There was a great NYT article about Locks of Love in 2007. They highlighted the bad aspects of the charity as well as better alternatives for donating hair. Things might have changed since then, but what I can tell from the online community, it hasn't.
I wanted to share it, even if it's old, because a lot of my friends donate their hair and it was helpful for them to read this article about their shady practices as well as give them options such as Wigs 4 Kids and Beautiful Lengths. It might help your friends who are deciding to donate their locks, or even those on the board who would like to donate themselves.

Huh. Interesting article. I had no idea most of it just ended up in the trash!

I find it odd that the football player didn't know dreadlocks weren't acceptable for wig making. I don't know, but it seems like a no-brainer to me. Highly matted hair wouldn't be useful.

Really interesting article! It's a huge shame so much of it goes to waste though

I agree, it's a shame that so much of it gets thrown away.

That article is what I send to people who bother me with donation e-mails. Donating hair is a great cause in theory, but reality has to recognized.

I was wondering if that was our Heidi. :rolling:

I hate that people assume that others with long hair are donating it automatically considering what really goes on.

I couldn't agree more, what a waste, it would be better if people knew more about how that type of chairity actually work.

What an interesting article! I'll have to bookmark it for future reference. Luckily, no-one's nagged me to donate my hair so far (it probably helps that I never wear it loose), but it's nice to know there's an article I can direct them to if the situation ever arises.

Hair takes so long to grow and so much love goes into it just for it to go to waste.
