I couldn't find a similar thread, please let me know if there is one. I think the bun is amazing. You never know exactly how long someone's hair is just by looking at their bun. Have you ever seen the moment when someone lets down their bun and you see their beautiful length? Anyways, I'm very interested in seeing some pictures of your buns and lengths!

That should say 2012, not 2011! Oops.

Your hair is just simply beautiful. I love the red and how well you can keep the texture. very nicely done with the bun.

Thank you, jojo!

Your braided bun was beautiful too and shows how deceiving some buns can be..which is a very good thing! The braided bun gives the impression that you have hair longer than you actually have, which I love:D!

A lot can depend on length and thickness.

But you can also "fake it" by not twisting too tightly, or choosing a bun that helps spread out the hair so that it appears there's more there...like in jojo's braided bun.

yay!! I love threads like this! I'm always curious as to how long one's hair must be in order to achieve a particular updo! Ok, my hair is only just long enough to put in a bun in the past few weeks so I'll have to take pics and post later.

Thank you. The dye is Vampire Red from Manic Panic. My hair is not bleached. So not really any damage done by the color :)

How long did you hair have to be to do that bun? Mine is maybe an inch short of BSL (it reaches the top of the band instead of the bottom, so to some, it is BSL) and i can hardly do a normal bun...beautiful hair btw.

Thank you, I think it was around 27 inches or so for me that I could do it, about MBL on me... I heard if you have really thick hair you need more length in order to do buns. Mine is not that thick and I have a ton of layers. The secret to my figure 8 bun looking so big is that it was set in heat free curls before I put it up in that bun, so it looks bigger and also the layers stay tucked in more neatly.

Yes, I saw TorrinPaige's tutorial on it. If it's sideways it's called an infinity bun I think. Sometimes mine come out crooked like 45 degrees lol.

Ah yes. I'm nerdy enough that I thought making an infinity sign with my hair would look cool. I think I might need a few more inches, but I will look up the tutorial anyway.

Oh, yeah my hair is very thick...the only bun i can do is the basic one, and it requires 2 hair sticks to hold right...this is on a good day. I have long layers so they do not affect my updos. Your bun does look huge, so thick but sleek, very nice. OT i know but, what heat free curling method did you use?

No problem. Manic Panic Vampire Red. I love this color so much. I love it even more because it's the first red color that has ever stuck in my hair before. This picture was taken well over a month after I last dyed my hair. Though my roots are obviously showing a bit, that's mostly because I was washing my roots and not my length, hence the uneven fade.

What I love the most though is that it shows up so well even though I have dark brown hair.

currently my favorite method of heat-free curling is pin curls on the top section of my head and then the rest in two rag curls using two pieces of pantyhose so it looks like pigtail buns in a way... it's very easy to sleep on

(For anyone wondering about the weird wave pattern: It's braidwaves that were worn in a nautilus all day. I was going to wear it down but I forgot that kitchens cooking giant turkeys and enough trimmings to feed a battleship tend to be quite hot. :o )

Habioku, I just love that bun... :-)

..and I love this thread! I love seeing everyone's buns.

Well, I just had to try this - for science! I did these just now.

Cinnabun:

Lazy wrap:

http://www.longhaircommunity.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=7777&pictureid=126550

I was so surprised I could do a lazy wrap!! Granted, I took it down immmediately, so I don't know how long it would have lasted (aluminium knitting needle doesn't make for the most secure hair stick either..)

And here is my length:

http://www.longhaircommunity.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=9457&pictureid=126551

It's a bit below(!!!) BSL. (I am 5'7" tall and BSL is 27.5 inches, give or take.) Braid waves. Don't mind my ends, they are slowly being snipped off (and somehow braidwaves make them look extra ratty!)!

All the photos are so inspiring. I want so to reach knee length someday.

