After this thread about my infinity bun failure (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=88539), I had a lot of requests for a tutorial of my mistake. And a lot of proposals for what to name it. In the interest of simplicity, I'm going with "Helix bun."

http://x4c.xanga.com/950e150048532280943374/w223808774.png

I made a video of me putting it up, which you can find here (http://youtu.be/_2t0IMASesI). I recommend turning off your sound because I have a really squeaky radiator in the bathroom and I'm not talking anyway.

I think for shorter lengths, one can skip the third coil and just wind the remainder of the hair around the base of the bun. That's probably what I did the first time when I screwed up the infinity bun.

Let me know how it works or if I need to explain anything more clearly! :)

I bet it works with your hair! I'm a few inches away from proper calf length but I think another loop around at the end wouldn't make too much difference.

Thanks for commenting! :D

Thank all of you! I'd love input if I'm confusing at all. This is my first demonstration, so I expect it needs improvement.

I made it! :D It seems to hold really well. Mine doesn't look as good as yours, but it's ok. I need more practise. :p

I wasn't confused at all. I didn't read the instructions too much because I follow visual instructions better.:)
(of course my hair is way too short, but one day!)

Liked the way you tilted your head to show clearly what you did.
Now I just need to get the hair todo it on myself, be back in a few years :)

Wow, that is one head-eating bun! Thanks for the vid - I don't think my hair's long enough either (maybe in a year or two), but I'll come back to it and try it then. :D

Here's a Helix Bun Jr. version:
My hair is only 32"

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=7960&pictureid=126997

When you make the first top loop and flip it, THEN insert the stick. Then continue to twist and wrap around the stick to make the bottom loop, immediately bring the rest up and around the top loop. Ta-dah! Hope that made sense!

GREAT bun Gossamer!

Here's my attempt:
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=6995&pictureid=127057

It looks a bit different from yours, Gossamer, and I'm not sure if it's because I did something wrong or if it's just an effect of my thin, heavy tapered hair. Regardless I really like it and I can see myself wearing it a lot.

I agree, I am not sure how to do a french twist either! I think I succeeded once but didn't have enough pins and it fell down. What a mess!

Did it!
Supercomfortable bun and holds with only sticks and no pins :-)
I did have to use long chopsticks otherwise the bottomloop would escape.

LOL I'll also show you the failed attempts, uploading pics now.

Loose version (eating a hairstick that was too short, needed extra pins), was sagging fast
http://img837.imageshack.us/img837/1192/helix3.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/837/helix3.jpg/)

Final version (2 chopsticks), still wearing it

PixxieStix I agree with you, I think I'd need another 20 inches though lol. So I guess we will try out this style in what, 3.5 years looks like 2015 is our year!

In all seriousness, OP this hairstyle is stunning, and I never thought I'd say this but I like it more than the Infinity Bun itself!!! Heck I even like it more than a French Twist or the Chinese Bun. You've outdone yourself and so have all of the other posters you've posted pictures of their buns.
