View Full Version : Detangling and Updos (curly oriented)

Fellow curlies, here is my delimma:
Whenever I have a freshly washed head of curls I usually leave my hair down to enjoy them at their fullest. The next day they look alright, but I prefer to put my hair up.
On to the big questions...
Do my fellow curlies detangle on 2nd+ hair days before putting the hair up if the updo doesn't require it (i.e. hair sticks or claw clip)? I ask because I've got 2nd day hair today and just did a full blown finger-detangling session before putting it up in a hair stick. Oiling my hands made the process easier, but I still didn't enjoy the sounds. Does bypassing the detangling for simple updos lead to damage or is there an easier way for curlies to detangle 2nd+ hair?
Thankoo!

i dont detangle my hair unless it is wet, just cuase it ends up creating more knots and pulling so when i put it up curly i try my best to just do a simple up do that does not require any hair seperation

I tend to wear it up on my "wash day," as it gets so tangly otherwise. If I do wear it down for full curly-ness, then I either CO again before putting it up or I spray it with lots of water and aloe (with a touch of oil) prior to putting it up. If I've worn it up or braided to dry, then no, I don't detangle beyond running my fingers through it once or twice on its way up.

I will either detangle or wet my hair in the shower (but not wash) and then do my updo from wet. I get less of those annoying baby hairs around the front of my hairline then too.

I rarely do my up do wet, or even damp. On my face, I need the softness of the baby hairs, otherwise I look mean.
I finger comb after the shower, from there on besiedes the occaisional knot, I do not worry about the tangles until the next shower. I am not one to do complicated updos that require brushing anyway.

I usually don't detangle my hair before putting it up. I prefer to detangle right before washing it, or if I've gone long between washes (and am too lazy to wash at that time), then I'll detangle it and put it in a braid. But more often then not, I just put it up.

If it has dried curly, my only real options are peacock and pony as everything else looks too weird if I try to "compress" it all. I don't detangle it first.
My other updos I put up just towel dried and usually oiled. Combing through the oil for these dos is pretty much the only time I comb outside the shower.

I only detangle my hair when it's soaking wet and full of conditioner. Aside from that I don't even bother until my next wash. For my updos I just put it up and if it looks messy then oh well, but if I'm going for a sleeker look I'll just take out my spray bottle to mist my hair until it's pliable enough to work with and then put it up.

I'm not technically "curly" (2c) but I don't detangle on the second day if I'm using a stick, claw, or wavelength pin. Too much snapping noises.

That's what I do too. The less I manipulate my hair, the happier me & my hair are.

I do not detangle before putting my hair up . I am too lazy. Of course, I have to detangle for braids, but I usually only wear braids for a long hike or kayaking.

I always wet my hair before detangling. I don't necessary get it soaking wet but i mist it with water and a little bit of conditioner (or water only). I aslo don't worry about getting it perfectly and completely detangled before putting it up (I hope this makes sense... )

Me too. I sometimes finger comb a bit from time to time but not usually a full detangling with a comb until before I am about to wash again. I go a long time between washes too. Even when I do a simple braid I usually just separate into three sections and braid. If I do a French braid now I have to finger comb well or detangle with a comb.

If the updo does not require detangling then I don't. If I want I sleek look I will rinse some conditioner through (keeping it off my scalp) and comb, even if it is 2nd day. I am all for the messy up do's (peacock, messy french twists, "bunched up" held with a large flexi8). Sometimes I slick the front down to the side and hold with a bobby pin and let the rest be frizzy and wild.:joy:

Good question and I'm taking in what the other's have said. I usually try and finger comb my hair or use a very wide tooth comb to take out some tangles, prior to putting my hair up.

I don't. I usually just put it up on the second day. But I must say here that I cannot do that for many days or I will have a matted mess on my hands. Second day is fine. Third day of no detangling is usually okay. Beyond that, it gets dangerous. That's when I will usually finger comb before putting it up if I am unable to wash it. I just start to get too worried about it knotting up too much. I've had some bad experiences going several days without combing the tangles out. I prefer to detangle in the shower with some assistance...like conditioner or slippery soap, oil, etc. My schedule does not always allow me to do that whenever I want.

I fingercomb my hair every couple days, or else it simply won't stay in an updo because it's such a mess. I've never heard any sounds that would indicate damage as long as I keep my nails smooth.

I don't usually mess with my hair much between CO's. I most always detangle when it's soppy wet. I let it dry loose. If I wear a braid I will detangle using oil and my fingers. Then, I use a wide tooth comb to smooth things out. If I wear a peacock twist or a bun I can manage to get my hair up without bothering to detangle.

Thank you! Your comments were very helpful. The popping noises freak me out and I just wanted to ensure I wasn't going to create rat nests by not detangling every single day. Phew! Problem solved.

If im doing it in a peacock twist I just put it up without really detangling, and the same with my usual bun with a hairband, the band holds down any stray bits :)

How do you do you a bun with a hairband?
I have heard of a scrunchie bun....is it similar??

I wash my hair only once a week if I can get away with it and the only detangling I do is after washing. I might run my fingers through to separate the curls when they get wrapped around each other and then bun.

I'm a slight wavy, and I don't detangle unless it's wet (or right before washing, that might still happen sometimes - esp. when I don't leave it wavy). On 2nd days I mostly do an updo and don't detangle. It works out better for the updo!

I'm not sure what the poster meant, exactly, but sometimes I will wear my hair in a bun, then also wear a headband to control the shorter hairs near my face.

Oh man! I leave the curls exactly the way they are. They look better that way, and it's better for them.
When it's time for me to braid or something like that, I usually drench them in water, and then drench them in condish. that way, the whole detangling thing is much, MUCH easier!
That's just what works for me, you'll find what works for you through trial and error. Hope this helps! ;)