I keep my hair in braids and twists to control tangles. So I just bun up all the braids or twists. It helps with my fine delicate hair. Length is in signature.

zombi: I know it as "elling bun" (variation).
You sction your hair half up (third up) and braid it down. Normal English braid. Than you add the rest of your hair from the left and from the right so you have three strands for another big English braid. Try to start not to low on your head. A higher base looks better, I think.
Braid it down. Than you roll up the braid und slip it under the part from the half-up.
It is a bit difficult to explain that in english but I hope ypu can understand this. It is easy. The ficcare is only decoration. Normally the bun holds with only few pins because it is fixed by the half-up.

Cirafly, I took a section of hair from the front on each side of my part, braided the sections, and then put all of my hair into a braided bun :) I'm a fan of braided buns of all sorts because I have layers that stick out of most other types of updos! And thank you :)

Eirelin, that hair sword is awazing! I need one of those. And the hair looks great too. Everyone's hair looks so great :)

I wanted to add my pics too since I'm only just learning buns apart from the regular cinnabun attached with just a hair band. That I've been doing since forever.
What I'm reeeally missing is some hair sticks and other things like that. I have none of those. For these buns I'm using just a bamboo barbeque skewer cut in half. Yeah, how fancy...

There's a knot bun, a cinnabun and a braided one. (The heads in the messy knot bun pic are both me, just one of them is from the mirror.)

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk102/Ocelan/IMG_7565-buns.jpg

And here's the length or some kind of picture of it. It's not looking too great there and is a bit oily in the lengths...

Ocelan: why are your hair ends sticking out in the length photo? Did you just wash your hair, or did the camera catch you in motion somehow? I was just curious?

heidi w.

Ocelan
February 22nd, 2012, 10:54 AM
I think they're sticking out since my hair's been in a bun all day so the ends have been tucked inside the bun and probably bent like that. I also have some layers in the bottom and I've only just lately started taking care of my hair properly so the ends might not be in the greatest shape even though I haven't seen many split ends there.
There shouldn't be much motion going on in the picture even though Iäm not sure since I had a really hard time taking this picture with the help of a mirror.

Tea Garden, I like your choice in hair stick when your hair is up. Here's why. It presents a nice "contrast" to the color of your hair. I consider this contrast a key element when choosing a decoration for the day. Especially if I'm going somewhere. Being mindful of being a positive Hair Ambassadortress can help combat the various myths about having long hair.

I actually went today and got two wooden hairsticks. One is lighter and other little darker ( the idea is to wear them bouth at same time ). They bouth have very nice delicate wood coloring and actually bouth kinda repeat the colours i have in my own hair. I thing that make it look elegant, But i might be wrong there again :D

But i can understand what you are saying about wearing something that show up as well, i just need to save some money for those ^^

I actually have the same opinion when it comes to taking photos and concerns the background or the color of tops, for example. You don't want your hair blending in the wood grain of a door or wall. Hard then to discern where your hair ends and the wall/background begins.

heidi w.

Yup, I agree. That's why I take pictures of my dark hair against light colors, like white. I've also transitioned to taking them outside, as it gives a better idea of texture and color. However, I think I need to start employing DH to take the pictures as my delay timer on my camera is not turning out great. The camera isn't focusing on my hair correctly and ends up fuzzy. Or maybe I just need to play with the settings instead of putting it on auto setting.

Yes, indeed! Contrasting colors are a real godsend. Then a person can really SEE the hair to its best advantage (provided , of course, that the photo is reasonably clear and taken in good lighting).

Taking a quality photo matters. I was told this in relation to recordings submitted for auditions or competitions, as well. It's what people see, and a way of communicating nonverbally regarding one's hair.

I couldn't agree more. I gave a member advice to cut her hair 5 inches, based on the photo she posted, because it really looked like it needed it.

I was amazed when she posted another batch of photos that were SO MUCH BETTER than her original photograph. I mean, it was like night and day...and I felt badly about my advice, since she surely didn't need to chop off 5 inches!

I think it all depence on what kind of backgrownd as well and what you want to achieve with the photo. I have the best photo of my hair taken while i was on the grownd and my hair was on the maple tree's leaves. And once again the colours of fallend down trees and my own had this beautiful playing together. I loved that at some parts almoust didn't know where the hair ended and leaves started :D

But yes if you want to realy show off the hair and hairstyle in all its glory, then different backgrown is the way to go ^^ Haha it's funny actually. This is the same thing in the dog show. If your dog is white colour- no way you should have anything white on yourself and light as rather go into darker colours and not outbright the dog :)

That is certainly true. I don't really have to worry about that where I work.

