That is quite impressive.
I would be interested in knowing more about the history behind the photo, if that were possible. How did these ladies meet each other? Did they sew matching dresses specifically for their group photo, or are their outfits the result of living in a religious community? With the bunny, the chickens, the background... it looks like there was some degree of artistry that went into the picture. That is, the photographer is trying to create a certain ambiance. I'd like to know the reasoning for that particular venue, if there are other photos of them, and all sorts of things. I doubt it is possible, though.

This is the "family photo" that was taken after all the filming was done. It was a very successful video installation at the biennial that The Whitney holds, and one has to be invited to participate. One cannot apply. I'm in front, the apparent blonde, and relatively shorter long hair compared to everyone else. It remains a fond memory. A lot of work over two summers in outdoor hot, humid Florida weather.

The hair is great, but the first thing that popped in my mind was: "Wow, what a cute bunny!"
You would laugh if you saw how the bunny makes an appearance in the art video installation itself. I did. Very cute. That's Mika Rottenberg's creativity and sense of humor popping through.
We had to work with real animals, chickens, bunnies, horses, goats! Yep, I caught a running wild goat by the horns and corraled them along with a few of these other ladies. We collected real chicken eggs and all kinds of stuff for the filming.
I can also say, that, yes, Dave Decker was a humongous help on set. He did everything from combing hair, holding combs, arranging hair for shots, to lying on the dirty ground to release chickens out of doors and a lot of driving people around. He was a HUGE help!
This was a fun art project, and you can see bits of the video online. But not the whole thing. It's an installation of buildings from the "farm" that was put together complete with veggie garden and lawn and these buildings and platforms. AT the installation at The Whitney (in New York, NY) and then she mounted 5 screens on the interior (which was a reduction of the room we "slept" in, sort of) and each ran a "loop" of video footage, and together these create the "story". So you can't have say a copy of the video because it's not put together serially. It's several looped images running and together they form the story. The image of what I call "the waterfall" which is water being poured down one of the ladies hair while she rests on a platform over 8 feet tall (since her hair is 8 feet plus in length) is absolutely gorgeous.
Several of us went to the opening at The Whitney Biennial, and it was like no other experience I've ever had. Four of us, I think, maybe 5, showed for the opening and we all wore our hair down, and we were the first thing that people saw when they came into the biennial. We stood in front of Mika's installation, and the people just clamoured around us. It's the closest I've ever been to what it must be like to be surrounded by Paparazzi! The people were layers deep and they would raise their cameras overhead and pop off photos. We also had this really weird dude that I named "Goat Man" who kept popping up inside and outside the installation. Inside he liked to pop up in a window and then he'd nay like a goat. He was not a planned part of the installation, I'm quite sure. He made me feel quite uncomfortable. People were very considerate of all of us, overall. Moreso than any Paparazzi might, I daresay. I could tell there were lots of questions, but most were too scared to ask stuff. It was crazy fun to be there! We went downstairs to where there were refreshments, and it was barely standing room only it was so packed! I had problems later in the evening because with all these people it became hot, not to mention my hair being down too creating its own heat, and I had a hard time finding water. Getting to the counter to ask for water was like wading through mud, it was so densely packed. Quite an experience. Then days later we went to a thing in another part of New York to celebrate Mika's success.
I don't dare share all the names of the ladies here because that may be a violation of privacy. But we all got along great, and had great fun together. I will mention Lady Grace since she had something to do with getting the space for Mika to film. I could live like that every day, filming every day. It's very interesting and a ton of fun. It's also very tiring work. Us ladies had to get up at 2 am and wash our hair and completely dry it by around 6 am to be ready for shooting film. We wanted to be good ambassadors for long hair and not have dirty hair be filmed. So sleep wasn't the thing any of us got a whole lot of. I will mention that the Asian woman had around 14 feet of hair, perhaps a bit longer. They built her a little push trolley to roll her hair around with. It was adorable.
The guys that shot the video footage and the guy who took this photo are true professionals. The guy who shot this photo was amazing at understanding light and sensing how much sun was left before a cloud would come along and dull the sun's light.
And being in Florida itself was an experience, with that humidity, heat and every afternoon of downpours and sudden big puddles.

The costumes were sewn for us in advance, without our presence, prior to the filming. We submitted our measurements. They requested specific measurements be taken, and this lady sewed all the costumes. It's not that we all decided to dress up for a photo.
The guy who took this photo is a high-end photographer, and I recall he does photo shoots of women's hair for shampoo products. High end products. He's amazing, and super nice. He kind of got us to model for him. He talked to us a few moments before taking the shot. He talked about how women in this era were proud of their hair--and he's right about that.
He was a really talented and super nice guy.

You are welcome, Heidi - I was honored to help you all.
You accurately enumerated the animals that were planned to be on set... no mention of those that were not planned (but made an entrance anyway) - the bison(!) that stumbled onto the set when you played your flute. :)

Yeah, that was kind of a scary moment. I was asked to play my flute while the other women were up on these higher platforms. Suddenly one of the ladies' turns around and says, "Look!!"
And we all look towards her pointing finger, and see a buffalo inside the set. The set was designed in an enclosed circle with one entrance/exit. It was made of real wood, a bit over 6 feet high. No way to clear the fence with hair down and long dresses on.
And here was a buffalo inside! Talk about scared.
I personally kind of froze, but I recall I looked around for a way out and realized that would not be much of an option. Thankfully someone managed to get the buffalo out with no calamity or drama. He was munchin' on grass.
The owner of the property had a small herd of buffalo. I later learned that he had trained his herd to follow his whistle as it meant food was put down for them, so the owner assumed that somehow my flute playing kind of got confused with whistling. Glad there was grass to munch!
Every day, these buffalo had a routine they followed that was somewhat around the set. Daily they would travel their route of sorts. The morning always began with them rather uncomfortably close (to me anyway) to the set. Every day we had to walk around them to/from the "set". Many days I got a ride from Dave to the set because I was afraid of the Buffalo herd. They never snorted or charged. They were pretty low-key, as long as you didn't get too close.

