For two years I have planned our family vacation to Disney and a Disney cruise, as the same time growing out my hair.
On our last trip, it was about 3 inches past my shoulder, but with the heat and wearing a hat all day...it wasn't pretty!
So I had grown it out to almost my waist, had an app't to get a perm last Saturday, I was really hoping for curl but would have accepted more body. My hair is very fine but plentiful.
At the sink, he asked my stylist to take some off before he started rolling. I couldn't see what they were doing, I did hear my stylist say,"No, not there...I'll go here" I couldn't see since there wasn't a mirror, I just put my faith in them. I asked for long loose curls...
Needless to say, when I saw the final style I wanted to cry. He took 7 inches off and it just sits at my shoulder now....and there's no curl or body...:(
I called to let them know how unhappy I was with it, and he wants me to come in on Saturday so he can look at it. He says he'll reperm if it didn't take.
If he perms it now, at the length I have it will be even shorter! Plus I'm worried about over processing it now!
Has anyone permed longer hair? He didn't use spiral rollers, just the regular perm rollers in the mauve colour.
I am wondering what I should tell him when I go in. I feel a bit foolish, because when on the phone with him I actually started to cry a bit shudder:

I suggest you go see a different stylist. But first, do some sort of deep conditioning treatment. You might need both moisture and protein after the perm. Try an SMT (snowy's moisture treatment, it is 1 part clear aloe gel, 1 part honey and 4 parts conditioner, microwaved for 15 or so secs so the honey does not lighten the hair. Leave it on for as long as you can stand, a minimum of 30 mins, then rinse. I do not suggest re perming your hair, especially if it is fine. Try no heat curling methods (rag curls, sock curls, braids combed out) to get body, 1 perm is damaging enough but 2 especially this close together might fry your hair. Tell the stylist exactly why you are upset, voice your displeasure and do not feel bad. You paid him to do what you wanted to your hair, you have a right to tell him what he did wrong. For now, try babying your hair for a few months, at least at this shorter length, the perm will be easier to grow out. Best of luck!:)

It's really hard to get 1A hair to curl.
Please don't re-perm. You will regret it. Your hair will start breaking off like crazy. I've seen it happen on 2 different people over the years.

If your hair fine you might have a bit more luck than me, but in my experience all perming does to really straight hair is kill it.
If you really want curls try this instead: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FV-YO46E8Y.
Might be a pain, it'll need doing every night, but you won't have major damage.

I've seen perms turn out really well -- one of my good friends has silver hair past her shoulders w/ a perm that looks sooooo natural and pretty, and I actually prefer HER permed curl pattern to my natural pattern HAHA -- but if you plan to grow much past APL I wouldn't perm. At shoulder/APL, a lot of the damage gets cut off regularly, but the cumulative damage is too much at longer lengths. I would definitely pay for a high end salon in this case to evaluate whether your hair could take a re-perm.

I did an at home one years and years ago, when I had 1a hair too, and it didn't hold at all.
I am sorry they cut so much off your hair. :( i would make a formal complaint, and then not go there anymore. Don't reperm it. If you still want curls then I would go buy those foam curl thingys and wash your hair, put on some kind of hold product (aloe vera gel or curl cream whatever) and sleep in the all night. They are actually pretty comfy and they do give curls, although for how long will depend on your hair, heat, humidity etc, but far less damaging than re perming it.

My freshman year of high school, I had gotten my hair chemically straightened. It lasted til the very end of the school year, about ten months. Before the perm, my hair was super curly and frizzy. After the perm, it toned down a bit.

Sorry to hear, I hate when stylists disregard what the customer is asking for and ruin people's hair! I've had a terrible curl perm experience long time ago.. then I got two straight perms with better experience and nice results however they damaged my hair and caused breakage.. I think body wave perms would be nice, a friend of mine had one (only wavy ends) but you have to go to a professional stylist who has experience or else you never know what you will get. Also bring a pic of how you want it to look. I suggest you go somewhere else and do not re-perm until you know that you're comfortable with the stylist's skills. Good luck!

Thank you everyone!
I really don't want to reperm now...it would be sooo short!
I've tried everything to curl my hair, it just falls out. I have tons of sponge rollers, hot rollers, curling iron, sock method etc... I don't have enough natural body in my hair to hold it.
My first perm was at 2 years old....my grandmother decided my hair was too limp! My Mom was not impressed...
In the 80's I had the curly wash and go style, it would take but I'd have the rollers in for 40 minutes then it wouldn't be very healthy even though it was curly.
When we go on vacation, we'll be out all day and I was looking for something that would look good even when I was hot and sweaty, or at the pool etc... My straight hair always seems to look unbrushed and unstyled...even though I've spent an hour on it!
Well, I'll see what happens tomorrow! Thanks again!

I got a perm nearly 12 months ago and it is still in. I loved the fact that it gave me body and made my limp hair really good. I do have flat hair to my ears now but hay it is cool.
As for the perm not taking and them hacking so much off - ask for your money back and go find a great A+++++++++ stylist. You should at least be able to get some loose curls which shouldn't reduce the length to much.
Good luck.
