View Full Version : I screwed up my hair :(

A few weeks ago, I attempted to cut in face-framing layers and they look *horrible*. The rest of my hair is a little past APL now and the front layers start at my jawline. It doesn't look bad when it's straightened (I straightened it a few days ago to see if it was just the waviness of my hair making it look bad or if I really did a terrible job), but my hair seems to get pretty wavy when it doesn't have the weight pulling it down. So the rest of my hair is pretty much 1b and these front bits are about 1c or wavier. You can't tell they're face framing layers - it just looks like some kid hacked of the front of my hair.
On top of that, I did a baking soda rinse the other day to see what would happen, and now my hair feels like straw even after 2 washes. I'm really frustrated with my hair right now and really just want to chop it off to shoulder but don't want to lose the length. I don't know what to do other than wear it up all the time until it grows and I can trim it all one length again. :(

Get other peoples opinions because you will always be harder on yourself then the rest of the world.
Talk to a professional about your layers and see what they suggest. Maybe look for a picture of the layers you want and see if they can get you there.
I grew from hardly able to fit it in a pony tail to almost bra strap length up in sloppy buns, pony tails and away from where I had to see it because I didn't want to shave my head but I hated every single freaking piece of my hair.

Did you do an acv rinse after the baking soda? It's supposed to help balance your hair's ph out afterwards. You may want to try it if you haven't already and do a deep condition of some sort. Baking soda made my hair feel the same way when I tried it :(

I didn't do an ACV rinse :( I'll do one in the morning after I wash this SMT out of my hair. Thank you both for the advice!

Try to ask a professional about what you can do about your layers.

Please post a picture, there are people here who can come up with the ideas on how to fix it :)
I think face framing layers look flattering on almost anyone :) especially those around chin!
Never tried baking soda, and now I don't think I will...
ACV is so good, so sticking to it!

Never, never do Baking soda rinse without ACV rinse. Also how much baking soda to water did you use? Be careful not to use too much Baking soda, it may be two teaspoons to a cup of water( but I am not 100% sure):)

I'll post a picture after my hair dries. As for the ratio of baking soda to water, I used 2 tbsp per 3 cups of water. I did an SMT last night - washed it out this morning and put ACV in. I'm hoping that will help.

Whatever you do, do NOT chop it off!! Use a good clarifying shampoo and then apply a conditioning mask ( olive oil, regular deep conditioner) etc and then put your hair in a shower cap, dampen a towel with HOT water and then wrap this around the shower cap. Leave for 30 mins then rinse with warm water and give it a final rinse with cold. Hot oils always work for me! Continue to do this as frequently as preferred and WAIT for the hair to grow out NOMORE cutting because then it'll be worse for you in the long run (regrets) x

Lol, now it just hates me back. But I love it. And no matter how much I like it short or with bangs I will always TRY to remember that I am happy about it for five minutes and then I really hate it and myself for not letting The Naughty Mess just do it's thing.

Talk to a professional if you can, they should be able to fix it. If you don't want to do that, wear your hair up for a bit and remember that hair grows and it won't look bad forever ;)
I once let my boyfriend at the time cut my fringe. BAD IDEA! It was SO sort, looked STUPID and was really hard to pin out of the way because it was so short :s

Here are some pictures. Like I said, it would look better straightened or blowdried but I'm not willing to do that every day.

...I don't think they look bad?
And I'm sure that a professional could even them up (if you felt they were crooked) for around $5-$10, tops.

ACV doesn't balance the pH of hair, it balances the acid mantle. The acid mantle is a thin film on the scalp skin, and all of the body's skin, actually. It's a combination of sweat and sebum that creates the acid mantle. One can look this up online and find out a whole lot more.
Sounds to me that the OP may not have conditioned in the wake of performing a Baking Soda hair wash, which is a form of "clarifying" the hair. Clarifying removes all product, hard water minerals, sebum, dirt, detris -- anything that's on the top of the hair's cuticle. Clarifying strips all this off, and if one fails to replace what's been removed in the form of conditioning, then one is left with hair that feels like straw. In short, this is a successful hair wash except that we have a situation of little enough conditioner on the hair.
Conditioner bonds with the hair's cortex. Without adequate conditioning, hair is left "naked."
Wash your hair per normal and do a good conditioning session, and consider oiling the hair length (length only).

ETA:
FYI: All shampoos and conditioners tend to leave the hair and scalp skin in a state of a more alkali condition (or base as it's named on some pH scales - you can see pH scales online), and a vinegar hair rinse whether ACV or a white vinegar diluted concoction will pH balance the scalp skin. Apple Cider Vinegar is not good for blonde tones of hair to use as consistent use over time can impart a reddish tinge to the hair. Apple Cider vinegar has the "mother" in it: apple pulp (such as Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar). This "mother" is malic acid which is beneficial for scalp skin and the acid mantle as it tweaks the pH balance a bit more acidic. Most heads do a little better being a trace more acidic, or more neutral than alkali, around 6.8 on the pH scale. END ETA

I actually did condition afterwards. Then I did CWC the next day. It was weird. I clarified again last night to get whatever was still in my hair out (felt like buildup) and did an SMT.
Haha these comments to the face framing layers are not what I was looking for. Maybe I just think it looks bad because I know I did it myself.

