View Full Version : What to do with growing hair?

I'm in the process of growing my hair long, and 've now hit a lenght at which the folded pony, made with an elastic head band, no longer works.

If you have any suggestions for simple styles that might work, please let me know.

The length of the hair at the front (reaches just below my shoulder) prevents me from doing much with it, and the state of my shoulders are now so bad that I'm on full sickleave. So I can't do anything complicated. I don't have the patience either... The cut, quality and amount of hair also limits my options. I can get my bangs into a high pony, but that's about it. Tucks come apart, braids have parts sticking out etc.

Any help is welcome :)

By the way, I don't know what you'd call this lenght...

I would give braids another try, maybe try a folded braid? Can you do a simple hair stick bun? these are easy and great but thicker hair needs lots of length to do them (trust me, i know). Maybe try a crown braid so you do not see the strange sticking up parts because they are pinned to your head?

Twisting up the back and securing with a claw clip is a cute style for that length and not complicated at all.

Well, I guess you might say your hair (some of it) is mid back length.

You might want to try this lace twisted strand crown braid:

Other than that, your other options would be a sock bun, french twist, peacock twist, or perhaps a Gibson Tuck..although you might have difficulties with your layered hair.

Do you ever do just a plain cinnabun held with spin pins? That's what I always do, even back when I had many layers and it always held; only takes a few seconds to do!

Love your length and layers btw - so, so pretty!

I'd say a pony tail put ends on top of your head and secure with barrett let the ends drape over the barrette.

Something I do with mine at this length is the folded ponytail then split the loop in half vertically, making 2 loops pulled left, one right, then put a hair stick or pencil through the loops horizontally.

or split into 4 loops, at North East South and West and use 2 sticks. Covers the hairband and takes 2 seconds :)

The Cheater's Easy Hairstick bun (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myyuEIkHJ9o) starts just like your folded pony, but then the remaining tail is wrapped around the base, the folded loop part is split in half, and a hairstick/pencil anchors the two halves to each side. Very stable, since the hairstick/pencil goes behind the hair elastic anchoring the folded pony.

A cinnamon bun held with a Ficcare-type clip (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iab14njHrhU) is very easy and quick. I use a very cheap one like this (http://www.nicka.com/pinccat/accessory/pinccat-01/hair-pin/p089.html). The clip doesn't have to reach all the way across the bun.

The pencil bun (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0k3dD4qX34) might also be good. You can do it with a hairstick/pencil or you can use a Ficcare-type clip, treating the underneath part as if it were a hairstick and clamping the top over the bun for extra stability. In the immediate aftermath of a rotator cuff injury last summer, I used the pencil bun secured with the above-mentioned cheap clip a LOT.

I'm guessing that your shoulder issues might mean that crown braids aren't a good choice right now, since they involve keeping your arms raised for some time.

Thanks for all your suggestions. It's too long for a peacock twist, and it slips out of the tuck. I'll have a look at them all anyway.

The only claw clip I ever found that was my size just broke, and when I try sticks it slips out. But I'll give them another try, I might be doing it wrong.

Thanks sarah061, and you're right QMacrocarpa.

Peacock twist as spidermom mentioned was my main style at your length; I do so miss that style or a gibson tuck is good too as is a sock bun!

Id call your length just past apl!

Thanks. I used to do a peacock twist over a year ago, but it's no longer possible. It can't get it to stay there, and look good at the same time. The longest tips won't cooperate. I'm getting a trim in a month or so (a year since my last). That might help.
