It smells kinda like burnt nuts. Not rancid, just burnt...
Its my second bottle of desert essence and my first one smelled like nothing at all, and I know its an oil they use to dilute EO's and scents so i don't think it should smell strongly of anything. But I've also read that jojoba oil doesn't go bad and it is a brand new bottle, so what gives?
Can I still use it? I think I'd have to add some EO's because I'm not fond of the burnt nuts.
Has anyone else experienced this?

If it has been opened for a little while I would trash it. If it smells off, it usually is.

It smelled like that the moment I opened it from the store., and I was under the impression jojoba oil had a very long shelf life. I haven't been using it, but its 8 bucks a bottle and I've been without oil for my hair for awhile now. Thanks for the advice though, at this point it does seem thats the way I'll be going with it... :(
ETA: You know what it smells like? It smells an awful lot like toasted sesame seed oil, which i am eating on my noodles right now. Good on noodles. not on hair...

Just noticed the same thing with my Jojoba. Was trying to figure out if it's rancid. I hope not, because it's barely been used! What a waste. I really haven't had it very long.

Exactly!!! I'm really hoping that someone will come here and tell us its ok and we can cover it up with some EO's and go on using it...or magically it will go away lol. 8 bucks man. 8 bucks...
Eta: It can't be rancid it just can't be. its supposed to last for years and its a brand new bottle. JUST how long had it been sitting in the factory!? I mean, its desert essence and they recently changed the color of their packaging and its got the new colors so that makes it a newer bottle right? I'm guessing but I think...

I've had the same jojoba oil for months, and it has pretty much no smell..
I googled, and read up a little.. It apparently has to do with the way the oil was extracted. Unless it got hot, like boiling hot, it is probably fine.. and even then, it should be ok, but it's not guaranteed..
Maybe adding some yummy smelling EO's will mask the smell?? You could try certain EO's that smell "foody" or sweet, and try to make it have a burnt marshmallow smell??
Man, you can tell I'm sleepy.. I'm getting overly creative :p

Haha Marshmallow jojoba!!!! I made my own deodorant with coconut oil and baking soda, and it totally smells like cake!!!! I put honey oil and lavender. I'm using it all up before I make more (it works AWESOME) Its smells delicious but I dont love smelling like cake ALL the time.
But marshmallows...maybe that'd be ok. I could add vanilla or some such. But I might have better luck adding something herb-y smelling to mask it like rosemary or bergamot Or lavender (those are the ones I have, so I'm being cheap!) I'd better experiment with small amounts or I might end up with somethng that smells like toasted sesame oil with lavender in it and that actually sounds terrible. Maybe vanilla is the way to go. I wouldnt have thought to try it...Thanks!
So I guess it's probly not rancid, its just a matter of being able to mask the scent...I

What about mixing one drop each of all the EO's you have and smelling them? That way, you're not wasting too much ;)
Vanilla sounds like a way to go.. but depending on what ingredients it has, it may/may not be great for it..
I wish I had a recipe to make marshmallow smell :p
I used to be a barista, and I made marshmallow lattes and shakes... it was always a favorite :D
Since then, anytime someone talks about smell/taste.... I think of marshmallow lol :p

I would probly try to get my hands on some vanilla EO but I'll do some research first. I dont want to do anything to it to that would make me break out...maybe one of the antiseptic ils would be a better way to go...decisions decisions. I guess I've got some experimenting to do! :)
As for Marshmallow scent...I wish I knew how to make that too. But one thing that comes to mind is Lotus EO. it sort of smells like sweet candy. I'm sure the kind I have is diluted (probly in jojoba :p) as I got it (for not much money) at some mystic specialty store with no labels so I don't use it on my skin not knowing exactly whats in it. But it smells freakin' divine. I never knew something could smell like that...Its not really marshmallow but its got that kind of epic sweetness. I think its expensive in pure form though.

Isn't it funny how smells can be so important? lol.. my sister bought a scented oil at an Indian store that had no labels and was called "midnight loving" L O L .. but I must say, it smelled SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO good! We were literally sad when it ran out.. and the store didn't carry that line of oils anymore.. I actually thought about that oil yesterday hehe :)
Do you have any tea tree oil? A few drops would probably mask the burnt smell.. If you can't find a way to mask it.. maybe you could just use that bottle of jojoba oil as a treatment oil? and only do it for pre-wash oilings, or overnight oilings, or something? It sux that it was $8 and smells bad though :(

Midnight Loving! thats awesome. I have one called "Passion Blend" (not as cool sounding as Midnight Loving tho...) it spells delicious. My DBF bought it, he was all "oooh passion...." but I nicked it off him because it smelled too pretty.
I DO have Tea Tree oil. I may well go with it because I dont mind the smell, I use it all the time and I'm quite used to it, although my mom doesnt like it. But...I already use it all the time, and my sister uses TTO Dr. Bronner's so...oh well!
And yeah if all else fails, I'll just use it for things that will just be washed right off. I haven't been able to bring myself to replace it yet, so I probly won't. I'm not 100% sure I HAVE $8 at this precise moment...

I quit using jojoba oil because of it's smell (I thought it smalls like smoked ham) and I already noticed this smell when I open the bottle. Therefore, I thought is this is normal for jojoba oil.

Jojoba oil should not have that kind of smell and it definitely CAN go rancid - it just takes longer to do so than many other fixed oils. Usually it will last just fine for a couple/few years. With luck it can last longer. I've had some go rancid that was exposed to high heat.

Hmm Maybe Trader Joe's had a whole shipment get cooked in the sun or something. Interesting. Well thanks for the help everybody!

I didn't get a chance to read through everything but we had some Organic Camellia oil go bad one time and it def smelled so if it smells return it. Golden Jojoba oil does have a long shelf life but it's recently gone through a drought basically where it was really hard to find so it might be quite old possibly.
When it smells it's gone bad. It should smell like a clean, pure oil. It has nearly no scent.
Golden jojoba has recently came back into the market so try to get a fresh batch with a company.

I was reading through posts in this section and had to throw in my 2 cents on an old topic!
I have bought many a bottle of jojoba oil from GNC (I use it on my skin a lot - never tried it on my hair). Every bottle I have bought has smelled smoky/burnt. I thought it was just a normal thing for the oil. Then I read not too long ago (I can't remember where for the life of me!) that oils extracted at a high heat can have a funky, smoky smell. I made sure the next jojoba oil I bought was cold-pressed/unrefined/organic, and it had pretty much no smell at all. And, coincidentally, my skin seems to like it much better!
