In general, I figured that the more hair you had the larger your bun is. However, that is not the case for me. Since I grew out the damaged hair, my circumference in my ponytail went down and my buns are no longer as large, even though my hair is longer than it was before I started to grow out the damage. I don't like having small buns (at least in my hair!)

My solution is usually a rolled sock bun, however, it gets so heavy at times that I get a headache from it. *sigh*

Do you have any buns you like to do that are large and make your hair look thicker and maybe even longer?

I hope that made sense. :D

Hmm.. you could do two braids on damp hair the night before and then comb it out just a little. That gives super volume. Then, just very gently twist for the updos so they take up more space.

Hairagami, magic bun, eazibun bun. Anything you wrap the bun around will "pouf" up your bun. They make a bun donuts that are a foam like stuff that is super light weight, so that might help. The other big pouf not a real bun I can think of is this thing:

However, with the pouf not a bun you would end up rolling under a lot more probably.

Braided bun, as long as you put the braid really flat on top of your head =)

This one sure makes my hair look longer than it was:

I like pin roll buns (http://vimeo.com/14688883) since they are very pretty and leave lots of room for creativity. When I make a flower-shaped bun like the one in the video, it gets much bigger than a fully-rolled sock bun but doesn't have the weight of the hair donut.

doing a curl "set" in the hair and lightly gently twisting as opposed to tightly twisting is my secret to big deceptive buns

I like to do a sort of lazy wrap bun and then adjust the coils and spread them out a bit so that it looks like I have more hair. It's very effective. I get about twice the bun size that I used to get from a regular cinnamon bun. I don't like to use bobby pins or elastics (just forks, sticks and flexis) so this is a good solution for me.

Here's a pic of the "spread out" bun:

and compare that to a normal twisted cinnamon bun on me:

You can get a hair donut from Sally's. You put your hair through the hole and than pin it over the donut. :) it may be a bit damaging because you need to use a hair elastic and pins, but it looks cute especially for special occasions and it's not heavy at all!!!

I have a few hair donuts I have made, that is how I make my sock buns and rolled sock buns.

For big buns I recommend these:

non-braided: big bun, roman style (http://youtu.be/QngbZKjSxtM)

braided: Oval bun (http://youtu.be/ysyq-w96AWg)

Hope this is helpful :D

I agree on the oval bun, my APL hair looks so much in an oval bun :D also really good is the seashell bun, probably looks twice the size of the cinnabun equivalent on me.

I hope you don't mind me adding the vortex bun and the braided beehive. In general, 2 or more braids wrapped around gives that longer look.

This is exactly what I do.

OMGosh that is the bun I "invented" awhile back and took a pic at Christmas...here: (except I twisted my hair and had to go around a few more times due to my length)

Wow I love the roman style big bun. I cant wait until my hair is long enough to be able try to put it in all the different buns & styles... got a bit of wait yet (only just shoulder length can finally manage a short ponytail:)) but I love seeing others long hair in gorgeous updos.
