View Full Version : Conditioner on dry (not wet) hair?

Hi all.
The past week I've been doing an experiment.
I usually co-wash my hair. This week I decided, rather than wetting my hair with water then adding conditioner, I would add conditioner directly to my dry hair.
My hair usually requires a lot of conditioner, and yes, this made my hair use up even more.
But what I've noticed is that I get much better results. Better (and quicker) detangling, softer hair, and since I co-wash, cleaner feeling hair.
I usually apply conditioner, do my body routine, and then duck my head under the shower to get my scalp wet. I briefly scrub my scalp for a quick cleanse and then rinse the conditioner out, finger combing as I go. Detangling has been a dream and that's a big statement coming from me.
Has anyone else tried this? What were your results?
For thoroughness, I'm currently using VO5 Rosemary and Sage Tea conditioner. I do a vinegar rinse afterward because of the hard water in my city.

I haven't tried, but it makes sense !
We say to wet hair before going into the sea, so that less salt is absorbed becaue hair is already saturated with soft water, and then rinse with soft water again... and this limits salt water penetration, right ?
So if you apply conditionner directly, I guess that will help the conditionner itself be sucked in the hair (water content + other moisturising stuff), rather than first saturating it with pure water.
Good thing to try, for sure !

My thoughts exactly! I was thinking about how much my hair loves salt water and swimming in the ocean. Unfortunately, my hair did not like it when I added sea salt to my conditioner. My next idea was to add conditioner directly to my dry hair and it's working like a dream.
Of course, I don't know the long term results, but I think it could certainly become a form of deep treatment.

My experiences have been the direct opposite, in fact, my hair looks and feels better when I used very diluted conditioner.

Yes, I do it this way anyway because I like to leave the conditioner on for a spell of time and don't want water dripping down.
It takes quite a bit of conditioner - but I got tons of VO5 on sale at Jewel last year so not an issue. I just saturate everything, put it in a shower cap and leave it on for 30-60 min.
I am finding that doing this may be bugging my scalp a bit - actually seems to dry it out sometimes.

I find that applying conditioner to dry hair does yield better results as it allows for more absorption of the product. I don't apply it to my scalp though, only on the length below my ears.

But using it for a CO wash pretty much necessitates applying it to the scalp - at least it does for me to get flakes and oils washed away.
I think though, I am going to try soaking the length, leaving that on for the extra time - then doing the cleansing part along with water for a shorter amount of time. I think leaving the conditioner in contact with the scalp for an extended period was a bad move.

I co-wash every day, but yeah, for this dry application, I've been leaving it on just the length for most of the shower. Only when I'm ready to clean my scalp do I get my whole had wet and mush the conditioner around to cleanse the scalp.
Usually, for a wet application, I just put the conditioner everywhere. It's never caused a problem, but the whole process takes about 2 minutes.
I've noticed that whenever I try to leave conditioner on my head for extended amounts of time (deep treatments or leave-ins) I have to avoid getting it on the scalp. It's just irritating.

Yup, I do this nearly every wash.
I have to CWC though as I have a really greasy scalp without shampoo so it's cone free conditioner (tresemme naturals at the mo) ponytail for an hour or more, then shampoo and coney conditioner again in the shower.
I find it really helps maintain the bright colours I use as the shampoo rinsing out doesn't strip the ends.

Yes, I do this all the time- I call it my moisturizing hair mask, and I leave it on for hours.

I tend to do this when I'm trying for some deep conditioning or if I've really oiled my hair and want to make sure I get it all out. Day-to-day, though, I tend to consider it too much of a hassle and think it uses too much product. It does make CO both more cleansing and more moisturizing, though.

I do this too. One of my favorite things to apply right now is the Shea Moisture Purification Mask. I also have used AOHSR with honeyand coconut oil. It leaves my hair really soft and conditioned.

I 'm doing a co wash tonight and think I'll use a variation of this. I'll put conditioner on my length an hour or so before my shower and cover it with the silver cap, then do a full head co when I'm in the shower.

I love doing this with a pantene hair mask that is designed to prevent ends splitting. I always get great results:-)
