock bun - I'll try to get a picture next time. I makes my curl size more uniform and bigger - I guess the curls look just like everyone else's - but the bun is bumpier. If that makes sense?

I've got the same wurliness as you and it gives me big rolling curls/waves as opposed to my usual wurls which are tighter (see avatar) so I guess it kind of loosens and increase curl st the same time for me! Would love to hear what happens for properly curlies :)

I'm not a big fan of the fully rolled sock bun. I mean, I'm not kidding anyone. There is no way I have that much hair. I rarely get the sock fully covered.
After a few hours, I get a headache. I don't care for the extra weight.

Here's my best attempt at a sock bun. It works best for me to do it with slightly damp hair. I can't do a fully rolled one otherwise.

:( I just made a post here- but it's gone! Are they being eaten?

I'll try it again:

My first sock bun, after 300 tries. It feels loose, but isn't. I found it very comfortable.

Haha, so I took this pic at the beginning of the month and just now remembered to post it. But hey, at least I'm still in March! ;)
Plus, you get a bonus look at the messy bathroom! Yay!

I have so much trouble making my sock buns look neat, and my hair always manages to get badly tangled when taking them out. Does anyone have suggestions or tips on making a sock bun?

This is my first take on the sock bun -which was done out of pure envy after seeing Lyytikka's gorgeous bun :D

Mine looks a bit weird though.. I decided to braid all that remaining hair and then wrap it around. But the start of the braid was a little too fat for that, I guess.

I tried the sock bun last month, I had the length braided around the base of the bun and smaller braids criss-crossing the bun itself. It looked nice but I had to take it out after a couple of hours because it just felt like so much weight was pulling on my scalp. It was really beginning to hurt.

Rocking my sock bun now for my interview :D Braided the remaining hair, added a red flower for touch. Thought maybe the flower would make me a little more memorable ;)

What size sock would I need for just below BSL ii hair?

My hair is this length, it's more about thickness if you are not doing a fully rolled sock bun (I can never master these). If your hair is ii, pick a sock that is close to your natural color and you'll be able to do an array of sizes. I use a foam donut that is blond in color and if my hair doesn't cover it totally, it's very hard to tell.

Thanks, that really helped! My hair is hennaed burgundy so I will look for a maroon sock.

WHOA...your sock buns are AMAZING!!
I just recently began mastering them....securing them with a scrunchie or a hair fork.
My forms were made from old crew socks, and then I made some from knee hi nylons.
I also bought a form which snapped, but it was hard to use and popped open, so I sewed the ends together.
Initially I wasn't fond of this style; now I love it....and use it on those days when my hair is slippery and needs to be put up. :)
