View Full Version : A pencil in my head-my 1st (bad) bun!

So, I know this is a stupid thing to post & most people won't find it interesting, but I'm so proud of myself! I've been envying all the pretty hair sticks, forks and pins, telling myself I can't justify buying something I will not use. I really do prefer my hair down anyway, but I've been obsessed with these-especially the wooden ones. Today I just decided instead of my home-ponytail, why not see if I can do it? I've never done anything other than a ponytail for full-up hair. I did it twice with a random pencil, and each bun (looks really silly, btw) stayed put. I still have the eraser sticking out. I just don't want to use a writing implement in dry hair again because I feel like I had to force it in a bit, and who knows what unearthly damage I caused...nonetheless...me...with a sort of bun

That's great! You might try getting some chopsticks from an Asian market and practicing with them for a bit. I know you feel though. It took me a while to get proficient with them too!
Congratulations!!! It's not silly at all! :cheese:
Your hair in your profile pic is GORGEOUS by the way!!!

Good for you!
P.s.
As of now, you are my new hair role model (I don't use idol, it sounds...weird to me :))

Little kids' chopsticks! They aren't ridiculously long, and they are cheap. Some of them are training chopsticks that have some apparatus where they are stuck together, but some are just normal shorter chopsticks. They sometimes also have cute kitties and stuff.
We have almost the same hair type but yours is a little curlier. I'm telling you, buns are a whole new world. After I washed my hair (or just wet and conditioned it, or whatever) if I know I am going to wear it up, I can oil it more heavily. It is like a mini-deep treatment, wherever I go!

That IS exciting news! Now you get the tough choice of deciding on your first hairstick hairtoys! Oh, the choices . . ..

Yay! Congratulations. I love putting my hair up with pencils, BTW -- it means wherever you go, you can always do an emergency updo.
cheers

Oh no, it's not a stupid thing to post about and I DO find it interesting. I think a pencil was my very first hairstick! Next time take a picture, okay?

Figuring out how to put your hair up is very liberating! Good for you.

Congratulations on your first successful updo! I bet it looks great with all that curl! By the way, I still use pencils now and then. I would love a really smooth mechanical pencil that I can use for a hair stick. I do Suduko every day when I stop for coffee. Would love to be able to keep the pencil in my hair instead of my back pocket!

Thanks for the replies and support! I really do need to find some kiddo chopsticks to practice. My husband hates my hair up, but he's not home much anyway, and it's my hair. I'm too embarrassed to take pictures of what I created yesterday-we're talking the simplest of simple bun, and it's not too recognizable-it's just the fact that a stick can make my hair stay up comfortably that amazed me. When it looks sort of like it should, I will try to take pictures . Hair, although usually a PITA for me, has become somewhat fun lately!

Congrats! What you did makes sense: I bought some cheap hairsticks already and I won't even be able to really use them for awhile!

I used a ballpoint pen to hold up my hair today, but it didn't work for very long and I had to switch back to my comb once I found it!

I actually have a sneaking suspicion that basic #2 wooden pencils really make the best hairsticks (when sharpened). I put one in the other day when I was in a rush--loose cinnabun, flyaways and halo everywhere--and it held like a rock. No slippage, no pulling...I was in a state of mild shock. ;)
But decorated/'proper' hairsticks are nicer than an old #2 with a nubby eraser, so the scale often shifts. I do really like having a writing tool at my disposal, however.
walkinglady: When I am in school, I find these are great for on-the-go. I like them because they are simply and black and also pretty inexpensive (I pay about $2 for a pack of five). They come black and gray with different colored accents. Very smooth and unobtrusive, at least in my experience, and hold pretty well. http://www.bicworld.com/inter_en/bdd/product_writing.asp?product_id=172

I kind of like the idea of having a writing implement at my disposal, too! I don't know if I'll ever master this up-do thing, but I love having an alternative option to the ponytail. I found some really pretty children's chopsticks online (thanks for the suggestion, Riot Crrl)-I actually bought 2 sets of children's (golden moon on black laquer, clover green/wood), and 2 sets of the smaller regular ones (burgundy with small gold dragonflies and a nice bamboo weave-not too practical, I know). I figured I can use them for projects for the kids if I can't make them work in my hair, but the great thing is I got basically 8 practice sticks for $6.50-of course, I had to add shipping to that, but I had no clue where to go locally to find these things!

That's great - it's always exciting finding you can do an updo for the first time.
I read the title of your thread though and initially thought you'd stabbed yourself in the head with your pencil - ouch!!
I hope you get to treat yourself to some nice hairsticks.