Hairtoys that blend to the colour of your hair (or are generally less obtrusive) are handy for strict professional work environments. :)

Tea Garden, I like your choice in hair stick when your hair is up. Here's why. It presents a nice "contrast" to the color of your hair. I consider this contrast a key element when choosing a decoration for the day. Especially if I'm going somewhere. Being mindful of being a positive Hair Ambassadortress can help combat the various myths about having long hair.

heidi w.

Heidi, it's like sometimes you read my mind. (Get out of there!! :D) I always wear light-colored hairsticks, mostly natural oak because they look better against my brown (cool-toned) hair. I particularly agree with the last statement which I've underlined.

P.S. Tea Garden, your hair is lovely!

Threadjacking over.

Lipbalmbabe : no definite answer for this question, I have never been actively trying to grow my hair, until I joined here 3 years ago. My hair just grows, I trim more or less from time to time, that's it. I've never had any haircut per se (other than staight across - something that's meant to shape the hair, cut some signficant amount of hair) since my teenage years.

No codes come up when I "hover" over the photobucket photo with my mouse. I have tried posting the photos to Photobucket, then in the thread using INSERT IMAGE icon, which asks me to post the URL from Photobucket into a "script" (separate dialog box), and then click it to accept it, and all I get repetitively is Red X's.

When you click on a picture on photobucket a new screen comes up. On the right side of the screen is a list of codes. Left click the img code which is the one on the bottom. This will copy the link to your clipboard. Right click in the post and click paste.

Yes. I try to wear it up most of the time, but when it's down everyone mentions how long it looks. Also your hair is so beautiful. The length is stunning.

When I wear my hair down, every other person comments and it slows me down in getting an errand completed. I've had men comment that they think I'm "fertile"! I've been followed home after wearing it down. (That was scary.) I've been harassed by hairdressers to cut my hair and donate it. So, now I just wear it up all the time. That way I'm never bothered. Also, every second or third woman has a comment, whether to me or not. I can hear them talking. I am in the room! Often they comment it's beautiful yet too long. I hear a lot of I once had long hair stories. I listen politely. Lots of people want to know why my hair is this long, or how to grow their hair long. I've given hair seminars in grocery stores, on sidewalks, in cafe shops. I don't anymore. I figure they can learn as I did. Read, read, read. I used to have a better library than I do currently. Some books I've lost too. Most people are nice, but the krankypoos are really annoying. Old women have something to say about my hair, often, too. I've heard every story about Locks of Love and why I should cut my hair. I don't think so. So now, I just wear it up and have no problems. LOL.

WOW, now it's in one post. Thank you. That was super nice!

The hair sticks are a lucky draw. I went to Manhattan, New York City a few years back now intending, which I did, to attend the Opening at The Whitney (art) Museum when an artist did a video art installation, named "Cheese". I was one of the 7 long-haired models in the art video. (Everyone else had waaay longer hair than me since, for one, they're all far taller than me!) Anyhow, I decided to also sight see, and the morning after the Opening awoke near the Asian Art Museum, and in the gift shop found one of the hair sticks. And then a few days later, at an appointment I had at The Madora Hair Salon in Manhattan, NY, I saw the mate in her area where she has hair decoration stuff. Loads of stuff. It was like being in a toy store!! I found the mate entirely by accident, and there is one VERY small difference that is hard to see, so I bought it. I wear these sticks like this because I think it's far prettier to not allow the ends of hair sticks stick out and show. But daily hairstick wear, I allow the pointy end to show. But more special occasions, when the photos are being taken, I don't allow it. I think it's unattractive most of the time, not to mention a thing that can take out someone's eye if I hug them! LOL

FYI, most of my hair sticks are from wood, yet these two are made in metal. Which is nice for when I have to bun wet hair.

@Heidi W

I understand where you're coming from regarding "Read, read, read"..but the trouble is, there is not much out there regarding how to properly care for long hair. Heck, it would appear many folks don't even know how to use a comb or brush properly!

