View Full Version : Shampoo bars - how do you store them?

So, I recently joined the group of highly devoted shampoo bar users :D but I've come across a little, "sticky" obstacle..

After use, how do you guys store wet, sticky bars?

I mean, a little "metal grill" shelf in the shower cubicle would be practical, but since I only SO every 3-4 days, and I'm not the only one using the shower on a daily basis, I'm afraid that, in time, the steam from daily showers might cause the bars to melt..
Any thoughts?

That bugs me, too. I got a metal box for my bar when I bought it, but I just can't put a wet bar into it. So after use I put it somewhere to dry, then turn around to dry on the other side. Then I put a dry bar in its box until the next use. I never leave it in the shower after use.

Oh yes, the turning of the bar :) a returning ritual!

Until now I've left it on the zink to dry.. but a constantly sticky soap spot on the zink is not really my idea on fun

If it's not in direct water spray I think you'll be fine.

Granted I'm the only one using my shower, but my samples last me a long time, even with the occational spray.

My only experience is with CV-bars though. Others might behave differently. And most of mine are aged by the time I get around to using them. Fresh bars are softer and more sensitive.

I leave mine in my shower also, as I am the only one that uses it. It is on a
metal rack to aid in keeping it dry. But when my children come to visit, I just
take it out of the shower and put it in a papertowel till they leave. I only use
CV bars, and they will easily melt if always exposed to moisture. My bars will
get sticky also if I have the house open and it is humid outside. What I have
found to help them last longer is I cut the CV bars in half and store the unused
part in the paper bag it came in, in an airtight container. I onlhy wash once a week
so they last a good bit of time.

I take any shampoo bar/lye based soap out of the shower and place it on a metal rack to dry fully.
I've found, in my experience, overnight guests/family tend to move it into a puddle otherwise and it melts away.
It's worth the extra 10sec to have a bar last months instead of weeks.

Thanks guys :) Seems like a metal rack might do the trick after all!
I also use CV bars (just tried the Babassu and Marsh Mallow tonight actually.. can't stop touching my length! it's sooooo soft.. with a lovely, subtle smell!)

diverbel - good idea cutting them in half.. I'll have to go look for a nice container :D

Neya - I know! Family doesn't really get it
I spent Christmas at my parents' house, and despite having found a remote corner (behind a bathroom plant) to let it dry, my mom chucked it! when I asked if she's seen it, she said that it had looked like trash....... I had to go pull it out of the big trash can. YUK. At least she'd warpped it in some toilet paper....

I have a plastic travel soap holder that I keep mine in. I cut the large bar into thirds and only use a third at a time, let it air dry in the container on the counter for awhile and then put the lid on and keep it under the sink.

I have a cabinet thingy that hangs out next the shower. It's where I keep things that I don't use every day (ACV, shaving cream, deep conditioning treatments, pumice stone) or that I don't want the b/f using (uber expensive milk bodywash, shaving cream, scented soaps, bath oil). It keeps the shower clutter to a minimum. And if the b/f doesn't see something at the moment that he needs it, it becomes invisible or doesn't exist and he's less likely to use it up. That selective blindness on which he blames his inability to pick up a stray sock or candy wrapper, I exploit that to keep him from playing with my stuff.

My shampoo bar lives in there on a wooden soap dish.

I keep mine in a little plastic travelling case for soap bars, and put it on the bathroom shelf away from the shower when I'm done.

My mom makes soap so I know that slimy feeling how the bar gets!
What I found most recently that works is I stood the bar up next to the window in the trim of the shower and it has been good ever since. The soap bar is square so it sits up on its own and doesn't get slimy because there is air all around it and water doesnt pool up around it.
Soooo...keep soap up high not touching anything :]

^ yes! On edge so the larger surfaces dry more quickly.

When I'm traveling, I'll place the bar on a dry washcloth and let it dry some, then wave it around like I'm being attacked by something (and trying to ignore the looks I get- I should travel alone)-and place it in its metal box at the last possible moment before checkout.

If I'm in one place a couple days, I prop it up on an edge in the metal tin. (Like altiods, sucrets or celestial seasonings travel tea tins.) I wil leave it out in the main room in hopes of drier air.

I actually remove the soap bar from the tub entirely and place it on the sink. I just let it dry over the day, and that's how I prevent them from becoming all sticky. It was just the easiest thing to do, and since the shower area retains the most moisture I thought it best to remove it from there. I hope you find something that works, as I'm curious too what would be best.

I cut mine and only use a little at a time to help them last longer. The pieces I am currently using I have in a little plastic container. I actually linked long bobby pins together into a grid and put that in the bottom, looks a little funny but it keeps the soap off the bottom and allows air to circulate around them to aid in drying. They are never slimy and last so much longer with the little 'grid' keeping them high and dry :)

I never bring my grid container into the shower. I take the soap out, use it, and put it back on the grid.

Any soap dish that drains will help preserve the bars.

Soap bar holder but (and this is key to the not having to flip the suckers) I always cut my bars in half and store them on their sides. I can fit two or three in a regular bar holder and they dont get one mushy side.

I cut the bars, a small sliver off when I need it. I remove it immediately from the shower and keep it with some other hair stuff, oils, conditioners turbies. I never leave my stuff in the shower. Too many other people complicating my existence, might drop it into the tub and not fish it out.

I leave it out of the way on top of this small chest of drawers in the bathroom until dry, then put it back in the shoebox I keep all of my other bars in. :)
