So last night while I was vid chatting with my boyfriend (this is a totally PG story and vidchat, lest you get nervous and stop reading now), I was fiddling with my hair and quite by accident discovered I had braided myself a beard. He and I got a huge kick out of it so I thought I'd share it with you guys and post a how-to, in case any of you were similarly tickled.

Before you ask, the sunglasses are goofy, I know, but I'm too new for an album and I feel weird about posting pictures of my face online for the world to see.
So today I decided to make a tutorial. I was kind of hoping you guys would get a kick out of it and post your own beard pics or any goofy hairstyles. Going incognito in some sort of disguise like my sunglasses is encouraged, because I can't see album pics yet, but of course if you don't feel comfortable posting a pic for all to see, DON'T! I can wait for album access! At least your friends will get a kick out of it! But as I remade the bead braid, taking pics with my crappy webcam, I decided that I could do better. SO. It was already weird that I decided to do this, but now I have 2 beard tutorials? I can only imagine the first impression I am making. I've never made a tute before, so hopefully this is adequate. I'm going to post the original first for those with longer or thinner hair, as your hair probably won't be able to hold up the weight of the newer version. Then the new and improved version will be in a comment (I caved and used my camera, I couldn't take the bad webcam quality, even though it was much easier). Lastly, a warning: the hair beard keeps your face VERY warm. I can almost imagine doing this if I were skiing or something, haha.
Here we go!
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7039/6921808713_726e31f538.jpg
Step one: Separate the hair into six sections, three on each side (I divided the halves into thirds vertically). Braid each section, they should basically align one over the other in a vertical line behind your ear. Repeat on both sides.
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7056/6921808599_552bd694e3.jpg
Now that you've got six braids, take the uppermost one from each side. cross them under your chin.
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7183/6921808843_3b9220198a.jpg
Take the middle braid from each side. Weave it over or under the first braid, and then cross under your chin. Basically if the braid you are crossing just went over, then you will go over it. If it just went under, the new braid will go under it. This way they are alternating over/under.
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7189/6921808925_c6eb07ca41.jpg
Continue with the last braid on each side, and then continue this pattern with the outermost strand until you run out of hair.
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7207/6775693922_bccf74a560.jpg
Just below where the top two strands crossed below your chin is where your mouth will go.
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7186/6775693988_8e56c45be7.jpg
Lift the "beard" from under your chin, and pull the braid looser at the top where indicated, taking advantage of the slack at the top of the "beard." place over your lower face. Tada! What marvelous facial hair!

I know, I know. It's great. A viking would be proud. But I wanted more. I wanted a beard that I didn't have to hold up. So I whipped out the bobby pins and tried again. Here is the beard number two:
First, I rebraided the six sections, tightly, and tied them off with a band (they need to be tighter for the pins to hold)
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7045/6921844849_660395cfcd.jpg
Next, cross the top two braids, directly under your nose. Use a U-shaped pin to pin them in place. (I basically weaved the pin in and out of the braids like a sewing pin)
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7064/6775729876_ecba21b16f.jpg
Then cross the middle braids directly below the chin and pin in place. The same side should be on top as for the "mustache." The "mustache" ends should go under the one on bottom under your chin, and over the piece on top under your chin.
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7053/6775730338_9b3f5cea53.jpg
Next pin the braids to each other over your cheeks.
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7039/6921846019_9dc796c016.jpg
Add the last braid on each side in the same manner as the second, not forgetting to pin the braids over the cheeks.
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7050/6921846463_41475ec74b.jpg
At this point, my outer braids (from the mustache) were rather short, so I had just enough to weave them to the middle and tie hem together.
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7185/6921846823_0712d3dbe4.jpg
So I pulled one of the braids through the loop so the middle pieces weren't both "over" or "under"s, I suspect I may have messed something up here because I don't think they should have been but they were, and then I flat four stranded the rest of the beard in the same way as the six strand, in front of that little tuft. I pinned the tuft down to the back of the beard, and viola!

Thank you everyone! I'm not sure if looking good in a beard is a good thing though, haha.

Ok, so I think I got it. It was a lot more difficult than I expected, and I had a lot of trouble with the pins, which I can't seem to manage. It's very messy, but I'm proud.