I know back in the day I scoured the SF Public Library for books on long hair and what few books they had were geared for short hair only. The only book on long hair I found was Richard Corson's "Fashions in Hair", which while interesting, didn't really cover basic hair care.

As far as I know Mr. Michael's book is the only one that went in depth about how to care for long hair. I only wish it could have had more chapters and more FAQs!

@Heidi W

Correct. A hair care officionado friend of mine led me to resources. Most of them happen to be hair stylist books showcasing long hair updos.....somewhat fantastical too. I found Dr. Gray, and used to have his hair care book. That is now lost to me, so I only know what I can recall.

Here's a list of books for anyone interested?

Curly Girl (handbook, too) by Lorraine Massey.

Naturally Healthy Hair by Mary Beth Janssen
http://books.google.com/books/about/Naturally_healthy_hair.html?id=zO-NW5ihnv0C
This I consider a Hair Care Bible and must-have book for any long haired person.

The World of Hair by Dr. John Gray
(This is an old book that is no longer published, but if you google it you'll find a number of websites that possess some interesting reading somewhat related to this author, with the actual writer's biases presented, such as a kind of website that seems to be medically based....The book also had lots of neat photos of all kinds of hair problems documented.)

http://books.google.com/books/about/World_of_Hair.html?id=HvCJNwAACAAJ
This link doesn't look like the book I recall, but maybe?

and there's one other book that was a big influence and I can't recall the name, nor do I any longer own the book.

Then there's George Michael's book.

For visual effects and long hair updos there are some old videos that I don't know how a person acquires other than hanging out and looking on eBay and maybe one day the videos will pop up, and then you can bid.

There's a guy named "Patrick Cameron" who did long hair updo videos. There's another guy, but his name escapes me at the moment. Here's an updo video link:

http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=1336947992092
This video sort of doesn't get to the end. Maybe at myhairdresser.com?
Of Note: this video shows the use of a "form" which is pinned in. Also the video shows the sectioning of the hair in graphic, not on the head itself.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePGTE3kkXk4
Patrick Cameron interviewed. He does platform shows at hairshows.
He speaks in the interview of "precision" haircutting. That was established by the influence of Vidal Sassoon.

Patrick Cameron was known for long hair care hairdressing.
(he likes to use forms. That's ok, in my opinion. For us without body, it can help!)

Here's his website, I went inside his website to check it out.
http://www.patrick-cameron.com/collections.html

Then there's the Aquage product line which is a line intended for long hair care. They also did wonderful platform updos and had some gorgeous books showcasing beautiful long hair updos of various sorts. Right now I can't find an example book.

I can't find a single Aquage long hair book with pictures!

One sort of has to pick through stuff to find information. I agree, it is difficult and troublesome.

ETA: There's a really neat book regarding Hair throughout History. Let me see if I can find it.
Well, found this link which looks somewhat interesting, yet not the book I am familiar with.
http://www.hairfinder.com/books/hair_history.htm

This looks very interesting!!
http://black-history.blackvoices.com/2011/01/12/black-history-and-hair/

Well, not finding the book I'm familiar with unfortunately, but there are plenty of other books to choose from concerning this topic of Culture, History and Hair throughout time.

Great thread !

I always find my bun so small ! How do you make it look bigger, other than a sock bun ?
I love buns, but unfortunately, with me being in the military (national guard, one weekend a month), I'm always trying to make mine as small as possible. You can't have hair greater than 3 inches in bulk when it's up in a bun :(
Luckily my hair is not super thick, so i usually put it in a ponytail, braid it, then wrap it in a tight bun and secure with plain black elastics. not very creative or cute, but it's better than having to cut my hair! :)

Thanks! It's cut straight across, but if you were to see it in a braid you'd notice quite the taper. I definitely didn't take good care of the hair that's made it to my ends back when it was at my scalp and in the middle. I'm sure with good hair care you can get long hair!

LOL.

Same here!
Now I tend to wear it down on special occasions only, meets, or fantasyfestivals etc.