This is a write-up regarding the Biennal showing at The Whitney (2008 ).
http://whitney.org/www/2008biennial/www/?section=artists&page=artist_rottenberg
It also has a photo that was not used in the video loops themselves, but was in the catalog under Mika Rottenberg's entry.
Link to a youtube video interviewing the artist, Mika Rottenberg. The video shows some of the shots from the Cheese installation at The Whitney, and she discusses her artistic interest and intentions. Interspersed are other bits of footage from other installations she's completed.
This video includes a full frontal view of the "installation" at The Whitney. It's just a flash, and it's easy to miss, but it's there.

I honestly can't recall, and while there, I rather had no idea where in Florida I was really. But I can say it was quite the experience I had. Maybe Dave Decker can answer that question better? But then again, it kind of gives some personal information that I don't think some people want known publically via the internet so I feel protective of that, a bit. Sorry to have to tell you that.

The art video is VERY loosely based on the story of The Sutherland Sisters.
http://www.damncoolpictures.com/2008/02/seven-sutherland-sisters-with-worlds.html
Very basic info, but some good photos showing that they weren't really curly haired, although they possessed some body (as evidenced by braid waves).
There were 7 sisters in all. I have no evidence of their mother. I do not know what happened to their mother.
Around Niagara Falls, NY, which is where they are from is an exhibit of things about them.

Lady Grace organized a party and we all met. We had a lot of fun at the Long Hair Gathering.
I so wish I had better clothes to wear to these events. I always feel so unattractive compared to everyone else.
I highly recommend at least once or twice attending a long hair gathering wherever you can. It's really fun, and usually a great time had by all involved. PLUS it's way cool to meet fellow longhairs.

I thought this was a thread for those LHCers's who want to grow to a foot or longer! :p
I love the photo though! All of them have gorgeous heads of hair. *Jealousy setting in* :p

I certainly wouldn't either, and I don't believe for a second that the Sutherland Sisters really used it.

Here is info on the artist that produced the film which this photo (still) comes from. Scroll down on the page to the last paragraph.

Slight correction. This photo was taken AFTER all filming was completed. This image was not used at The Whitney installation, nor in The Whitney catalog. It was intended as a kind of gift for the "sisters" to have as a memento of the event. I don't know who put it online, even. I wonder if Mika even knows of this. (I am one of the models in the film and in this photo, so I know the circumstances surrounding this photo.)

Wow I'm in awe! I don't think that I could handle hair that long though. I'd be happy just to make it to waist.

Dave, I understand you were a VERY big help during the shooting of "Cheese". So I know this is a very old thread, but I was trying to see if anyone here knew if the movie Cheese was available and knew anything about Mika Rottenberg? Lady Grace and I organized the Peaceful Wood long hair gathering at her place the night before the shooting of the movie. It was amazing!! The hair was phenomenal. I helped out for a couple of days of the shooting, but had to leave. Dave Decker helped out much more during the process. I have been trying to see if the movie is available. I have seen a trailer, but that is it. I tried to reach out to Mika, but have been unsuccessful. After talking to her at the gathering, she had short hair but really loved long hair. I do miss those days. What I have heard is that Mika tried to sell the movie to various movie distributors but has been unsuccessful. I don't know if that is true. If anyone has information, let me know. In my opinion, i think part of the problem is the movie name. Yes, cheese is important, but I think a name that highlighted the long hair would have helped it in the marketplace.

I read the title of this post and thought, 'If foot-long hair is amazing, my hair is amazing!' (well, it's only a bit more than a foot long by LHC measurements). But, wow, what amazing hair! Reading back through the thread, Scottster it looks like heidi w. said it wasn't available as a movie as such, but that the footage was split and shown in different parts of an art installation. It looks like Mika Rottenberg is on Facebook, and on artsy.net - perhaps you could try reaching out to her there?
Sidenote: sometimes I wonder what happened to people who were clearly once very active on this site, but aren't any longer, like heidi w. and Madora. I hope they're doing ok!

Oh yes, you must have overlapped with some of them! Clearly I have a little bit too much time on my hands at the moment, but it feels like such a mystery - where did they go? Did they have an argument with someone on the forum? Did life just get in the way? Did they cut their hair and join a secret rival Short Hair Community?! Anyway, I hope they’re doing well wherever they are!

That's the best we can hope for. :)
Normally people sometimes come and go, but if someone stays gone for a long time, and they were very active back when I was new, I then tend to worry.

The photo is just stunning but I had to read a bit to understand where "Cheese" came in  The footage I could see on Youtube looked really interesting! I wonder where these ladies are now :)

Me too, DropStitches. I'm spent a lot of time browsing old threads that predate my time here and I often think about the same thing. I hope they're okay too, wherever they are :)

The last time I saw Heidi w. was in 2007 at her long hair meeting in ILL. I believe I emailed her every now and then the next couple of years, but lost track after that. I hope she is well. She was a great lover of long hair and a great resource to a lot of people on haircare.

DropStitches, thank you. I should have looked more closely at the posts. Interesting concerning the footage of Cheese. I had no idea and thanks for the info. I had seen some footage of Mika and her later projects this past year, so I can see how she would make the footage into art. I had never heard of the term, "art installation". I wish though she had edited all together into a movie. The scenes I saw during the shooting and since are stunning! Thanks also for the "artsy.net". I will look that up!
