View Full Version : Does anyone here trim more than once a year?

buttercupmcgee
January 25th, 2012, 08:54 AM
I do. Not because my ends are bad per se, but because I prefer some layers next to my face and after about 6 months my hair has morphed back into a heavy, shapeless mop.

So far I've gotten a decent amount of growth doing this, but I wonder if I'm the odd man out.

The reason I ask is I just read a thread where most people trim every few years, if that. I'm just curious if there others out there like me, who trim twice a year or so, and what has your growth been like? :o

I think most of the LHC'ers trim more than once a year. We just don't trim that much off most of the time, I believe.
I trim (or .. dust) every 3 to 4 months. Just for my ends. Not for shape.

I don't really know my growth rate. I've been doing the LHC thing for 6 months now and haven't measured in a while ^_^

I trim my hair whenever it feels like it needs it.
But when my ends feel angry, Ill usually do a deeeeeep conditioning before I grab the scissors. I want to make sure I HAVE to before I actually cut.
I dont have a schedule for my hair cutting, my hair tells me when its time! :D

I have been trimming every 5 months or so, although I am not sure how if affects my growth rate. My hair grows very slowly. But I have decided to trim every 3 months from now on, at the most.

When I wait for 5 months, my hair is always very thin at the ends, and I have to cut off a lot because I have been living in denial, thinking my hair is perfectly fine. Last time I had to cut off 5 cm, (2 inches), and my hairdresser would have cut off more had I allowed it.

But now I just want it to be healthy, and the length will come in time (hopefully). Just have to be very patient... :meditate:

I most certainly do, about every 3-4 months, although I've held off for a year at a time also.

I do! every 2,3,4 months...I like to keep it looking good and with healthy ends, it's more important than length to me ( once it got past waist though) :)
It grows of course, but I've always been trimming like this...so I can't tell difference...from not trimming.
1 thing is for sure - it grows much more now that I self-trim and avoid hairdressers.

I don't trim on a schedule. I'm lucky that my hair grows pretty quickly, so I just trim when I think it needs it. Generally if I chelate and deep condition, but the ends are still velcro-y, then it needs a trim!

I trim about 2 or 3 times a year and my hair is now just above tailbone. As long as your stylist doesn't take too much off, it shouldn't get in the way of your growth too much.

Every 3 months or so. I like to keep the hem neat and since I rarely wear it up, it needs it.

I micro trim every three months or so.

Depends. When there's damage that needs to come off, or to maintain the length, then it gets trimmed more than other times. My hair's normally trimmed 1 to 4 times a year. There were times (years) when I skipped trimming altogether.

Yup. Every 3-4 months. Only a half-inch every time.

January 25th, 2012, 10:57 AM
I trim around every 3 months, thats when my ends get to dry becuase of previous damage. I dont take very much off. From 1/3 - 1 inch mostly. When all previous dye/harsh products damage is gone, I hope to trim a little less often and a little less lenght, but I will still trim at least twice a year I think.

I trim twice a year a salon trim. I have them trim half an inch off.

Since I am trying to grow out damage I trim often but small almost microtrims. I can still see progression in the length.

I trim anywhere from every month to every 6 months. I dust every month. Actual trimming more than a few mm I do probably every 4 to 6 months.

Yup, at least twice a year :) Always 2 to 3 centimeters.

Ligeia_13
January 25th, 2012, 01:02 PM
I don't know if it counts as a trim or just a microtrim but usually, I cut off half a centimetre every 2-3 months. But that's mostly because my hair has bleach damage at the ends and I'm itching to get rid of it.

I think back in the day when I wasn't growing damage out I got about two trims a year.

Every 2-4 months. I can't stand uneven ends.

I trim exactly every 2 weeks. I cut off half an inch every time. Doing this keeps my ends thick, and I get rid of any split ends I see immediately.

I trim about an inch off every three months. When I hit waist I will likely trim whatever my growth rate is every month (I have no idea what it is; I'd estimate 0.75-1") until my dyed hair is all chopped off, which I'm sure will make the length look great, and then possibly grow out to hip.

jeanniet
January 25th, 2012, 02:13 PM
To me "trim" means cutting off more than 1/2" and usually 1" or more, so no, I don't do that often. Less than yearly, and in fact it's been at least two years since the last trim. But I do dust (1/8-1/4" off) fairly regularly, and right now I'm doing it monthly because my ends are feeling like they need it. Over a few months that does add up to some length. When I get to hip I'll be maintaining for about six months and then I'll be trimming 1/2" or more monthly.