I just replied but it didn't go through :(
I did condition after the baking soda rinse. Then I did CWC the next day. The day after that (yesterday), it felt like I had buildup somehow so I clarified and did an SMT. It feels cleaner. I think I need to stop doing so much to it.
Is it okay to do an ACV rinse with ACV that doesn't have the mother in it, or is that something that's super important?
I also must say this isn't the response to the pictures I was expecting, haha. I appreciate the compliments though. Maybe I just think it looks bad because I know I did it myself.

SMT should help the feel of your hair. ACV can have a side benefit of helping hair to feel better, but that's not its primary goal.
For baking soda clarifying hair washes, that's a good ratio.
Never combine ACV (or any vinegar) with baking soda. This is a drain de-clogger. Always dilute each one well, and it's okay to use serially, one after the other and rinse each out before applying the next.

To me your hair looks shiny and in good condition. Layers are fine, too, don't worry. In two weeks you'll get used to them and they will blend with the rest of your hair. I cut my own layers too and they always look terrible the first few days. I once heard a saying - a new haircut is like a popped zit - they both need one week to look ok. Or something like that :)

I have heard that others have had a negative experience with Baking Soda "clarifying" hair wash. I have no idea what happened for you if you did condition as part of the same hair wash. I have never had a negative experience with this kind of hair wash. I'm one of the people that has promoted it in the past, and now I hardly ever promote it. I wish I could see what people are doing and the apparent bad results that ensue. I just wonder what's going on.
I myself, when I do this hair wash, combine my choice of shampoo with the baking soda. I do not combine baking soda and water. (maybe that's the difference?)

heidi w. - That is a difference that might be notable (shampoo vs. water). It might also make a difference whether or not it is fully dissolved. I dissolved the baking soda in hot water. It was still kind of hot (not scalding of course) when I poured it on my hair. Maybe the smaller particles of the dissolved baking soda penetrated the raised cuticle because of the hot water? I don't know if that's possible, but just a thought.
Seeshami - it's hard to imagine your hair as a "naughty mess." I think it's absolutely lovely!

Aww you guys are all so sweet. You should meet him though. He's pretty evil. I'm going to have to start taking pictures of The mess when he's being himself so every one will believe me.
P.S. I think your hair looks lovely. Give it time. I have learned to much, to fast is just as bad as to little, to late.

Baking soda does HORRIBLE things to my hair, too. I needed several deep moisturizing treatments to get it back to normal afterwards, and make it less prone to static.
I think the face framing layers look fine. A stylist could probably blend them in w/ the rest of your hair a bit more if you wanted that, but I like them the way they are.

The pics you posted were too small, I could not see much, but all what i saw is great shiny looking hair, lol, don't worry about those layers, they will grow out in few months, I think you need to slow down on how you are taking care of your hair now, let it rest for few days as doing so many treatments in a short period of time is just too much as far as I see it, I have damaged hair and trying to grow a health hair and when I initially came to this forum i did everything at once, BS, ACV, henna, conditioners, CWC, CW and you name it, then I slowed down and my hair now is looking a little better.
Just do not take it hard on yourself, I wish I have 20% of your hair, go check my hair and then you will feel way better, LOL :D

The face-framing might look a little better if they were blended down the sides a bit so that they flow into the rest of your hair instead of being a separate chunk.
They should grow out pretty fast, though, and it doesn't look so bad that you absolutely must get them fixed.

Id do a deep condition of your hair and if the rest is long enough to put up, do just that and wait a few months, it might look better once its grown a bit. We live and learn!

Though your pictures are small, it doesn't look that bad. For over a year I cut haphazard "layers" into my wurly hair; it looks much better now that I've had them fixed, but the unevenness was much more obvious to me than to anyone else. If you don't want to go to a professional, be patient and they will grow out ! :)

It doesn't look that screwed up to me. In fact, it looks just fine. I'd stop cutting or having it cut now, though. Just put it up and out of the way. Let no more scissors go near it for a long while!

Heidi W.- Thank you for the clarification! When I used the Baking Soda rinse it was with water (I don't use shampoo) and I think my aversion to it is because it clarified way too well. Even after an acv rinse and a deep conditioner and leave in conditioner it took a while for my hair to go back to normal. I naturally have really dry super curly hair so I generally have moisture problems.
I don't think those layer look bad at all! I like them! If you feel they are too short I would agree with earlier posters and say just let them grow out a bit and see how you like them then.

You can hide the face framing for a while while it grows out by twisting it and pulling it back with some butterfly clips.
