View Full Version : Nervous about trimming hair for the first time...

So, I would like to trim my hair a teeny bit, to freshen up my hemline so to speak. But, I've never trimmed my own hair before. :o My last trim happened in a salon, about a year and half ago and I would really prefer to do it myself to aviod potential hair catastrophe.
I do have a pretty nice pair of hair trimming scissors that I've been using to snip the random fairy knot.

So I guess the questions I have are:

*For Feye's self-trim method, does anyone get their SO to trim the hair when it's pulled back behind you? I would like the DH to do this, since I know I would muck it all up if I tried to bring the tail up and over my shoulder.

*What is considered micro-trimming? Can you micro-trim using Feye's method, or is it something entirely separate?

*How do you know if your trimming scissors are sharp enough to prevent damage? Like I mentioned before, I've only ever used mine to snip fairy knots.

Thanks for listening to my ramblings. I'm just kinda nervous to take shears to the hair, since I've never done it before. But I think it would be nice to clean up my hemline. :)

GUURL! I made a "nervous about first time self trimming" thread a couple of months ago too! :D

I don't, but I could. I prefer doing it myself, because I want to be able to trim my own hair anywhere and anytime I want.

I was scared of messing things up but longer before even actually considering self trimming I watched videos and read instructions and tried on myself, so I could see if it was difficult etc.. The day I trimmed my own hair I did it a lot of times too (because I was so nervous) but at that point the bringing the tail up was already perfect. So my advice is trying it out many times before coming near a scissors.

Microtrimming is when you cut very little hair. Yes it can, it's no different. You just cut like, 1/3 of an inch.

Well that I can't answer. But if they are hair scissors, then they should work fine, I guess.

Some self-trimming videos that helped me:

The best piece of advice ever: Don't cut too much hair. Always cut very little hair, so you can untie your hair and see your hemline. If it is alright, then tie it again and cut more.

Another great advice: Honestly, you don't have to be extremely precise when cutting hair. It's a haircut, not amputation.

Good luck! :) Not that you will need it :p