Carolyn
January 25th, 2012, 02:20 PM
I usually trim 3-5 times a year. Trim being a half inch or more. I've gone longer but my ends have paid the price. I'm not a fairy tale ends fan so I need to keep up with the regular trims to avoid that.

Maktub

like others, I trimm every 3-4 months too :)
I love blunt thick ends

gothic_lady
January 25th, 2012, 02:40 PM
I trim every two months, but in the last two years I trimmed only once a year. My hair grows slowly no matter what I do, so cutting it once a year or every two months it makes no difference excepting that my ends look better.

Are you still growing to terminal, or are you maintaining?

If you're still growing, then my god, your hair must grow crazy fast to be able to take off an inch a month and still gain length! Heck, even to have an inch a month and still maintain! You lucky dog you!

Sorry for the thread hijack!

I don't. Cutting my hair is always painful for me, even though it's my mom who cut it - and I can trust her. But she has to run after me with cissors for months, telling me my hair it's too damaged for me to accept !

I'm such a sissy when it comes about cutting my hair... :p

I trim 2-3 times a year, depending on my hair's needs.

blondie9912
January 25th, 2012, 04:38 PM
Definitely! I don't think that many people go for several years without trimming. It seems after a big chop some like to go on a 'no trims for a year' challenge to gain back some length, but I think it's rare that people don't trim AT ALL for several years at a time. I don't trim on a schedule, but I probably get about 2 per year, with dustings every other month or so. I'm currently growing out colour, so I'm not afraid to trim often because I think of all of my coloured hair as 'throwaway hair' so to speak, so when it's all virgin I will probably trim less in an effort to gain length.

I trim every 8 weeks.
While I was growing it, I trimmed it every 12 weeks.

I trim every 2-4 months as well, and have done so for the entire time I've been growing. I usually trim an inch or more off every time. Progress has always been slow, but I love having a thick hemline all the time, and I maintain layers as well.

RitaPG
January 25th, 2012, 04:55 PM
I trim about two to three times a year, because I make very, very small trims. It works best for me because I get a little bit of damage from time to time, so a micro-trim once every 3 or 4 months is best to avoid that damage from going up the length and losing more length than needed.

As long as the hair is healthy and the person is happy with it, it is perfectly reasonable to not trim more than once a year or once in a couple years. Of course, people that can manage that are more protective and wear them up more often.

xoxophelia
January 25th, 2012, 04:59 PM
I've definitely trimmed a lot. For a few stretches there I trimmed .5" every month. I've been growing out dye/layers/and damage though which I decided to gradually trim off. If my hair had been completely virgin or even just one color I probably would have trimmed less off.

Definitely just do what is best for you. I feel like the darkest of the dye and worst of the layering (and damage) is now gone from my hair so I won't be trimming at all this year so even if you start out trimming more than most you can stop later on if you change your mind.

I dust my layers every month or every two months and trim my bangs monthly. I trim the length every other time I dust my layers. Once I went almost two years without trimming my ends practicing benign neglect and I was forced to cut about two inches because of the state they were in: no split ends but just really tapered and thinned out and dry.

I trim every 4-6 months to keep my hemline even and neat :) I usually trim an inch off each time.

January 25th, 2012, 07:46 PM
I trim a small amount maybe twice a year. I'm not picky about my hemline yet, and my hair doesn't split very easily at this length.

Nymphea
January 25th, 2012, 08:33 PM
I usually trim every 3 months to get rid of splits, and I take off an inch maybe, maybe less, except when I become scissor-happy by unknown reason, or except when I get too frustrated about the splits. Then I take off more than inch, way off sometimes. A big no for a growing process, I know! :o

That's a reason why I was always travelling across the neverland of not-yet waist or just-waist length.

Now I'm learning to be patient and to trim less often, and also to trim less to see what's happening.

So I made it up to 4 months of no trimming (yay!! :D ), and the moment ago I took just 1/2 inches off and I'm so happy!

1/2 inch trim really can make a difference. :D

Totally more than once a year for me...wish it was far less but previous heat damage mixed with product/not detangling properly/never trimming when needed has forced me to cut 3 inches of just 2 weeks ago and i have to do a trim every 6 months or so (no, not because the salon adviced me to but because i need the damage gone so it doesn't damage the rest of my hair, even if i loose a bit of length, healthy ends comes first right now) but when i get my ends blunt and thick and healthy, i will be trimming every 2 months or so, just because i need my ends to be as thick as the rest of my hair or it just looks bad to me, i LOVE blunt ends.

I trim every two months. I take off about 1/4 of an inch. I heard from an experienced barber (and friend) that that will get me farther then just S&D.

