View Full Version : Post how your natural hair color changes in light

Hi everyone,

I thought it'd be fun as well as inspiring to see how natural hair color looks different in various amount of light/lack of light.

This would extra awesome to see with long hair (alas, I'm not there yet).

Also, As Henna color naturally and easily changes in sunlight, I'm thinking:

I'd like to mainly use this thread to show how natural hair color looks in daylight/nightime/etc.

I posted the below photos in a different thread, but will re-use them to kick off this thread.

Here are photos of my black hair (with some silver hair) taken with seconds/minutes of each other (Note: the middle shows some henna on the bottom half of my hair which I had applied about a year ago. Am currently growing out the henna).

There was no flash. Only sunlight coming through the window.

Now your turn. :)

When I go into the light my hair seems to be alot ligher then in the dark. It also shows some natural variation. So brown in my room at night...in the day when i go out it looks light brown and some pieces of hair are lighter then others. Maybe its the sun? Either way i like my natural color!:D
I think some pieces are brassy but i like the variation and & the look but i havent seen my hair outside for a while haha 0-0

I'm actually unsure about what color my hair is because of this. In some lighting, it look coppery. In other lighting, it looks darkish blonde. Still other lighting makes it look medium brown. I'm not sure how to determine what color it actually is, with that much variation. Dumb, I know.

Hi, don't have pics yet but inside the house where there is very little day light and energy saving light bulbs the color is a dark red/auburn ( and also in winter.) and in the sunlight and summer the color changes between copper and ginger. a few times it has gotten as light as reddish-blonde. i'll share pics as soon as i can.

My sig pic shows it pretty well.

The top row there is still a lot of bleach in my length; by the last pic, it's mostly gone or blended in (the bleached parts only make themselves known when I wear an updo).

My hair gets called blonde, brown, strawberry (?) blonde, auburn, ash, and numerous other colors. Depending on how much I wash it, and what light I'm in, my hair can look anything from medium golden blonde (profile pic) to dark ash brown.

Many of us with similar hair colors refer to our color as 'hair colored hair' and in a recent thread many of us also discovered that we have eyes that change color, too. Mine go from dark blue to grey-green to 'yellow.'

Wow Mandie what a contrast!

Mine seems to vary from golden blonde to a more washed out blonde to almost brown to caramel blonde with hints of red. Almost always "warm" shades of blonde. I usually just say my hair is medium golden blonde and that is that!

Mine are more subtle than Mandie's but still a clear difference:
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=233&pictureid=16112

In natural light my golden tones are brought out, and my hair is more uniformly lighter and brighter.

Faepirate i love your waves/curls!!! Really beautiful :) and the colour is also absolutly lovely... im sorry but i´ve seen your profile and i have to say this also. You are a lucky girl! I love your different colour eyes, i know someone like that and that is absolutly rare and beautiful. I see it much more often in cats ;)

My hair is just as difficult to describe... it changes in every light. Depending on where people meet me, they think that my hair is a different colour. Under neon lights it looks red, so people that have met me at work call me a redhead. Under regular indoor lighting it's bronze. In the sunlight it's a warm golden or coppery colour. By moonlight it's a silvery colour. So I guess its reddish, blondish, brownish, sometimes dark sometimes fair... haha! My eyes are just as confusing.

All of my life I've been told I have "black" hair. I don't know why it bothers me so very much, but it does. I was born with orange hair. Yep, a true redhead. My mom said that up until I turned two, it was a pretty strawberry blonde color (it looks a bit darker than that to me in old photos, but then they are black & white so who knows?).

As I became more aware of my own hair, I could see beautiful red in my hair...IN THE SUNLIGHT. Otherwise it looked dark brown.

Now? I'm done coloring it and it has tons of silver/gray in it. Probably a good 50% or more is gray now. My 4 year old granddaughter has told me several times that my hair is...you guessed it. Black. And she does know her colors and knows hair colors. So...it took me by surprise that even now, some still perceive my hair to be black when it never has been black.

Thanks for allowing me to ramble through that twaddle! LOL

Another great thread idea :). I'd post my 'reality check' photos I took outside a few days ago but I don't have my act together enough to host the pics on another site first . But I'll describe it. Contrary to my very-together looking light blonde hair in the avatar, the outside shots look unbelievably straggly (prompting me to do a first dusting), with very stark contrasts between my old highlights and my dark roots. :thudpile:

The flash and indoor lighting had lulled me into a false sense of good hair condition.

Faeriepirate: Oh my gosh, your hair is stunning! Makes me renew my patience for growing mine all over again.

My hair use to be redder in the sunlight. After going through chemo, the new growth doesn't seem to have the reddish tones. It looks like it is more of an ashy, darker blond now. I'll be able to tell more as it grows out. The new growth is still to short to tell what color it wants to be.

Natural sunlight through the window. Stripe-y! The red is henna. The brown is my natural color.

Same thing with flash:

My lovely bathroom lights make my hair rather orange-y:

The flash also made it orange-y:

AutumnLeaves, nice story. Funny!

Mandie, that's quite a nice photo combo: color and length changes. By the way, is it just my computer, but it seems the 5/16/2007 blond hair has some green it??

Faepirate, awesome curls! Looks like you and Spidermom and have almost the same hair color.

HeavenlyTresses - wow! Very nice iii, long hair!

Everyone, nice descriptions and photos so far!!

Thanks for the info Mandie. Nice to hear people are keeping their hair chlorine-free as much as possible.

No wonder your hair looks nice and smooth - great job in keeping it healthy. :)

Looking forward to more of your hair-progress creative photos.

When I go into the sunlight my natural hair color changes from a much darker brown to a much lighter brown. Especially, with all of the straightening chemicals I use but now I've got about 35% of grays in my hair now. So, that's why these days I am dyeing it black now.

I recently finished a course in photography and learned a little about how camera's calculate incoming light and I wanted to see the differences for myself.
Here is my test, as you can see the colors of my face and hair are a little bit different depending on what color shirt I'm wearing. And this is a good camera. My webcam gives more drastic results as you can see on my avatar. :D

But after all I still think you hair is a chameleon and/or your eyes are weird camera's :D If only we could record what they are seeing.

The color reminds me of when I was much younger; my hair would bleach out/highlight like that...only to start getting darker at your age.
Enjoy your photography; it is a wonderful hobby :)

Hah okay, so these pictures are from before my big chop in February (probably a month or so after my profile pic was taken? And with my hair in it's natural state and not straightened, which I did for my profile pic)

The first picture is inside, and the second picture is outside the same day with the afternoon sun shining on it

@iYaap; I'd say daylight as well!

This is a really nice idea! This is the result when I took several pictures. Excuse my dirty hair, it's washday xD

What do you all think my haircolor would be called?
I also wonder what would be the most optimal way to photography my hair. Currently I have my camera set on the fist version for my monthly length photo's but it's clearly not showing the right hair color. Or maybe it does, it just doesn't shine like at the bottom, making it look a shade darker.

That's about exactly what my hair does, and why I called it blonette. People never used to believe it got so "blonde" in the sun. It's a little darker now, though, which is why I've started to call it light ash brown.

Such lovely colors everyone has!

Mine's shiny black indoors and in artificial lighting. In the sun, it gets a sort of dark brown glow-I don't quite know how to describe it lol-but the majority of it still looks black.

It is a startling change for me because I spend so much time indoors at the moment and so I really consider myself a brunette but when I do manage to take a pic in the sun I always get so surprised by the change! :o Why do you think yours is getting darker do you think?
