Chinese bun with damp hair. Looks a little better this time:

Do I just need more length? I have APL length currently.

It might be that you need more length. It also might be that your hemline is too blunt and/or thick, making your tassels larger and harder to hide behind the rest of your hair (which is really what makes them look nice and neat). I've had this problem with braided Chinese buns as well. But keep growing and before you know it, you'll be able to do buns that didn't work before. :)

Thanks guys! :)

More encouragement to keep growing and to try again this morning.

I've never tried it without the braids, but yours looks good. The one with braids takes more length, maybe waist? I can do it, but I am past waist, almost hip/TB.

Have you seen these...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlHhRqzmRpc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n98D0j8Ypfg&feature=results_video&playnext=1&list=PL8239913360E6D8E2 i also used to use the bun every dsy from about BSL onwards but found if i cross the braids before i put the stick through it, it looked much better.

It looks neat. But when your hair is longer, you'll be able to tuck in the tails of the braids. Don't give up!

You've got the right idea for both styles. It does help to have longer hair but the thing is you're trying..and every time you attempt it, it will become easier to do.

One suggestion about using braids for the Chinese braided bun...
you might try braiding slightly loosely, to give more flexibility to those braids when you wind them around the hairstick. Tight braids can be frustrating when you want to wrap them around something.

Happy styling!

My hair is just a little longer than yours and I manage it. I hide my ends with bobby pins under the bun. Makes it look cleaner. :)

The second one looks really good. You've got the right idea. I think a little bit more length would make a difference.

The second one looks like mine when I do it, but I use these tiny little mini clips to tuck the ends under the bun and you can't see them: http://www.amazon.com/Goody-Classics-Mini-Micro-Count/dp/B005I03716/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1325604307&sr=8-5. I get them in a color that matches my hair, so you could get the blond colored ones. You can see how my chinese bun attempt looks in my album.

Great advice all! I will definitely check out those YouTube videos and the claw clips look like they would work really well to hold those ends in.

I have been struggling with loose hairs around my ears when braiding or pulling into a ponytail. I'll take a picture of the bun I did today later tonight. It feels a little more secure.

I took Madora's advice to braid a little less tightly at the top, and Arrow's youtube video was really helpful. Here's my attempt from tonight (last night I was not feeling well after getting home from work).

I think it looks a lot better!

Here's my Chinese bun! The ends are sticking out here and there, but considering I wore it up all day, it doesn't look too terrible.

If you don't have Facebook, I also have a pic in my albums. :eyebrows:

I think it looks good, it will look even better with longer hair. My hair was a good waist before I could do this. All I could manage was a basic bun!

Thanks! My hair stick maker, Treva made it. She's on etsy and her shop is hairjems. It's an easyclip hairstick, meaning the dangles and beaded ends can be clipped off and on at my pleasure.

@ jojo, ya my hair is very close to bsl, yet I manage. Is my fav bun actually so I'm glad I can do it with my (what I call short) hair.

I'm looking at her shop and I love her stuff. So pretty! I really like the white pearl and glass beads hair sticks she has there.

:). I have several of her hair sticks and highly recommend her. She will even make you something custom at the same price as the rest of her stuff. I tend to buy her purple sticks as 90% of my wardrobe is purple. I'm alittle purple obsessed. :D

I recently learned this style and my hair is about the same length as yours...my first attempts were a little loose and not so secure (I've not tried with braids)

this shows it being done with what looks like a little longer than shoulder-length hair

http://artforhair.blogspot.com/2008/06/styles-3-chinese-bun.html

I found that a little spray gel on my hands helped keep things in better order as I wrapped my hair and a few judiciously placed bobby pins keep the ends in place

good luck! you're doing great already!
