Does anyone here at LHC have peacock-dyed hair??

I want to do this SO bad.. I'd just have to find someone I really trusted to do it for me... I would only do the last inch of hair.. blues, greens, turquoise, purple.... I think it'd look great :)

I googled and googled, but this is the only picture I could find that was even remotely what I'd consider.. my DH will hate it, but he is SO limited in what he likes: Waist-length dark brown hair or Waist length platinum blonde hair with black bottom layer.. that's it.. oh and he always tells me I should "figure out a way to keep my hair looking wet 24/7" lol.. um it's gonna dry sometime.. unless I keep it oiled so it "looks" wet... which he liked, but I felt like people thought I probably don't bathe ;)

*SO anyways.. I think I should do what I like for a change :D

I only want to do my ends on my bottom layer.. maybe the end of my bangs on the sides.. that way no roots or re-dying unless I want to add more color....

Do you have any pictures?? I'm looking for ideas ;)

Well, this is not peacock at all, but I'm dip-dying the ends violet and dark red (I have the violet dye in my hair right now, actually!). You should look into Manic Panic dyes if you're thinking of doing it yourself--they're about as non-damaging as it gets, and they have wonderful colors :) I think there are a couple threads about them.

Make sure you can get the dye cheap! vegetable dyes like that wash out really fast, so make sure you have dark towels for you dry off, I used to get pink on my white towels, and it never came off. How come it won't stay on my hair but it stays on my towels, I used to wonder.

lol.. I will keep that in mind :)

I am only doing the very tips of my hair..

actual size: __________

and I'm only going to about 20 pieces about this wide: _____

It will be very subtle, but I will love it without feeling guilty about damage :)

Hopefully the dye will stay in long enough for it to be worth the time :)

Those are nice, too.

OK, I just dip-dyed my mostly virgin hair (similar in color to the top link and the last two in the set of bottom links). I did not want to bleach, and I got - kinda yucky. (see my album and blog for more)

Given their root hair color, those ladies must have bleached their ends to get the results they did.

And here is what the salon told me, after their 'stronger-than-punky-colors' (as they put it) dye didn't take on my 'Level 6 to 7 colored ends':

1) temp colors like the Directions I was trying won't hold as long as the stuff they used , and will smear even more (the color I have has not run one bit, but I only had it done on tuesday). Directions and similar products do work better on bleached hair, but still wash out (my experience with them is many years old, but supports this theory).

2) hair needs to be porous in order to take color; mine apparently is too healthy now, despite sun-bleached ends, to do so.

3) it is possible to only do a mild bleaching, just to make the ends take the color enough (I don't think any of those colors linked above are less than fully bleached!) and have a more subtle look with streaks of brighter color (what I may do)

4) such colors just won't work on darker, or non-porous, virgin hair. My stylist, who I like and trust, and her brother are co-owners of their salon, and she felt my hair was light enough at the ends to take the color. He was skeptical. We tried it, and my hair is still too dark to take it even though it is arguably blonde on the ends.

So, that's my experience. :)

If you are willing to bleach the heck out of your hair, and keep redying, I would say those Directions/Punky/Manic Panic etc dyes are just fine. You can do it cheap. :)

If you want a more permanent or professional look, it seems like, for most people, you are going to need to bleach.

hth!

With how dark your hair is, the colors won't show up really obviously. Like J, she's got black hair, and the ends are extremely damaged, so they show up purple, but the rest just fades into the black. My hair, when I peacock dyed it - I was 13 or so, so no pictures still. But it wasn't visible unless I was under bright light. Which is how I got away with it.

With Manic Panic, I started to use 10v bleach on the ends, on for 10 minutes, just enough to make my hair go "HEY! I DON'T LIKE THIS!", didn't use it long enough to lighten my hair much. Just enough to make the cuticle get all ruffled up. Then to further piss my hair off, I scrubbed with harsh shampoo, no conditioner. THEN I dyed the ends. So the color did actually somewhat stay. MP lasts with shampoo about 2 weeks, conditioner only, 6-8 weeks. Special Effects lasts with shampoo about 6-8 weeks, don't know conditioner only.

YMMV.

