Link to the original instructions is here (http://archive.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=40856), on the archived forum. :)

ETA:
| Note... at the beginning, the stick is NOT through any hair, it is just held above the pony.
|
| 1. Hold hair in unsecured pony with left hand.
| Right hand hold a hairstick horizontally above the pony (pointing at 9 o'clock).
| 2. Flip the pony up over the stick, then down on the left side of the head.
| (The tail is now hanging behind the stick on the left side.
| 3. Rotate the stick CW. I usually rotate until it points at 1-2 o'clock position.
| Don't hold the tail firmly when you do this, let it loosen if it wants
| (as long as it's still wrapped around the stick), otherwise it will be too tight.
| 4. Wrap tail loosely in the CCW direction around the whole thing,
| behind the stick. Tuck ends under.
| 5. Pick up the scalp hair and invert the stick like normal
| (From 1-2 o'clock to 7-8 o'clock position). Come up over the loop(s) you made in step 4.
| The stick will keep the loop(s) in place. You may have to loosen these loops
| (that you made in step 4) a bit if it feels too tight.

It's my first attempt at this bun :3

I'm pretty sure this one doesn't work for me. I have one or two too many coils around the flipped part and it ends up rather wobbly.

Any classic+ members with advice about this bun?

Woah Gossamer, your hair looks amazing in that bun!

I think this is a cool bun and something new to add to the usual figure 8 and pencil bun I always do. The only thing is I have so many layers and not enough length so mine looks horribly messy all the time. Here's mine after my first few attempts:

sorry for the huge picture, I kept resizing it but I can't get it to be any smaller : /

The orchid bun is one of my favorites! This one is probably the nicest one I've made...
http://www.forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=8446&pictureid=124359
I make orchid buns with both my wooden hair forks (the three-prong in this picture and a four-prong one) but I can't make them with my two-prong aluminum hair fork or any of my sticks. Is there something special you're supposed to do to hold the hair in place with a lightweight implement, or does my heavy hair just win this battle no matter what I do?

Edit: Sorry that picture is so big. I tried to edit it, but I can't figure out how to make it smaller from the edit screen either :-/

Interesting bun! My hair is not quite long enough to stay there. Here's my pic, but the hair is coming unwrapped at the bottom. I twist the opposite direciton, so I followed the instructions in reverse.

This is a braided Orchid Bun I did today (done in reverse of what the instructions said). I'll do a twisted version soon!

That's lovely! I wish I could get mine to look so wonderful!

Braidied is a great idea. It might eat enough length for me to do this successfully. Beautiful job!

I'm having a hard time getting this one to feel secure... The one I have up right now feels fairly secure, but I took a picture of it, and it looks more like an infinity bun to me, so I think I messed it up somewhere along the line, lol. Will keep practicing!

How funny! I just tried this one for the first time this morning. I think I need more length before this one will work probably. Grow hair, grow!

I tried but my hair isn't quite long enough yet : (

My first attempt at this. My hair is not quite long enough, but it is definitely holding like a rock!

W-O-W, I wish my hair was long enough to do this but unfortunately that won't be for a very long while yet :(

Could anyone tell me how long they believe hair should be in order to achieve this look? I noticed some say that their classic length hair is too long whilst others are saying their hair is not long enough.

& Eirelin: Love the dagger! and I think your hair looks amazing in the orchard bun!

Aw thanks :o I had to make a bunch of them before I got to where they would even stay at all... keep trying, you'll figure it out!

My hair is barely maybe-I-can-call-this-waist-length and I've just been able to make the orchid bun for the past month or so. But my hair is quite blunt at the ends so I have to have relatively long lengths to make most buns work. Maybe the "average" length for orchid buns might be mid-back or the long side of BSL?

Just for reference, my hair is a bit passed BSL and has a straight hemline - I'm guessing I need another 15-20cm before I'll be able to do it.

I tried this bun again, it always used to fall apart on me but i tried it on damp hair and it was much easier to do.

I tried to put the picture in this post...but it didn't work for some reason. I have a picture of an Orchid bun attempt in my braids and buns album ^_^

http://www.flickr.com/photos/healormor/6837022663/ <-- My hair picture. Can't figure out how to post it correctly. For those of you asking about hair length, mine is BSL, somewhat uneven/layered, and it worked pretty well, feels very secure, even though I didn't get it to quite look like the original post.

for me if i braid it first, it stays better in place. When it's unbraided i do not feel as secured with only using a hair stick. I know it isn't looking the same, but i like it :)

I need to give this style a go...

On another note, I really love your hairstick, Sheryl. :inlove:
Where did you get it? :D

Here is mine. :)
I think it looks very much like the figure-8-bun. Maybe I did something wrong, but I followed the instructions step by step... I guess the look is so close, because it is made in a similar way and with fine hair like mine, there is a lot of length left to wind around the base.

I discovered that I could do this bun just last month! Somehow I had assumed I didn't have enough length yet, but I do. Here's one at the end of the day:

Got it on the first attempt! I think this may become one of my go-to buns, it's so secure. Also nice to have a bun where I can put the stick vertically without it jabbing my neck :D

Well I tried it but I don't quite have enough hair to make it look nice. Pardon the upward angle.

Thanks :)! I found the clip in a shop...I probably shouldn't call it a 'Ficcare', because that's a brand, isn't it? ;)

My hair is a little short for a nice orchid bun, but I like it regardless. :)

This is so pretty!!! I saw this a while back and couldn't figure it out. Today I got it, but my hands still get a bit tangled with the flipping and wrapping. I'm still playing with it and don't have a pic yet, but it looks awesome with a squiggly.

One thing I like about learning new buns is the great arm workout I get :D

Love the bun, but my hair seems to be a little too short for it (around BSL), because the ends unwrap every time I do the bun. I'll definitely keep this one in mind though! :D

This was my favorite bun when my hair was between BSL and waist. I am looking forward to doing it again, almost to APL, less than an inch to go. Grow, dammit!