Sounds reasonable and applicable to my hair. If I start to see too many splits, I'll try to switch to this trimming rhythm. :applause

I trim every month if I can but I don't have split ends. It's just that I had some hair loss and my ends are quite see-through so I am hoping it will help thickening the ends up a little bit in the next few months (years?).

January 25th, 2012, 09:01 PM
I used to trim/cut every 2-3 months, but now that I'm "actively" growing my hair out and know how to take care of it much better, I'd say I'm getting dustings every 5-6 months, and likely won't get a "proper trim" of 1/2 and inch to an inch until I get past APL. I have a lot of layers to grow out, once I hit waist I plan on letting it grow two or so inches past and getting those ends cut off, then only dusting until I get down to tailbone. From there, I'll maintain until all the damage is cut out. :)

I guess I'm late to the discussion, but yeah, a lot of it has to do with how the individual defines words like trim, dust and microtrim.

Me? I've basically been microtrimming 3-4 times a year since I got brave enough to attempt it for the first time. Sometimes more often, sometimes less.

By some people's standards, what I trim off isn't much, but for me, it seems those longest strands just grow faster than the rest, and I'd rather keep them trimmed back a bit.

This may sound funny, but I only trim my ends when deep conditioning with VCO does not get rid of the Velcro-y feeling.

I'm growing out from a pixie. I've had it cut twice since last May and aim to do it every 4 months. Last one was at the beginning of December, so if I need it I'll do it again in March. Always at a salon though! I haven't got hair long enough for me to see the ends of the hair at the back!

I trim every few months, not on a fixed schedule, just when my ends get too dry ( or if I find a split end, eek!). I take about a quarter inch off using Feye's method. I'm not game to get scissor happy, I'm still new to self trimming and I'm worried I'd make an awful mess of it if I tried to take off more!

I trim every 2-3 months. My hair is fine and highlighted, so regular trims keep the ends healthy and thick. And I want a thick hemline as it grows. So for me, trims are a must.

AnimaSola3o4

I dust often. I actually went through a long phase of no dusting or anything because I couldnt find my good hair scissors, and I refused to just use whatever I could find since I spent the money on the good ones. So all I cut off were splits or fairy knots. But now that I've found them I dust more often. And I generally pay attention to my hemline to see if it's super uneven then I'll trim a bit more. I prefer to trim (more than just dusting) when my hair is straightened, which isn't very often. But definitely more than once a year, and preferably at least twice a year. :)

Yes, I trim an inch or so about twice a year- despite no heat, no coloring, and wearing it up all the time my ends just can't go more then six months without getting icky. This way I get a good compromise between growth and health.

I think most of LHC trims more often than just once a year. I trim whenever my hair looks like it needs a trim...especially if the ends don't look good for whatever reason.

Right now, I'm trimming to get rid of the black...gradually...

I'm trimming about 0.5inches every 3 months or so. I'm growing out dye and heat damage but still want to gain length. Once I hit waist or a bit below I will maintain for a while and then grow on down to hip and stay there :) (or so I say now..)

I'm way too lazy for regular trims. Before I was growing my hair I would just have it cut back to shoulder each summer and that was it. I haven't had a cut in about 2 years. My hair doesn't seem to fairytale much and I don't get splits so I have no reason to trim I guess.

SimplyViki

I just trim whenever I'm motivated and feel like it. Right now I'm maintaining at/around tailbone, basically, with layers. I trim anywhere from half an inch to two inches each time. I'd say maybe every two to three months.

I trim several times a year and I remove several inches. I am not trying to gain any length, I am aiming to remove it. In the end of May I trimmed back to BSL but now I am back to waist length and I have had one trim in between. It's frustrating. I enjoy my hair when it's shorter but it just grows so quickly, I wih I could just give my growth to someone who needs it !

Ahh UltraBella, I think the majority of posters here on LHC would like your hair "problems" :D.

As for my trimming... I have gone for a year without trimming before (when I had healthier hair, many years in the past) but in general I trim twice a year (or I did until last year where I got a bit scissor happy and did a LOT more self trims ).

I've actually decided to try and go the rest of 2012 without a trim (we shall see...) as I cut off another 2" or so in January (removing damage and thin ends).

But I am pretty sure that after this year I'll continue my regular twice yearly trims (until I reach my goal length and maintain... and then I'll cut more).

I trim 2-3 times a month, taking off about an 1/8-1/4" each time. My ends are terribly thin, and I'm maintaing just shy of waist at 28". I've been doing it for three months now, and it seems to be working out well. No loss of length at all, so I'll keep it up.
