View Full Version : Updos that show off hair sticks?

Please feel most welcome to post pictures to show off your fancy hair sticks here!

I'm asking because I'd love to take some action shots with some new hair sticks, but my updos keep eating them! (I know, I know, my hair just may be too long.) The only one I can think of that shows off a stick is the nautilus bun, but there have to be more, right?

Thanks!

I think my favourite, quick and easy, goodlooking style the Pencil Bun shows a hairstick off very nicely, or a fork come to that. It also can be done with a somewhat shorter stick/fork than a cinnabun needs.

My antler hair sticks! :)

EDIT:
I just realized I hadn't stated the reason I put this photo up for you- *facepalm*.
I too have noticed that hairsticks get eaten... So I try to buy longer sticks now (most of the sticks I get now end up being custom. I need sticks that are 7in+ long, not the standard 5in. With the bun I did here, the sticks are only 7in, but I fitted them in a such a way that they stuck up more... if that makes sense? Instead of having them go completely through the bun to hold it, I made it so they had most of the hair securely held, that way you could see the majority of the sticks.

Can't believe I forgot to add this... GAH! Forgive me, my brain has apparently decided to leave to make room for the baby as well...

Mine are all in my albums cause it won't let me post them here. I love the Chinese bun and the weave bun. I found the weave bun tutorial on here somewhere. It may help to eat your length.

I have some pictures that I will post later, but Long Hair Bear, in order to post pictures from your albums, you must right click on the picture and hit "Copy Image URL." Then go to make a new post, hit the insert image button and paste the image URL. Copying the URL for the page in your album doesn't work to insert the image itself.

LOVE THIS LOOK! I'm sure my hair is not long enough to do your bun but do you have a tutorial? It's so chic.

Yes I most certainly do! And I really love your pairing of a big, modern bun with a set of slightly barbaric looking hair sticks. It's very fresh and elegant. So please do a tutorial :D

I tried the weave bun, which I'd never attempted before. It's surprisingly comfortable, but I'm going to need to use my longer sticks if they're going to show at all. Thanks for the suggestion, though! Now I know how to do another bun. :D

I suggest the pinless braided bun (http://www.prismnet.com/~cortese/hair/styling.html#pinless). Most of the bun is tucked behind the hairstick, so the hairstick really gets to show off! I'm not above adding a couple of spin pins to ensure it stays put, but at longer lengths that may not be needed, at least at a time when one is less active.

Another person chiming in with a tutorial request! :D Did you get those antlers as hair sticks? If so, I'd love to know where!

Wow!!! I guess I'll have to do it now! I'll try and do one this weekend!

And they are from my friend JC, here's her shop on Etsy! http://www.etsy.com/shop/JCMcCairnsCottage

Mention Amber sent you if you buy from her! Right now she's about to have a baby, so she's pulled most things from her shop- but they'll be up again soon!

haha, I know, right?

I'm still looking for an updo that works but I'll give the braided one suggested above a try and share pics if it works.

Most sticks and forks disappear into my hair, but the one that I generally use is basically just a knot (when I found it years ago it was called a swirly bun, but since then someone came up with another bun and has called it swirly bun) with the tail left loose or wrapped round depending. Shown here a few years ago with a 6" chakte viga Baerreis simple round fork.

Otherwise my standard plaited fig 8 is good as long as the sticks don't stab me in the neck!

I know what you feel about the hair eating toy thing - besides buying longer sticks (not always an option), here's what I do :
- center held buns, where most of the hair will go below the stick
- braided buns - best way to get the smallest bun possible.
- center held braided buns = win . Kinda like this :

In the worst cases (small sticks you don't want to give up on) : double buns.

ETA : I second akka naeda's knot with tail hanging, too.

Well, these days I find that normal sticks disappear, so my logic was to get to just longer sticks, but thicker! LOL:p

WOW! That's a beautiful braided bun! And it indeed shows off the hairstick!

Just took your advice on a center held braided bun. Can you see that the stick looks like bamboo? This is one of my favorite sticks.

This! It's much more secure than you might think. Zilvervisje has a tutorial here (http://www.youtube.com/user/zilvervisje).

Also, the nautilus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZ3bvnDZ5aQ) (literally just the first twenty seconds of the video) and its braided equivalent (http://igorsbelltower.blogspot.com/2011/09/braided-nautilus-tutorial.html) show sticks well if you just poke them through the centre part. :)

I have to use a fair amount of product and a number of pins to get mind to hold and stay right all day. Taking it out is kind of stressful but I love the look.