I was browsing the manic panic site last night, and though most colours the reccomend bleaching first, there are some theysay will work on blonde hair, and some that will even work on darker hair. There was a dark blue in particular that they showed a picture of a young boy with medium brown hair and his mom had applied the MP and it worked. I think how long you leave it on makes a big difference, and then because his hair was short it got the heat from his skull too.

Mine were not really peacock intentionally, but the dark blue faded greenish because my ends bleached to orange. Probably would have been more peacock with some purple.

I'm only wanting about 30 pieces of hair approx this wide: ____ and then length of those 30 pieces tips would be only dyed on the very end of the hair about this long: __________.. in blue, green, and purple..

I want it to be very subtle and I would never have to bleach it again, maybe just retouch the color again.. I only want it to be the bottom layer of my hair and then maybe 4 or 5 ends throughout the top and sides to blend together.. I want it to be subtle and just enough to have fun with.. I will post pictures when I do it :)

I have a ton of experience with hair dyes and bleach.. I have just never ventured into the bright colors like these :)

I so want to do this but I'm worried about the colours bleeding and mixing...

For mine, I just used kaleidocolors and lightened each strip, then wrapped in foil (i can foil beautifully, but not on my own head hehe)... then when it had just started processing and turned brassy (which most people don't prefer but I wanted for the copper color) I rinsed my hair and towel dried. I just rubbed on the blue gently and let it sit for 1 hour. The night before I did it for 30 minutes, but it didn't show up.

If you have light hair, it would be better to just wrap each piece immediately when you put the colors on. Depending on how many colors you want, just put ones together/close to each other that compliment each other when they mix, like green/blue yellow/green purple/blue... Im pretty sure with blue/purple/green or teal, the colors would look great however :D

The girl in the other peacock picture probably had someone foil those colors in, seeing as how they're placed..

If you do it, post pictures please!!!

I want to do this. My natural color is actually pretty light I guess (light brown maybe?)

I still have a lot of blue Raw hair dye, I did a streak in my bangs not too long ago (End of October) and it showed up pretty vibrant, without bleach, and over my henna glosses.

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=4113&pictureid=117633
(the blue streak with about an inch of roots, you can see where the henna starts if you look closely)

I wouldn't want it to be a solid line of blue though. I'd want to only do a few bits, with maybe a few longer streaks as well.
Kind of like this: http://thebeautydepartment.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/tbdperfectpastels.jpg but with dye instead of pastels.

eta: how does one properly foil hair? The foil always slides out on me when I try, I had to ultimately ball it up and cover it with a headband to do that bit in my bangs.

There are TONS of ways to foil hair.. but this is what I do:

Take the piece of hair you want to foil, about 1/4 inch thickness ( if it's too thick, only the top of the hair will have the color/bleach intended..) and about 3 inches wide max.. smaller is better when you're just starting to practice it..

Take the hair and separate it with a rat-tail comb with a skinny metal end.. kind of in a triangular groove.. so that it's not a straight block of hair being dyed. Hold the hair in your non-writing hand and pick up the foil in your "writing" hand, fold the edge of the foil over the metal end of the comb, about 1/2 inch over, lay hair over the foil tightly, holding the end of the hair, then "secure" the hair to the foil by adding some dye/bleach/treatment.

I fold mine over, and then fold the edges to close them, but you can experiment and get your own rhythm and way of doing it.. It's lots of fun!

**BTW I am NOT a professional, I was taught by a professional cosmetologist who was my babysitter... just in case someone gets upset that I gave foiling advice ;) **

*If the ends of the hair are too long, just lay them onto the hair that's already covered in dye and paint the back of the ends really well.. then fold them up in it** :)

I thought I'd give you guys a tip... Have you heard about Isadoras new hair mascara? It comes in all different colors. I think I'll buy one and try it out since i don't want a permanent peacock hair

I got one of these. Sadly it takes a lot of color for it to show and it has a very hard time coloring darker hair. When it finally has been saturated with color the hair is left sticky and with a strange "powder" coming off...

Did you know that they designed some antique hair combs, usually of celluloid, in the design of a peacocks set of feathers, on display. Some examples are really gorgeous, others not so much.

Complete with paste stones, too !

They occasionally show up on eBay. They're a bit harder to find.

I'm not into the look of rainbow hair: I can't tell the difference between that and clown hair sort of. I s'pose it's all in how you think it looks.

But on the bottoms, it might be neat.
