Fortunately or unfortunately, there don't seem to be any hard-and-fast rules. It really depends on what your hair is like (split-prone or not, for instance), how long you want to grow, how important heat-styling is to you, how much time/money/effort/ingenuity you want to put into your hair, etc., etc.

There are definitely useful tips to be picked up around here, but I don't think there is really one set of best long-hair practices.
