OK, so I am so excited for the release of "The Hunger Games" in March. I haven't even read the books yet (I like to see the movie first, otherwise I go into the movie expecting things, get all disappointed, and can't enjoy the movie for what it is) but the trailers look amazing.

Anyway, Katniss Everdeen, the main character, has this braid as her go-to style, which I am practicing on myself:

My question is this: Katniss has curly hair, so that may be all there is to it, but although the stylist in an interview described this as a French braid, it looks to me more like a Dutch braid.

So, what do you girls think? French or Dutch?

Totally looks like a dutch braid to me. I read the books but I can't remember if it was ever mentioned what kind of braid she wore. :/

OMG they're making a film of it? Where have I been? That's SO exciting!!

From the looks of it I believe it's a dutch braid. In the books they never mentioned the exact braid, just that only her mom knew how to do it because it was a 'special' braid, haha.

On this webpage, the hairstylist just talks about a side braid (http://www.beautyhigh.com/hair/18742/hunger-games-hairstylist-comments-on-katniss-many-braids). (There's another image there too.) It looks like just a dutch braid that starts on one side and goes to the other.

Almost certainly Dutch.

In the pic Arrow provided it looks like a diagonal French Dutch braid.

In the photo mentioned by Stinaroo, it looks like a French Dutch braid.

It looks almost certainly dutch to me. I enjoy CuteGirlsHairstyles tutorial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cljXJzqMvEA) on this one, (although my hair is way to thin to pull it off.)

It looks Dutch and possibly a 5 strand to me. I think most (non LHC) people have only heard of French braids, so that's probably why they said French, so people understood it was an "integrating" braid. To be honest, it's a bit dispointing. The book mentions that it's a braid that only her mother can do and only for special occasions, so I was hoping for something a bit more complex and interesting.

I would have liked to see the back of her head in the second picture in the interview; They mentioned 5 different braid types without mentioning which so it would have been nice to see them.

I love this braid! I've been doing it ever since I saw it on the movie poster, and it's my new go-to hairstyle! :cheese:

Yeah, it does look like there are more than 3 strands involved.

Defiantly Dutch.

Dutch - for me it's in the "direction" of the braid - you can see if the strands were taken from below or folded over.

For the record: sometimes people call all "attached" braids "french" either dutch-french or english-french :)

Her hair looks like it's in a Dutch braided style to me.

As for the books, I thought her day-to-day style was just a regular English braid going down her back, since that's what most non-LHC people think of when they hear the word "braid." I suspect that the movie stylists changed it to a Dutch side braid to make it look more modern and trendy. I hope that they also put the special braided updo that she wore for the ceremony(ies) into the movie.

That's the first picture I've seen of it. Honestly, I'm disappointed. It doesn't feel that "special" to me. In the books her mom had to teach the stylist how to do it because it was unusual.

You know you are an LHCer when you get disappointed about a braid in an upcoming movie.

This. But I don't recognize what 4-strand braid was used.

Definitely looks like a dutch braid to me! I can't wait to see the movie! I would love to see the midnight showing..but I'm not too fond of big gatherings of people, or late nights for that matter. Well I guess I'll get to see it eventually! Personally I'd really like a tutorial for this style if that's not asking too much!:D

There are some great hairstyles coming up. I got the Tribute Guide today and will post pics when I can. In the meantime, here is my first attempt at the "Katniss Braid".

It needs work, but for a first attempt I think it's pretty good. ;0)

Ignore my vote...sometimes it stinks being a newbie. I didn't mean to choose french but can't change it now :o but I am excited to see the movie.

Yep, it seems Dutch to me. It's what the French braid would look like inside-out.

Yep that pic is definitely a dutch braid. I was disappointed, because I was expecting some gorgeous, seriously intricate braid and hollywood gives me a diagonal dutch braid. Pooey.

I would vote for Dutch. I just started the book this week. So excited! I don't know the release date for the movie, but I am hoping to get the book done first.

That definitely looks dutch to me.
It is rather disappointing that this turns out to be the 'special braid'. I'm sure so many LHC-ers could have come up with something really special. Seems the people here know more about braids than these Hollywood hairstylists.

Supposedly instructions from the stylist on the movie set.

LOL, they really are "supposed" instructions, aren't they? Let's just say that is not a very helpful article...

For those disappointed by the braid -- take a look at the "Girl on Fire" hair!

http://www.hggirlonfire.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Katniss-Peeta-and-Cinna.jpg

(the pic is HUGE)

The hair stylist says there are 10 types of plait going on here! Good luck recreating this one! :0)
Katniss is also sporting beautiful hair while wearing the red dress, and it looks like she might have a crown braid when wearing the blue dress.

The pity is, you can't tell there are 10 plaits going on there because the picture's lighting isn't very helpful!

Is the movie based on the trilogy or is it just the first book?

Some people call a Dutch braid an "inside-out French". For a long time I didn't know it had its own name!

To me this picture in the OP looks like a 4-strand Dutch.

The normal braid Katniss wears she does herself, which is what is being shown. The one her mom does I think is the one that is when she is lit on fire, or during the reaping, which if you look at the pictures contains ten braids! Edit: I'm rewatching the trailer and her hair is really intricate during the reaping. I like the side dutch, I'm going to try it soon and see if I can get my hair to go in that direction.

It looks like a Dutch diagonal braid to ME. (As a to-go, I wonder how she can plait so fast. A minute is wayyy too long for me.)
What amazes me is that this is one of the few movies which the characters' hair looks natural! (messy)

Looks Dutch to me. I know some people who think whether the braid is on top or under that it's just called a French braid...

This is my 3 strand dutch. I think Katniss's is four strand, but I'm still figuring that one out.http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c100/LoveFromPumpkin/Photoon2012-02-20at1845.jpg
Edit: Here's the four strand dutch, which I think is closer. Maybe it's even 5? I like the braid though.http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c100/LoveFromPumpkin/Photoon2012-02-20at19212.jpg

That sounds much more logical.
I was disapointed by a Dutch side braid, but if it's her everyday braid, then that's OK. I can believe that someone would do that herself during the games. For a long while, French braids were my standard "get the hair out of my face" style, and a diagonal one would probably stop the tail from flying about everywhere.

Now we need a good picture (and tutorial) of the "special" braid!
