Hey ladies,

I've been really wanting to dye/bleach my hair light light blonde (think Lady Gaga, Gwen Stefani) And I haven't dyed my hair since highschool, like 4 years ago, so it's in pretty good condition...I always do my color at home bcuz it's so much cheaper than a salon, but I want the least damaging dye as possible, so to those out there that dye their hair, which do you think is the nicest toward hair?

BTW-My current color is my natural color, just fyi lol

Best brands, tips for not messing it up, lol etc.

I am contemplating also dying/bleaching back to blonde! I am at the moment an orangy colour so I think it will be tough, But I have recently read somewhere online ( or maybe on here) that if you cover your hair in coconut oil for an hour and then put the bleach over the top it protects the hair from 90% of the damage and also increases the effect of the bleach and lightens it salot more than iot usually would.

But please look into this before trying it as I only skimmed the article.

Sarah ;-)

Unfortunately bleach is always going to be damaging. Is that your hair colour in your avatar? If so, it doesn't look like it'll need a great deal of bleaching. Maybe a 30 vol or you could try a bleach bath (mix bleach with shampoo), I had this done at a salon and it took me from dark plum to ginger (obviously I had a tint applied afterwards, lol)

Faellen do you know how I can get from Ginger well a dark Auburn to blonde? I know that 6 months after being blonde I will want it to be dark again.

The only thing that annoys me about being lighten blonde than my natural colour is after a little while it looks brassy. Grrr

I used Ultra Blue by Clairol for years, I only left it on for a few minutes, since my hair is dark blonde to begin with. It worked well for me.

GoldberryHair, it's none of my beeswax, but your natural color is GORGEOUS. Like, absolutely show-stopping. I understand the desire to experiment, and certainly when you're young is the time to do that, but my heart is in my throat thinking of bleach touching that amazing natural hair!

Anyway, you should definitely do what makes you happy, and your hair will always keep growing, but just know that from my perspective that what you already have is exceptionally beautiful. :blossom:

What shade of blonde are you after? Bleach blonde? Annoyingly, ginger/red tones are mega hard to remove, in my experience! Ash blonde dyes will help loads, helps to neutralise the brassiness :)

Aw thank you! Yeah I think I'm gonna try it just because its been on my mind so long, and it'll be easy to dye back if I don't like it lol

I bet your hair would look beautiful as a pale blonde. However, the next dillemma you will have is root maintenance. If you hair is pretty tough, maybe you'll be ok. My hair is fragile and the 'upkeep' is the reason coloring is a struggle because overlapping the process can break hairs.

My hairs actually pretty strong, I used to dye it tons of diff colors, blow dry/flat iron it, tease it and it held up really well so I think I'll be okay lol I HOPE! haha

I know you're asking about bleach...but...

I got platinum blonde with sun in and lemon juice. It didn't take that long and I think it was less damaging than bleach, but I've never used it so I don't really know. My hair was a very dark blonde---read light brown, I've been in denial that I'm not a natural blonde since I was very young---I blame my mother who still is confused about why my roots grow in so dark .

The picture below is actually lighter than my starting color, I always lightened it with the stuff, since I was like 8 :o. I'm not sure if you want to go lighter than what I got. Gwen's hair is almost white sometimes. BTW my roots drove me crazy.

After:

I hope that helps! Both pictures are of indoors light.

ETA: Also John Fredia lightening stuff worked well. I was also using the shampoo and conditioner at the time too.
BTW I also think my starting color in the picture almost matches your color. I used a bit of heat and sun with the stuff.

I now do bleach baths because they aren't as damaging and you can do them every week instead of waiting for the 4 weeks between full bleaching. Also I heavily coconut oil prior and it really helps reduce the damage. I need to get my hair to near white to dye it the colour I want and so far I haven't noticed a great difference in the quality of my hair. Aslo washing in between with a purple shampoo will help tone out the brassyness, which you will need to do to get to platinum.

If your hair is naturally blonde like mine and you just want to go blonder, then i sujest you try a Korres hair dye. With honey and these natural methods you won't get dramatic results. Bleach on the other hand is TOO damaging-trust me don't go there-i've done it for years and i just couldn't get past "cleavage" length!

So i've been dying my hair with the Korres hair dye.It doesn't contain much peroxide, so you can only go 2 shades lighter or something

It works great for my hair and i don't notice much damage. You can visit their website and read more.
p.s. if you do try it, chose an ashy(silver) shade, not a warm - honey one, because due to lack of peroxide, it tends to go warmer anyway. I use 9.1 "ash very light blonde"

To give you an idea , my natural hair color is something like this (like her roots):

....and the end result is something like this:

I couldn't find exact matches of course but i hope you get the idea!:)

Your natural hair is beautiful. Personally, I wouldn't bleach it.

My natural colour is a very light ash blonde. I would like a colour something like this.

If you want to go for an extremely pale blond, I'd use L'Oreal Super Blond. Mine works out nicely if I do multiple sessions of two hours with bleach once a week. It is about $15 where I live (but everything is expensive here since it can only be barged in). But it has toner built in and is less harsh than Manic Panic's bleach.

I've used it six times, and the only problem I've had with this technique is when I do it when I'm tired and accidentally fall asleep with the bleach in my hair (which was two days ago).
