I'm finally going to manic panic my hair later tonight (virgin snow), but I noticed that in the instructions it says to first wash hair with a ph balancing shampoo. I don't have any ph balancing shampoo that I'm aware of so should I just use normal shampoo? what difference does it make?

I think they mean to use a clarifying shampoo, so that way you can remove any buildup that might make it harder for the color to soak in.

This also threw me off back when I first used Manic Panic... Back then I just washed with regular shampoo. My hair is very fine and thin and it didn't cause any problems. Hope this helps!

I would wait until you have the right shampoo.

Thanks for all the quick replies! I'm thinking all just do regular shampoo and then a white vinegar rinse. I'm excited! :p

hope it's not too late. Put the manic panic on DRY hair. ( can air dry of course) Something about it being dry works better- the color seems to be richer.
POST PICTURES! I love manic panic

I clarify my hair and then use a PH balance shampoo. Then I apply the dye to dry hair. I cover with a bag for four hours and rinse out, applying some conditioner. I have no problem with the color staying (actually, I have trouble getting it out) so the conditioner works fine for me.
The color bleeds for a long time for me, so a sleep cap is essential or I'd have stained sheets.
I love Manic Panic and can't wait to see your results!

I use Directions, which is similar to Manic Panic, and like the previous poster said, I get the best results when I apply it to dry hair without shampooing at all. :)

With the virgin snow I clarify using a basic no cone shampoo with a teaspoon of baking powder/bicarbonate of soda, leave til its dry or very close then apply on dry hair.
Obviously you don't need to worry about colour bleed with virgin snow so leave it on as long as possible for maximum yellow removal, I've let it dry in my hair and slept on it before with no adverse effects :)
Post some pics when you're done ;)

I've used virgin snow... It doesn't stick as well as Wella, but it makes your hair shinier. You are you to have a bit of uneven color, but not too bad. :)

Just use regular shampoo and don't condition it. Let it dry all the way and you're good to go.

Most shampoos are pH balanced.
Dyes like Manic Panic stick around longer if the first rinse is a vinegar solution. (I used a large pitcher.)

I just used clarifying shampoo, and the Manic Panic stayed in my hair for several months. :) After rinsing out your dye, you can rinse it with a ACV rinse on just that portion and then condition it. Go to the Manic Panic website, it tells you how to do a vinegar rinse for your dye. :)

I guess it depends on your hair, but I used Directions on dry hair, the day after I washed with my normal shampoo, and a month later, the dye is still bright :)

I'm thinking of manic panicking my dark brown hair purple. No bleach for me, so I hope it'll show up. I can't decide between purple haze and ultra violet though. I have some directions violet dye but am reluctant to try it after someone told me it stains everything even after dry (ie clothes and pillows).

I've used both Purple Haze and Ultra Violet, and I would recommend Purple Haze. Ultra Violet looks more blue-y in most light, and it's a really odd shade of purple. Purple Haze is gorgeous, and I've had it in my bangs for several months now. :3

I used a clarifying one too, since I'm a hopeless 'conehead.
Hadn't considered trying it on dry hair, but I bet it's way easier to get an even application that way.
