I know this may sound stupid, but is it possible to do too much S&D ?
I discovered this method and began to use it a few weeks ago. But as I'm a little bit obsessive :D I do it almost everyday now and cut off quite much.
I have many many split ends (I used to feel like all my ends were split), sometimes a good inch up on the hair. But like it's a damaged hair, I cut anyway.
Have you already experienced that ? Did it changed the way your hair looked in a good or bad way ? Does it make it look shorter ?
(I was always long-haired so having my hair looking short is a real issue to me >_<)
Thank you for answering ! :)

There are definitely potential issues in too much S&D. You can thin out your hemline, make it uneven, and just plain old become obsessed with it :p If you find that you have so many splits that you need to S&D daily, I would recommend a trim to get rid of your splits, then follow up with S&D every so often to keep the splits in check.

I know when i first started to S&D it seemed like all my hairs were split. My sides had a lot of damage. I had to S&D a couple of times a week. I eventually had to cut some face framing layers on the side to give them some shape. But i liked that i could run my fingers thru my hair and comb it out nicely with out a lot tangles. So it was worth it for me.:cheese: Then I looked into different ways to deep condition my hair with moisture treatments. This has helped keep the splits at bay. Thank goodness, cause i thought i was going to cut off all my too!!

Thank you for asking this!
I used to s&d when I was really young, only because I was a bored kid and nail clippers were usually handy. I did it constantly until my mother drilled it out of me. I'm a bit hesitant to start back up... I did it a few times recently and I think it worked at well. It probably depends on if you are cutting out numerous bits of damage which are close together, or if you are spreading it out more.
I'm excited to see the responses on this.

No, if done properly, I don't see how you could lose too much hair with S and Ding every day.
Now, of course, if the damage is located on several parts of the same strand, then naturally you're going to lose length. But if the damage is left, it will only grow worse, so it is best to get rid of it.
In the long run, if you have a lot of damage, then it would be more efficient to just get an overall trim and get rid of the damage once and for all, then S and D afterwards to keep the damage away.

For me, any amount of S&D would be too much. I prefer simple self-trims (http://feyeselftrim.livejournal.com/) once or twice a year.

I S&D every day- not lately, but usually I do it every day. I did it every day for about a month and it did improve the look of my hair. My hair did not get shorter.

I S&D almost every day, but luckily I only ever find a few splits, so I think for me it's okay.
I think if you have a lot of damage you might be best to get a trim in case it starts looking uneven. Plus, then you can start afresh and try to minimise them forming at all :)

When I started to grow ma hair activelly (2 years ago). I used to S&D overmuch! Everyday at least 2-3 hours,,,I was very obsessed with it. I had a lot of spilt ends, that were eliminated. but as a result...I thinned my ends so much  I stopped to S&D. It was more than 1 year ago. I let my hair grow for 1 year without trims and S&D and now I am self-trimming. It makes me much happier than S&D actually :)

I have splits and damage up to my ears I think, so for me it's either cut it all off or get rid of it slowly while keeping some length. I s&d A LOT, so I do pretty frequent microtrims to get rid of the taper I tend to get from it. This method is working pretty well for me (:
I guess it kind of depends on your situation, your priorities and your personality which solution fits you the best, but the only harm s&d can do is probably giving you a little bit of taper (if you do it a lot).. and making you more obsessive, if you're that kind of person.

I like to S&D in the car on long drives (while my DBF is driving of course!) There's something about holding up hair between me and the window that back-lights it perfectly and the splits become super obvious. We go back to our home town every 6-8 weeks, which is a 3.5 hour drive each way, so my hair gets a thorough S&D then and I pretty much ignore it the rest of the time. I never have a ton of splits though, so doing it every day wouldn't accomplish much.
I don't think doing it more regularly would hurt much though. If the hair is damaged, it's damaged; may as well get rid of it before it splits more. You might want to think about why you're getting so many though and concentrate on strategies to improve the health of your hair instead. :)

Tank you for all your answers !
I actually had a trim a few weeks ago and began to S&D soon after that to remove the remaining split ends. I can't imagine doing another trim now ! >< I consider my hair a bit like a third inactive arm, it's always a torture to cut it off.
So I think I will continue S&D and check regularly if my hemline's still ok, and use a lot of mosturizer to avoid new split ends !
I began to use shea butter like two weeks ago, I already feel a change for the texture, I hope it will also help for split ends...
Thank you all for your good advices ! :)

I did the same when I first heard of S&Ding and with having hair on the thinner side it did effect my ends, they got a lot thinner sadly, since then I was doing monthly dustings which helped some but I have trimmed my whole years growth but for 2 inches or so, now I have joined the no trims for 2012 in the hopes of gaining some length, I figure I'll maintain at classic after I reach it in the hopes of gaining some thickness on my hem line, which will take a while then move on to my final goal of finger tip length....ah well we live and learn lol
I do think that if a person has thick hair that S&Ding is something that can be healthy for their hair but for us thinner people it should be done with care
